The episode opens with a memory montage of Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Landon’s (Aria Shahghasemi) greatest hits. But sappy music aside, Landon is feeling pretty conflicted.

And he’s not the only one. Memories in tact now, Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) meet up with Hope who tells the twins she is heading back to New Orleans. Lizzie says she and Josie are evolved enough to be cool with each other despite their mutual interest in Landon because #girlpower. Also, she’s still mad at Sebastian (Thomas Doherty) and MG (Quincy Fouse) for keeping secrets. Josie thinks MG is not the only friend who has been keeping secrets. The awkwardness that follows gets interrupted by a Sphinx (Babak Tafti).

A sphinx is a cat-like creature who deals in riddles. He asks the girls a riddle about night and day. They answer and, to avoid unwanted attention, they then cast an invisibility spell and venture back to school.

Hope informs Alaric (Matt Davis) about this week’s monster and he tells her she should stay. But Hope thinks she’s not wanted at The Salvatore School. Ric says everyone just needs time.

Josie is talking to Landon, sort of. She’s using the prism to project a version of Landon from her subconscious. She really wants to know who he is going to choose.

Landon and Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) are in the library desperately seeking a Malivore solution.  Rafael has decided he’s Landon’s bodyguard. Landon tells Rafael it’s not his job to protect him and he’d rather he just be his brother. Raf says he’s whatever Landon needs him to be. Enter Josie. She tells Landon she’s got a crazy idea, but they’re gonna need help.

The help she’s got in mind is Vardemus (Alexis Denisof). Of course, the sketchy headmaster gives the green light. He warns them they’ll have to use black magic and hands over a trident. They’ll also need Hope.

Hope is about to hop the next bus to New Orleans only to be stopped by a very emotional Landon. He says he loves her and doesn’t want her to go. He declares his undying love for Hope and she says she loves him back. There’s just one problem. That’s not entirely Landon. The declarations are interrupted by Landon and Josie.

Here is the tale of two Landons. Josie used the prism and trident to project Landon’s subconscious out into the real world. The plan is to fill him with Hope’s blood and toss him into the pit.

Simulandon (Tommy Cooley) is pretty adamant about being in love with Hope. Lizzie is worried about Josie’s black magic use. Landon is just uncomfortable about how vocal Simulandon is about his feelings for Hope. Also, he’ll disintegrate at the end of day.

Rafael is being annoyed by the Sphinx. He answers a riddle and gets a fun fact about the Sphinx – he doesn’t just guard the oracle; he is an oracle. Raf just earned an answer to any question. He wants to know how to keep Landon safe. The Sphinx replies it’s not possible as long as he’s at the school.

Real Landon is being kind of cold to Hope while she’s transfusing her blood into Simulation Landon.

Ric has gone to The Salvatore School to give Vardemus a piece of his mind, but he gets cut off by Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) who says they’ve got problems. Dorian ran Vardemus’ DNA and it’s bizarre. It also matches the unknown person’s DNA that Alaric was looking for at the pit. They realize Vardemus is an impostor.

Speaking of that, he’s with Josie and playing on her worst insecurity. He points out the ways everyone else has let her down and convinces her to do a spell that he says will help her. She performs the spell on the trident, her eyes go black and she passes out. Once she’s out Clarke (Nick Fink) takes off the glamour revealing his true form.

Hope and Simulandon talk. They discuss why she’s planning to leave. She says she’s not welcome, but Landon states that she belongs there and that Simulation Landon was created because they don’t want her to have to go into the pit.

Elsewhere, actual Landon is planning on drowning himself before Rafael interrupts. He says him being a phoenix doesn’t make repeated suicide okay. He also rants about how crazy things have gotten. Raf says they came here in the first place because there were no other safe places in the world, but now The Salvatore School feels unsafe.

Lizzie offers Simulandon to the Sphinx, but the Sphinx isn’t interested. He says he has no need for Landon. Lizzie wants to know what he wants if he doesn’t want Landon. He’ll only tell her if she can figure out an extra complicated riddle.

Ric checks on Hope who is pretty drained after giving the blood. He tells her Vardemus is Clarke and he also apparently tricked Josie into creating a dark object. He tells Hope to rest and then leaves. The one problem? Clarke is in the room. He’s still got the illusion casting ring, so he slaps magic canceling shackles on Hope.

Clarke tells him his father screwed him over. He has to eat people and monsters in order to keep his form. Now, his plan is to take over Hope’s body. Hope is not sold on the idea and makes a run for it. Or does she?

She stole the ring and cast an illusion of herself. Clarke figures this out and runs back to the room. Feeling desperate, Hope jumps off the balcony. Werewolves can heal, but between the blood loss and the shackles Hope is not as up to a fight with Clarke as she normally would be. Luckily, Landon intervenes. He fights Clarke and gets him to put his consciousness into him. There’s just one catch. That was Simulation!Landon. As the moon rises, he turns into dust.

Josie recovers from the dark magic with Lizzie’s help and Hope swings by. Hope apologizes to Josie and Josie apologizes to Hope. Hope asks if it’s okay with her to come back to school. She misses it there.

They magically get a letter from Landon, who informs them he’s leaving so that he can take the monsters and chaos with him. We seem him on a bus with Rafael. Landon asks Rafael if he’s sure about this, but where Landon goes we know that Rafael goes.

Josie says Landon made his choice, so they should make theirs and tells Hope to stay. She, Lizzie and Hope end the night with ice cream.

The Salvatore School is headmasterless for the moment, but Ric and Dorian still have much to discuss. Dorian works it out and they go to the Sphinx. They figure out the Sphinx doesn’t serve Malivore. He admits that Malivore is horrible, but what’s coming is worse. He says there are two prisoners and that sins of the father will be visited upon daughters and love will destroy. The Sphinx says it’ll be clear soon enough. Using one of his claws, he slits his own throat and turns to dust.

The last scene of the episode shows Clarke’s body being dragged to the figure in the red cloak. If it’s not Clarke, who is it?
