We open with Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) in a counseling session, but not with Emma. She is with Dr. Goodfellow (TJ Ramini). He walks us through what happened via flashbacks. This morning in PE with way too much super strength upon seeing Landon (Aria Shahghasemi), Hope nearly breaks Jed’s (Ben Levin) ribs during a game of dodgeball. It was an accident she insists. However, that wasn’t an isolated incident.  Hope was in the library yesterday and some students were talking about her father’s checkered history. It upsets her and she makes several lights implode and books fly off the shelf. She says she had a headache, but that wasn’t the end of it. Enter Landon who Dr. Goodfellow guesses is at the root of some of Hope’s anger. But Hope says they can’t really have a couple’s session if they’re not a couple. Landon and Hope bicker a little about their relationship status until she remembers she came into the office to track a monster. She thinks it’s Dr. Goodfellow. Dr. Goodfellow puts on his best mind-control voice and tells Hope she’s being silly. Dr. Goodfellow has always been at the school and he’s known her for her whole life. Hope is successfully whammied and leaves. Before Landon can follow he’s asked by the not-guidance counselor to stay. They need to talk about Landon’s future.

Alaric (Matt Davis) walks through the hallway and listens to a message from Sheriff Mac (Bianca Kajlich). She wants Ric to call and he is considering it. But just before he can decide Dr. Goodfellow interrupts. He tells Ric not to call her because he’s not ready. Alaric doesn’t have a clue who this is at first, but then the guidance counselor works his magic and Ric believes they’re besties. As a life-long friend Dr. Goodfellow reminds him of all his dead exes and tells him he needs to think about what risks he’s willing to take. He convinces Ric to take some time off while he runs the school for a few days. Plus, he thought of a way to satisfy their arts requirement.

The plan is Landon. Dr. Goodfellow wants him to write a musical about the Salvatore school’s founding. The school could use a morale boost and now that Landon is human he needs to start planning for a future. He tells Hope about Salvatore: The Musical and she’s less than thrilled. She doesn’t sing in public and she doesn’t like the idea that her family will be included. Her family is really hard to exclude because of the history, Landon insists, but Hope says she wants them left out of it.

Kaleb (Chris Lee) and MG (Quincy Fouse) talk about the auditions. Well, mostly Kaleb who is very excited talks about getting the perfect audition slot. MG is distracted because he has Alyssa on the brain. He wants to look for Alyssa (Olivia Liang), but Kaleb points out she left of her own free will. Once Kaleb leaves Alyssa astral projects into the room. She warns MG that a monster has been sent into the school to distract them, but they’ll never see it coming and, on the off chance MG can find the monster, no one will believe him.

There’s a casting call. Everyone from Kaleb to Wade (Elijah B. Moore) wants to play Damon. Like everyone. That is until Jed comes along. He really connects with Stefan and feels like he’s a real grounding force in the story. This makes Landon happy because he thinks so too and no one else wanted to play Stefan. Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) walks in and demands to play Caroline and thinks Josie (Kaylee Bryant) should be Elena. It takes some convincing, but Lizzie thinks this’ll be a good opportunity to start participating in the community again.

MG goes to Dr. Goodfellow to share some monster theories. Dr. Goodfellow finally tells him he’s the monster. At first MG laughs because that’s absurd. He’s known Dr. Goodfellow his whole life. But wait! MG only transferred to the Salvatore School two years ago. So, it’s impossible and Dr. Goodfellow is an imposter. Specifically he’s a sprite named Puck (Shakespeare reference). He does two things: one is breaking people apart. He doesn’t want to share the second thing yet.

Poor MG endures a Groundhog’s Day type afternoon. Every time he leaves the office to try and tell people Dr. Goodfellow is the monster he forgets. He runs back to tell Dr. Goodfellow, Dr. Goodfellow tells him he’s the monster and he runs to warn the student body only to forget all over again. He tries writing down that Dr. Goodfellow is the monster so he can read it after his memory is erased, but magic won’t allow it. This goes on for a few hours.

The cast for the play is rehearsing, but Landon is still writing. Josie tells Landon she doesn’t get Elena. She’s indecisive and kind of selfish. And the ending song is about undying love, but Elena has endured so much loss. Many other people have notes as well. Lizzie runs off after freezing up before a big solo from Carolie’s point of view. She doesn’t feel like she can live up to someone as perfect as Caroline. She feels like no matter how much progress she makes her mind is always plotting against her.

Landon is finding it difficult to condense all the history into one two-hour play. There are miracle babies, vampire hunters, inappropriate student/teacher relationships and Bonnie is always leaving. Dr. Goodfellow says he just needs to focus on what he wants this play to say.

An inspired Landon goes running to Hope. He apologizes and wants to make up with her. He tells her he now knows the show is about love and her father inspired the final song. But, he used the lyrics from a letter Klaus wrote her. This upsets Hope, but Landon insists he did it with her in mind. Plus, there was no way to exclude the original vampires from the play. Hope rips up the lyrics and storms off.

It’s showtime. For context, a high school musical can take months to put on, but they’ve thrown this together in one day. Anyway, there are problems. Some people don’t like their lines and are refusing to say them. Hope is boycotting the play. Dr. Goodfellow tells Landon the actor they cast to play Klaus is sick. Luckily, he volunteers to step in. How convenient. There are songs about the strange happenings in Mystic Falls, death and we see Kaleb and Jed sing a song about the Salvatore Brothers complicated relationship. As Caroline, Lizzie performs a song about always feeling second to Elena. As Elena, Josie thinks about feeling conflicted about her feelings for Damon and Stefan.

Josie goes running to Dr. Goodfellow. She is really happy because she understands Elena now. At first she felt Elena was being selfish, but the truth was Elena just changed. Josie realizes she’s changed, too. Dr. Goodfellow is glad she made a breakthrough and sorry about what comes next. What comes next is that he breaks Josie’s arm. Jade (Giorgia Whigham) comes backstage and offers to help Josie since everyone is busy.

Since Josie is out of commission, Landon decides they have to put her character in a coma early. The show must go on and he tells the cast to quit bugging him about the lines. A note zooms through the air and into Hope’s hands, but it’s addressed to Lizzie. We move on to a scene between Klaus and Hope where Dr. Goodfellow as Klaus is telling a young Hope how much he loves her and the audience learns that he gave the money to fund the school. From the sidelines the real Hope sees and is pleased.  Lizzie notices Hope and Hope gives her the letter.

Hope has some one on one time with Dr. Goodfellow. She observes that Dr. Goodfellow said those things about how special and loved Hope is, exactly the way her father would have. Dr. Goodfellow says he met Klaus once before. He was entertaining, but a terrible painter. Hope wants Dr. Goodfellow to answer a question like Klaus would. Dr. Goodfellow tells Hope she’s too hard on herself. He explains that feeling pain isn’t a weakness, it means she’s opened her heart despite knowing all the risks. Now, he says she’s ready.

In the play Jed!Stefan and Kaleb!Damon share a goodbye. Lizzie!Caroline sings a song promising that she’ll be okay even though Stefan is dying. Then, Hope talks over the role of Elena. We cut away to MG confronting Dr. Goodfellow about being the monster again. But MG has figured out that he only forgets when he walks away. So, he handcuffs himself to Dr. Goodfellow. However, Dr. Goodfellow magically handcuffs MG to a staircase.

Hope sings the goodbye song referencing always and forever. Dr. Goodfellow watches and reminds MG that he does break people apart, but he always helps them get back together. The gist of Hope’s song is that it’s better to have love and lost than to have never taken a risk and loved in the first place. She gets a standing ovation.

Jade sets Josie’s arm and explains that she’s leaving. There are too many bad memories at the school. She also encourages Josie to explore new options. Before Jade leaves she says she and Josie shouldn’t date. Jade used to babysit Josie so it’s weird. Although, they still share a goodbye kiss.

Ric goes to Sheriff Mac. She’s worried he’s drunk at first, but he’s sober and tells Mac that he’s always told himself he isn’t the kind of person who gets a happily ever after. And he’s honestly afraid to risk it (backstory, three of Ric’s girlfriends and wives have died). He wants to take the risk and be with Mac. She invites him inside.

Lizzie reads a letter from Caroline (we get a voice over from Candice King). She tells Lizzie that when she was younger she was a mess. Caroline explains that she always felt like she was waiting for her life to start, but she wants Lizzie to remember that her life is already happening. Caroline says that Lizzie’s brain-chemistry gives her unique challenges, but she isn’t broken.

Landon and Hope reconcile at the docks. Hope thanks Landon for getting everyone to see the side of Klaus she knew. Landon admits he got so obsessed with the musical because he just didn’t want to face missing Rafael. They agree not to give up on being together.

Dr. Goodfellow and MG talk. MG decides that Puck/Dr. Goodfellow isn’t that monstrous. The Necromancer wanted him to distract them all, but he couldn’t resist helping everyone out. Before he takes his leave he reminds MG that the point of the play is that even monsters can be redeemed, even ones people have given up on.

Speaking of that, we zoom in on the Necromancer (Ben Geurens) killing someone. For every life they take they can summon a monster. Alyssa looks a little queasy about the dead body. The Necromancer asks if she’s secured a vampire. At that moment MG speeds in to rescue her, but she doesn’t take his hand. Instead, taking advantage of MG’s confusion, the Necromancer drives a dagger into MG’s stomach and he falls to the ground.
