Le Couleur – Concorde

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Hardest question you could ask. POP, I guess!

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Very broad!  Too many to name.  Right now, this record sounds more cinematic.  We had more pictures in our heads than sounds and notes.  It’s more about these 70’s erotic-porno movies like Emmanuelle or Bilitis. Architecture and Swiss graphic design define our mindset for this album.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Concorde.”

A) Much like our music, objects, pictures, movies and architecture are big influences. The story behind this magnificent plane was so easy to talk about.  Actually, the object itself as well as the tragedy surrounding it inspired us to talk about more tragic situation: Mental illness, sectarian collective suicide, a friend with drugs issues, etc…It is quite a dark album now that I describe it!  But it’s never heavy and depressing since it’s not a personal situation. These stories aren’t to free ourselves or anything like that.  We thought they were good themes to put sounds and images on.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think it’s because of them we can do what we do.  It’s fantastic!

Q) Ariel Poupart directed the video. How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) Lost and sad people under a sad event.  I guess it was quite easy for him to picture.

Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Always music and melody before lyrics.  Sometimes we know what we want to talk about and it will inspire us to use this sound or this instrument, but never have we had a full page of lyrics and then built a song around it. Music serves lyrics and the other way around.

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) We’re very independent.  We do everything ourselves in terms of music.  We all compose, write, record and produce the songs.  It’s great to have our own studio a few steps away from our house.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Le Couleur performance?

A) Get ready to dance your heart out, otherwise Laurence will catch you and won’t let you go.

Q) What songs off your LP are you looking forward to performing live?

A) All of them!  We’ve done approximately five hundred concerts before this album.  Looking forward to changing the set.

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your new LP as a whole?

A) Like we’ve done with the previous ones: Make your own story, your own fantasy. What we’re telling are very objective and there is not only one way to interpret them. It’s always been important for us in the process: Never tell something too personal and directive.  Maybe that’s why we had a certain international “success” even though the majority of the songs are sung in French.

Q) The LP drops on April 17th. How do you plan to celebrate?

A) Watch our Instagram on the night of the 17th.  You’ll see!

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) The US has been quite generous to us so far.  Probably because we’re French Canadian and it’s kind of exotic.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) As explained above, we’re thinking more about a photograph or a movie producer than a musician.  Sometimes we can be inspired by their design or picture or clothes, etc…Like Anton Corbijn or Andy Warhol for instance.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Right now!  Caribou.  He has a fantastic career.  Jacco Gardner – Somnium and Hypnophobia.  Nice sounds, nice touch.  Bold artist. But we are still listening to our old record collection every day.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Sometimes it’s hard to keep connecting and sharing relevant stuff – Since we’re a bit older than the generation who was born with social media.  But it’s part of the game.  Everybody wants to know everything right now!

They are fantastic platforms though.  Really!  Music and fans have never been as easy to reach as right now.  We’re using a lot of them to discover new artists and bands.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Hope you all had sex – at least once – on our music.  That would be a good way for you guys to support us.  Try it out!
