Maisy Kay – Death of the Party

By: Karen Steinberg

Q) Please tell us about the idea behind your new single “Death of the Party.”

A) I actually wrote “Death of The Party” back in 2020. It was one of the rare times where the title came first. I wanted to write about being the opposite of the life of the party, of always having this feeling that you aren’t really wanted or don’t necessarily fit in at the social gathering. It’s something I’ve felt ever since I was a teenager and I really wanted a sort of tongue in cheek moment of owning and embracing my own obscurity.

Q) It’s a great follow up to your track “Somebody You Never Touched.” What kind of fan response have you been receiving to the single?

A) Thank you! It’s been a fun response. I think this song pulls out some darker elements of production from my older music, which I think long term fans really have appreciated.

Q) “Death of the Party” has a visualizer out now. Will a full video be out soon and, if so, what can you tease about crafting it?

A ) I’ve definitely always had ideas for a music video! I see it as very “Euphoria”-esque, I’ve also always had an idea to do something similar to La La Land in the party scene, where everything around Mia (Emma Stone) slows as she is the only thing moving normal speed.

Q) With “Death of the Party” out now is this a prelude to a full album or EP?

A) It’s definitely a hint at what’s to come. I think specifically the concept of death will be something that comes up again. In the journey of the butterfly, we’ve seen Metamorphosis, we’ve seen the Wonderlust of being set free to the skies and now we will see the inevitable death, which is an end of that cycle of life.

Q) Along those lines, you creatively design all of your EP covers. Why is that so important for you?

A) I really love being as creatively involved as possible and I’ve always thought visuals play such a huge part of storytelling and world building. I have a say in every artwork, visual, tour costume, you name it!

Q) We love a Maisy Kay live performance and you’re touring with Lauren Spencer Smith. Any chance you’ll be teaming up to share the stage during your time on the road together?

A) I would certainly love that! It would be up to Lauren, but I’d definitely be down.

Q) The last time we chatted back in 2023, you were hoping to collaborate with Lewis Capaldi and Charlie Puth. What artists these days would you love to team up with for a duet/feature?

A) I’d still love to work with Lewis Capaldi; his new song “Survive” has my heart. I also do love everything Chappell Roan is doing – maybe two redheads could team up together!

Q) I remember you being a fan of Wicked and I’ve got to ask, have you seen both of the movies and what did you think of them?

A) I have seen them! I really enjoyed them. I thought part one was the best, but the vocals displayed by Cynthia [Erivo] and Ariana [Grande] are nothing short of magical! It’s so cool to see such an iconic franchise gain new fans, and I hope it inspires people to go see the musical on stage!

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and your music?

A) Just a huge thank you for the continued support. It hasn’t been an easy journey for me and the thing that motivates me and keeps me going is getting to connect with my listeners and sharing those special moments together. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!
