Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I have been trained in musical theatre since I was young. I performed in several musicals and also sang a lot of Disney songs when I was younger. Pop music came much later. I was always able to hit high notes and belt. Over the last years I have developed a mix of chest and head voice. I would describe my voice as bright and my diction as very clear. I sing with a vibrato – my voice is powerful and engaging.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) There are many. One of my favorite artists, who has also influenced me a lot, is Taylor Swift. I love all of her songs – the melody and the lyrics are very engaging. She is so powerful and is such a nice person, too. She started singing at a young age and worked so hard all her life. That inspires me a lot as I can really relate to that. She also influenced me to write my own music and be able to express myself through it.

Q) Your debut EP Introducing Lilo is out now. How did you celebrate the release?

A) I had a huge EP release party which was so much fun. It was at the historic Globe Theatre in Downtown LA. There were photographers and we had a Life 360 camera which I loved! The DJ was amazing, and we were dancing for hours. Lots of food and drinks and, best of all, I was able to perform all of my songs live in front of a large audience! The venue with all the special effects was stunning. It was a dream come true. It was such a blast hanging out with all my friends and celebrating my release!

Q) How did you decide on the five tracks for the EP?

A) I find inspiration in my everyday life – events that happen and lessons that I learn along the way. These five tracks describe my journey from Singapore to LA and how it was to set foot in a new country and environment with friends, family and my career.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) have a journal where I write all my ideas down for potential songs, and topics I want to work on in the future. I usually start with these big ideas and then listen to the music to get a specific vibe from it. I then come up with specific lyrics. It’s a very creative journey with lots of iterations.

Q) Jaylien lent a hand with the production of the EP, but how much say do you have in the production of your music?

A) It’s a real team effort. Working with Jaylien was an amazing experience. When we first started working together, we went over topics for songs and just talked about things that matter in my life like moving to a new country, my friends and family and more. Then we started to put all these experiences into songs. We recorded all the songs in his studio, and it was a blast. Jaylien is so talented and so encouraging.

Q) What song on the EP holds a special place in your heart and why?

A) The song “Better in Time” holds a special place in my heart. It is a beautiful emotional ballad. It’s about how there may be bumps in the road, but by believing in yourself and never giving up, things will get better in time. This is a lesson that has inspired me to follow my dreams the past few years and I wanted to share this message with the world.

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to Introducing Lilo as a whole?

A) I hope they take away that I’m a fun girl but that I also reflect on my experiences. I’m very open and transparent and want to share that with my audience. For example, my song “When You Believe.” It’s a slow ballad that talks about believing in yourself and the people around you. I want people listening to my music to know that they should follow their passions and dreams and never give up. I want to inspire listeners to do what they love no matter what the obstacles are. In my song “Celebrate” I’m singing about having fun and not taking everything too seriously.

Q) We loved you on “The Voice Kids.” What advice were you given while on the show that you took to heart and who gave it to you?

A) Being on “The Voice Kids” was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned so much from my coach and judges. My coach, Lena, gave me such great advice on singing as well as what happens behind the stage. She gave me some specific exercises to do before my performance, to get me in the zone and to be able to be my best self. For example, we would jump around and make siren noises. As funny as that sounds, it was really fun and extremely helpful to relax.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I would love to do a collaboration with Justin Bieber. He is so cool and talented. I love all of his songs. They are so catchy. He also started when he was young and worked so hard, it is inspiring. I would love to work with him one day.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) I am not currently listening to a specific album, but I always listen to songs of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Kid Laroi, Shawn Mendes and recently I have been obsessed with 2016 top hits playlists. I love the songs from that year. They have all the popular songs I know by heart, and I love jamming to it with the car Windows down!

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) I like to connect with my fans through my stories and posts and then interact when they comment. My favorite thing to do is post question stickers on my Instagram story and then getting a reply or question back from my fans that I can answer. Social media allows me to connect with fans all around the world.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Thank you so much for all your support. It means the world to me. It has helped me become who I am, and I wouldn’t have been able to follow my dreams without all of you. I’m looking forward to sharing my journey ahead with all of you!
