Legacies – Since When Do You Speak Japanese?

The year is 1300 and there is a samurai speaking Japanese and having a heated discussion with himself. This is ultimately interrupted by Malivore in monster form. Surprising no one, Malivore (Douglas Tait) comes out on top.

Present day we see the samurai, whose name is Kurutta (Soji Arai), is thrown from Malivore into Mystic Falls. He wakes up frantic and demands to know, in Japanese, who touched him. The onlookers are confused between the language barrier and the samurai armor. But wait, the good Samaritan who woke him up walks away with slightly glowing eyes.

At Mystic Falls High School we see Alaric (Matt Davis) calls Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) to his office to discuss some supernatural business. He thinks for her sake and Landon’s (Aria Shahghasemi) that she needs to transfer back to The Salvatore School. But Hope thinks they’re all better off without her and also she tells Ric that she and Landon were in love. She doesn’t want to hurt him, Josie or herself anymore. They’re interrupted by Sheriff Mac (Bianca Kajlich).

Hope goes to class and Ric gets served. Professor Rupert Vardemus (Alexis Denisof) has invoked a restraining order against him. He’s not allowed anywhere near the school from now on. Bummer.

Speaking of which, at the school Josie (Kaylee Bryant) has a killer rash. It turns out using dark magic has some intense consequences. Vardemus comes by and is in manipulation mode. Josie is upset and says she’s never using dark magic again. Vardemus notes there’s a place for the dark arts in witchcraft. If Ric advised against it, it was only to stifle his students.

Lizzie’s (Jenny Boyd) convening a court to help her find an outfit for her date with Sebastian (Thomas Doherty) and MG (Quicy Fouse) is tiptoeing around her. He doesn’t want to upset her by saying that Sebastian isn’t real, so tells her she might be moving too fast. Lizzie brushes it off and asks him to just be happy for her.

Landon and Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) are venturing to Mystic Falls High to see Ric. Landon is worried the monsters are all after him and Rafael…Well, he hasn’t been all there since transforming. But he’s curious about Hope.

Remember Kuratta from earlier? Wielding a glowing sword he makes his way to The Salvotore School startling Dorian, who doesn’t speak Japanese. Luckily for him Josie does. Making a long story short there was a demon inside Kuratta. It possessed many people and made them do terrible things, but Kuratta could fight it because he was dropped on his head as a baby. People with “broken” minds can handle this demon. Also, the sword senses the supernatural, which is how he found the school. He now needs to find the Oni demon. Speaking of that, it’s inside Raf and makes him attack Landon. Thankfully, Hope saves him.

Josie takes Kuratta into the school and tries to recruit Lizzie for help, but she’s a little miffed. Thanks to twin-telepathy due to Josie’s dark magic misadventures, she’s got a wicked rash of her own. At first, she agrees to help, but when she learns the demon creates insanity, she decides she doesn’t want to risk her hard fought for mental health and declines.

Hope uses a sleeping spell on Rafael and Landon. She and Ric discuss the demon only to be interrupted by Josie and Kuratta. Josie translates the story of Kuratta and the demon to the gang. Hope tries to inquire about the portal Kuratta mentions, but Josie gets snippy with her and tells her father she believes Hope to be untrustworthy. Also, the demon really wants to take Landon back to Malivore.

Okay, so good news the demon is out of Rafael. The bad news is they’ve gotta find the demon.

Josie and Landon talk. Josie’s putting up a barrier spell and is jealous of Hope. Landon is thinking of sacrificing himself by letting the demon possess him and then the gang stabbing him with the sword. Josie is not okay with this plan, but Landon says it’s wrong to keep putting people in danger to protect him. Josie also realizes the sword is spelled with a ton of black magic and leaves him alone with Kurratta.

Josie goes to Hope and Landon. She tells Ric that Landon wants to sacrifice himself for everyone and pointedly stakes her claim on Landon with Hope. Hope says she’ll go try and talk to him. They’re left alone and she tells him that the sword might end up being phoenix kryptonite. Also, she knows from personal experience that not all sacrifices are worth it. Landon wants to know why Hope cares so much. She explains about Malivore and says they were friends, actually more than friends once. They were in love.

By the lake Lizzie and Sebastian are having a picnic. Or are they? MG’s lurking behind the bushes and snaps a picture, which enrages Lizzie. He tries to explain and shows her a picture of her alone. He says Sebastian isn’t real, which devastates Lizzie who runs off.

This declaration of love would be sweet except that Landon’s eyes glow red and he knocks out Hope. He’s possessed and Kurratta is dead. Hope comes to and Josie blames her for Landon escaping. Hope explains and they decide to do a locator spell while Ric stumbles onto something else.

It seems that Sheriff Mac had an entire file on Ric and his girls. He’s pissed and tells her to come to him if she has a problem with his family. After he’s done going off on her she apologizes and explains she wanted to ask him out and wanted to know if he’s a good guy. Ric dials back the rage and apologizes by explaining that he’s had some bad experiences. Sherriff Mac says she’s had bad experiences too, which is why she looked into him. They agree to out.

Lizzie is in the town square eating ice cream and crying. She’s worried that all the work she did over the summer was for nothing and she never really got better. She says aloud that maybe she was too broken for any boy to love when she sees Landon walk by with the sword. She wants to know what he’s doing so she follows him and realizes he’s possessed. She acts quickly and stabs him, but in the process, she finds herself possessed. Uh-oh.

So, the locator spell that the girls did leads them to Lizzie who has chained herself to a tree and a dead (at the moment) Landon. Lizzie explains what happened, which is important because usually the demon takes over completely. Josie says people with “broken” minds can resist. Remember that Lizzie lives with bipolar disorder and broken is an insensitive way to describe that! Anyway, Lizzie is struggling and tells Josie to kill her.

Lizzie says Sebastian was a delusion and she’s too broken to ever be repaired. Josie explains that Lizzie is not crazy and they’ll fix whatever is wrong. Instead of stabbing Lizzie, she siphons the dark magic from the sword and kills the demon without killing Lizzie.

After the dust has settled Hope and Ric talk. He stood up Mac and feels guilty for not being there when the girls needed him, but Hope says the twins are super capable and is still set on not going back to The Salvatore school.

There is a plot twist back at school! It seems that Sebastian is real as MG sees him. But only MG can see him. He says Lizzie can’t see him anymore and needs MG’s help.

Josie talks with Vardemus and is starting to think that dark magic isn’t so bad explaining the earlier situation with Lizzie. Vardemus gives her a device that he explains can prevent the consequences of dark magic forever. This screams too good to be true. Later she tells Landon and then they almost sleep together after a heart to heart.

There are some foreboding cloaked figures wandering around town and the episode ends with Lizzie. While asleep, all of her memories of Hope come back. Lizzie Saltzman remembers Hope!
