Q) “Deep” was a song they clicked with instantly when you were provided some demos. How has this song evolved from where it started to what it is cut to be now?

A) I feel like when you listen to a demo, it’s always a shell of what the record could actually be. As an artist, it’s my job to put my own spin on it and help convey the best story possible. I feel like I did that with this record.

Q) What has been the most rewarding part of working with Sam Thomas and Bryan-Michael Cox on this project?

A) It’s always great working with seasoned producers and people who have run the gamut of the music industry. It was almost like participating in an R&B bootcamp that brought me to the next level as a vocalist, writer and artist as a whole. I feel like I went into that situation one way and came out the other end of it on another level.

Q) In this song you take R&B to give it a real cinematic feel from catchy beats, building vocals, and sick pops of sound. How do you feel this unique flavor of sound enhances the song?

A) It keeps the listener on their toes. You could listen to this song one hundred times over, and each time you will hear something new that you never noticed. That’s the difference between a good song and a timeless classic. It never gets old and it’s like ear candy. I’m always trying to achieve that element in the records that I do.

Q) What, if any, sounds might you all have thought about adding to this song that you later decided not to add?

A) I can’t answer the question about sounds. But on the vocal side of things, there are a ton of harmonies and other things that I would’ve liked to add into the record. However, I didn’t because there is definitely such a thing as overworking a record. Making a record is like creating a painting. You want just the right amount of everything without doing too much and the same applies to creating a song. So, it was important that I kept it smooth for this record and not overwork it.

Q) What is your process for songwriting? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) I could do either. In more recent times, I have been exploring the lost art of writing the lyrics before the music. I think that’s important because then the lyrics become the focal point and everything is built around it; versus trying to fit vocals and lyrics into an already-created work of art.

Q) What was the hardest part about creating the lyrics to this song?

A) Shout out to Sickpen for crafting this record. I did the bridge and put my own creative spin on the record as a whole. It’s about catching a vibe. Music shouldn’t be difficult or you’re doing it wrong.

Q) Digging into the theme of this unbalanced relationship, you sing about moving on when love isn’t returned, leaving an unfair setting. What are some ways that you have coped during difficult times when you’re deeply attached and it’s not returned?

A) I’m not even gonna lie, I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation like that. But I think that’s the beauty of songwriting: you can take the experiences of either yourself or others and feel that expression or emotion as if it were your own. Then, you can translate that into song. It’s about telling not only your own story, but telling the stories of those around you.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production aspect of your songs?

A) There are different categories of production. I executively produce all of my music alongside my manager Angela Benson. I’m definitely not a “button pusher,” so definitely don’t ask me to produce a ballad. [laughs] However, when my producers are creating, I’m right there beside them and my cowriters and sound engineers giving them my creative energy and input. That’s why regardless of who produces me, my music remains consistent—because it’s all coming from me.

Q) With live performances on pause, do you have any plans to host a livestream to promote upcoming music?

A) Yes, I definitely have a few coming up. Definitely stay in tune on mattbworld.comor @mattbworld on all social media platforms.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) Yes! My debut US album drops at the top of next year. I also have a lot of other new records that I have been working on aside from the album, so definitely follow me on social media for more.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I’m not really too big on collabs. But if I had to pick, I’d go with Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and J Cole.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and your music?

A) Thank you for all of your continued support over the years. I love y’all.
