Q) Talk about the story behind your new single “goodbye & thank u.”

A) On a personal level, it’s an ode to the apartment that watched me grow from a freshly-moved-out-20-year-old to a grown woman with a partner and a life and an adulthood. On a more existential level, I think we all have places that we feel raised us, be them summer camps or dorm rooms or childhood homes, and this song is a thank you to those kinds of places.

Q) What kind of fan response have you gotten to this recent release?

A) It’s been really special watching fans connect emotionally to the song and tie it to important memories and stories in their own lives… I love seeing something I made up as my own tool for catharsis help someone else have a good cry. (I love a good cry)

Q) This song is sort of a goodbye to the old Kira as she grows up and matures. What makes this song so special to you?

A) I think you sort of just said it – I have a lot of baggage around my past, my childhood, the various versions of me that have existed and disappeared… but this song sort of acknowledges those versions and thanks them for bringing me to where I am now.

Q) “Goodbye & thank u” is another wonderful song from your EP. What can you tell us about the overall sound and vibe of something new?

A) The project is soft and gentle in a way that used to really scare me. I built a lot of walls over the years to protect me from the dangers of the public eye, but this project strips back a lot of that pretense. To me, it feels feminine, hopeful, optimistic. I hope allows listeners to get comfortable in their own softness and openness.

Q) What was the process like for you choosing the songs that you’d be featuring on the EP?

A) I made probably thirty to fifty songs in the time between Songbird and Something New… I’d say the latter half of those were all strong contenders for this new EP. My goal was really to just pick the ones that told the story in the way that felt right. I think these five songs do that.

Q) Will you be headed out on a tour to help promote your new music or will you be taking some down time to celebrate your hard work?

A) I’m hitting the road for a mini-tour next month with Stacey Ryan to promote the EP and test out some new material, which I’m really stoked for. I did actually take a release-week (and anniversary) vacation with my partner when Something New dropped, which I know probably doesn’t seem all that radical, but if you know me and how much of a workaholic I’ve been over the last decade it’s pretty wild. It tends to be really hard for me to pause and acknowledge any sort of progress or accomplishment without feeling the pressure of the *next*, but this felt like the right way to celebrate an EP that is, at least to me, about choosing love and life over everything else now and then. If “busy” is about anything… it’s that “wasting time” is really, really worth it, sometimes. I’m trying to take my own advice.

Q) Who would you most love to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Jacob Collier. I’d love to spend hours recording harmony stacks with him. And Maisie Peters; I think she writes some of the cleverest lyrics out there.

Q) We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how much we loved seeing you on our screens. Do you have any upcoming acting projects in the works?

A) Nothing I’m allowed to talk about yet… but thank you!

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the music and on-screen magic that you make?

A) You guys mean the absolute world to me. Be kind to each other, be kind to yourself, stay hydrated, spend time in nature, take breaks from your phone, wear clothes that make you happy, eat foods that make you feel good and never be afraid to look silly.
