The episode opens with another assembly at the Salvatore school. Alaric (Matthew Davis) says he’s realized it’s unfair to require the students to follow rules without giving them a voice in making them. In that vein, there’s going to be an honor council composed of one vampire, one witch and one wolf with the guidance counselor Emma (Karen David) acting as a representative for the primary school kids. An election will be held but, in the meantime, Ric is heading off to meet with Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) since he’s captured a magical creature.

Leaving is easier said than done. First Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) corners him as he wants to know if Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) can stay and angles to get the honor council to vote on it. Alaric says if Landon’s supernatural tests come back inconclusive, they can decide. M.G. (Quincy Fouse) wants to talk about Kaleb (Chris Lee) who’s been on lockdown since the school found out about him munching on humans. M.G. wonders if Kaleb can get a lighter sentence mostly because the other vampires a mad at him, but Ric maintains the punishment fits the crime. When baby vampires feed on humans they get dangerous, but maybe the honor council can vote on Kaleb’s fate. Next up to bat is Hope (Danielle Rose Russell). She’s been assigned to run magical tests on Landon. Things are still tense between the two and she thinks heading off to interrogate what Ric’s calling a “Dryad” (Andreas Damm) would be more interesting. Ric doesn’t budge as Emma’s acting as headmaster while he’s away so Hope’s running the tests.

Back in the dorms Lizzie is (Jenny Boyd) convinced she’ll win the witches vote and is trying to figure out what to wear to the inevitable victory party. Josie (Kaylee Bryant), who’s doing most of campaign work, tries to get her sister to take the job and the election seriously reminding Lizzie it’s a big responsibility. No such luck since Lizzie just says she’s perfect for the job because she’s great at getting people to realize what they want.

In the headmaster’s office we see Hope resigned to running the tests and greeted a by a shocked Landon who isn’t happy about the prospect of his future being in her hands. After their recent confrontations he believes she’s biased. Hope says she’s not happy about it either, but they’re both stuck. It’s the only way for them to get answers.

Elsewhere, Josie sees Penelope Park’s (Lulu Antariska) doing some serious campaigning. Penelope says that Lizzie only cares about herself and the witches deserve a better candidate. They argue and Josie calls Penelope immoral and spiteful. Penelope ignores the slights and tells Josie her sister’s unfit for office and walks off.

Ric arrives to the cabin meets the Dryad, an earthy spirit of a tree who were known to be pacifists. She calls them evil and doesn’t trust them. Ric wants her to tell them about the knife, but she won’t unless they tracks down a man she loved named Oliver. Dorian doesn’t want to negotiate with her, but Ric relents seeing it as their only chance.

While Dorian searches and Alaric and the Dryad have a one-on-one, she tells Ric he needn’t be afraid of her: humans are the dangerous ones. Ric’s not letting his guard down though but decides to ask her about Oliver. The Dryad says Oliver never lied and was different from other men she knew. He became a vampire so that they could be together forever, and they planned to run away. She can sense Ric’s pain and loss and he tells her about Jo, the twins’ biological mother, and they share a moment. Which is interrupted by Dorian when he comes bearing an astral projection version of Oliver. The Dryad’s thrilled to see him but, unfortunately, Oliver has no idea who she is.

She’s not the only one having a rough day. Back at the Salvatore school Landon’s trying and failing to show any sign of supernatural ability in his tests. When talking with Emma, Hope says his blood analysis showed zero sign of magic. Emma tells her that’s unusual, all humans have a least one magical distant relative. They need to know more about Landon’s past. This leads to an interview between him and Hope with a magical lie detector. We learn Landon’s mom gave him up, he never knew fathe, and honestly doesn’t know why he took the knife.

Inside the school the election rages on. Josie continues to campaign for Lizzie, who still isn’t taking her challenger seriously. Rafael shows up and ask Lizzie to vote to keep Landon around. She agrees, but only if Raf agrees to be her date to her sweet sixteen. He says fine.

MG goes down to the dungeons to see Kaleb. He tries to apologize to a still angry Kaleb and promises to get him sprung if he helps rally the vamps to MG’s side. Kaleb agrees and tells MG to send them his way.

Rafael’s doing some campaigning of his own with his alpha Jed (Ben Levin). He begs Jed to vote to keep Landon, but he’s bent on sending him away. But Raf’s got a backup plan, he’s been reading about werewolf law and wants to challenge Jed for the alpha role. They have a trial by combat and Rafael wins while Josie and MG continue to campaign. Later on, it’s time to vote. Rafael’s elected the werewolf representative, MG loses to Kaleb and the witch rep is Josie.

The Dryad’s disappointed when she brings up memories with Oliver and the clearing they used to go to. Not only does he not remember he’s married now. This devastates her and she says she mistaken him for someone else, but this doesn’t seem true.

Away from election drama Landon’s not happy with Hope. He apologized, repeatedly, so why’s Hope still so hostile? Hope tries to pretend not to care, but the lie detecting orb blows her cover. She admits it’s easier to be mad than get disappointed by Landon. Landon tells her he’s had his own disappointments. He apologizes again, and this time Hope accepts it.

Unfortunately, after leaving Hope, he runs into Jed who’s not taking losing to Rafael well. He says everything was fine before Raf and Landon’s arrival and attacks Landon leaving him bruised and bloody. Landon can be next seen in the infirmary with Rafael and Hope. Raf wants to tear Jed apart, but Hope distracts him by sending him to search for an herb that doesn’t exist. She apologizes to Landon for what happened to him. She admits that even though some of the Salvatore students are nicer than others, they’re all capable of hurting people the way Jed hurt Landon.  She asks him if he feels safe at the school and he answers yes. Hope tells him to get some rest and leaves.

In the twins room Lizzie’s trying to stay calm. Josie apologizes and offers to refuse the job, so Lizzie can have it. The problem is that Lizzie wasn’t the runner-up. Lizzie’s clearly upset by this but says what’s done is done. Lizzie’s not the only one feeling bruised about losing. MG heads down to the dungeon to retrieve Kaleb and says Kaleb stabbed him in the back. Kaleb’s unapologetic and says now they’re even.

Hope’s calls Ric who says the Dryad’s clammed up, but it seems that any and all memory of the magical creatures they’ve been encountering has been erased. Hope’s not as enthused as Alaric and says she wants a seat on the council. As the only one of her kind she says she’s the only one who can represent her own interests fully. Alaric agrees and says he’s trusting her to do the right thing.

Speaking of the Dryad, it seems Alaric and Dorian still aren’t making progress. Alaric does what the Dryad asked for at the beginning of the episode and opens the window. He tells her he’s sorry about Oliver and she decides to answer whatever questions he has.

At the school it’s honor council meeting time. Hope walks in and Kaleb’s confused about her position. She says she ran unopposed because of the tri-brid. The vote begins and Emma votes to let Landon stay because the school exists to help kids like him. Hope and then tells the group Landon’s got go because she thinks he’s unsafe there. Rafael says he can protect Landon, but Hope says realistically none of them can be with him all the time. Plus, Landon doesn’t really feel safe there either. Kaleb wants Landon to leave because he’s human and the Salvatore school belongs to supernaturals with two in favor of keeping Landon and two opposed Josie’s the deciding vote.

We cut to the Dryad. She’s telling Dorian and Alaric the night she and Oliver were to run away together they were attacked, but by what she’s not sure. Then, she was trapped and in what felt like an instant for her then she was near the cabin with an urge to possess the knife. She doesn’t know why or what it does though. A voice inside her mind is telling her to take it to a dark pit under the earth. She can’t fight the voice anymore and attacks wrapping her vines around them. Dorian shoots her with a crossbow and as she’s bleeding out she pleads with them to take her to the daffodils.

In the vote Josie, despite Rafael’s pleas, decides Landon should leave. She says since Landon appeared that she, her sister and father have almost died. Since they don’t what he is she says it might not be safe to have him around. Raf storms out and tells Hope and Josie he’s done with them.

As the Dryad lays dying outside, she apologizes to Dorian saying she was wrong about him. Dorian does the same and tells her he’s sorry for what’s happened to her. But wait, she remembers something. The pit beneath the earth is called Malivore. She takes her last breath and becomes a tree.

In the gym Lizzie’s going to town on a punching bag only to be interrupted by Penelope. She asks why she hates her so much. Penelope says none of this was about her, but about how Lizzie treats Josie. Lizzie insists she loves her sister, but Penelope points out Lizzie never considering that Josie might want to be the witches’ representative. Penelope calls Lizzie a black hole of Josie’s love and energy and doesn’t give Josie any room for herself. We’re given the impression that whatever went wrong between Josie and Penelope was Lizzie related. She ends the dressing down by saying Josie will never burn down Lizzie’s world, so she’ll do it for her.

Hope walks Landon to the bus stop, he wanted to leave before Raf could try to follow him. She tries to reassure him that the vote was close, but admits she voted against him. She explains that she just wanted to do what was best for him. Then, she gives him a ticket to New Orleans and informs him he’ll be staying with a friend of hers who will help him find answers. She also gives him his test results, some cash, and a bracelet that will bring her to him if he ever needs her. He’s touched and thanks her. She tries to leave and then Landon gets the bracelet to bring her back and they share a goodbye kiss.

An angry Rafael storms into the gym and finds Lizzie in tears. She apologizes about the vote and tells him she doesn’t have to be his date. He says he’ll keep his word because she’s not the one who broke their deal. Lizzie kisses him and they start making out.

Landon’s on the bus and pulls out the picture of him (as a baby) and his mother. She’s wearing the necklace with the symbol the dryad drew while talking about the black pit.
