Q) What made you want to be a part of the series “In Defense Of?”

A) I wanted to be part of Oxygen’s “In Defense Of” because it was a very novel idea, examine what being a defense lawyer does to your life, your heart, you soul and your pocketbook.

Q) How did you become the defense attorney for Ted Bundy?

A) I became Ted Buddy’s attorney because I was asked by two attorneys I respected.

Q) What were your first thoughts when you met him?

A) First thoughts: here is a guy in BIG trouble who seemed normal, but it was an act.

Q) Was there anything you were surprised to learn about Bundy throughout the course of defending him?

A) I was surprised by Ted when he broke down and cried once and was honest. He once said, “I want to be a good person but I’m not.”

Q) I think the common misconception about defense attorneys is that they always believe their client is innocent. Would you agree and why?

A) NO, I DO NOT BELIEVE ALL MY CLIENTS ARE INNOCENT. I DO believe all my clients are a target of a government that has more power than all clients or defense attorneys.

Q) Were there certain parts of the case you deemed off limits to the “In Defense Of” camera?

A) Nothing was “off limits” with show.

Q) It is rumored that after representing Bundy you were convinced that some people were born evil. What changed your mind?

A) Ted was the person that made me change my belief that no person was born evil. He had a hard life as a kid, but not that hard and many people with hard lives do well.

Q) Bundy thought the two of you were alike. What do you think prompted him to think you had things in common?

A) “We are so much alike,” was very disturbing. He basically wanted to be me!!! Which no sane person would want.

Q) Zac Efron is set to play Bundy in an upcoming film. Did you consult on the film at all and what do you think of the casting?

A) I was not consulted but should have been. The movie is based on the superficial book written by Ted’s one-time girlfriend. She knew very little of the “real” Ted. Zac will do a good job on the charming side of Ted, but I look forward to seeing him play the dark side.

Q) What do you hope viewers take away or learn from watching “In Defense Of” when it comes to your defense of former client Ted Bundy?

A) I hope viewers take away the reality of being a shield between the government and the individual and how critical that is for a free society. Thomas Jefferson once said, “When the people are afraid of government you have FEAR. When the government is afraid of people you have freedom.” MAKE THE GOVERNMENT AFRAID!!!
