Nova Miller – Do It To Myself

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Retro Pop! It’s catchy pop with an overall retro vibe. I try to mix organic elements with current and relatable storytelling lyrics.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Charlie Puth inspires me so much because he really knows his craft and other than having a great voice he can really play instruments. Growing up big voices like Christina [Aguierla] and Mariah [Carey] really inspired me and made me find my inner pop diva.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Do It To Myself.”

A) It´s a retro pop bop about how we all put up walls sometimes. We hurt ourselves before the other person has a chance to. It´s so important to be brave enough to see your toxic traits – it’s the only way we can change them.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think the message of self-sabotage because we kinda all do it without knowing it one way or another. We always put up a front to protect ourselves from getting hurt by someone which normally ends up hurting yourself instead.

Q) How did you decide to sample The Mamas and the Papas on the track?

A) It´s one of my fav songs from the 60s! When it came together it was the first song that represented my love for that era, but still kept it fresh.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) I get inspired when I have a story to tell. It could be either someone else’s story or my own – like a word or a feeling I need to convert into music. Things that are really visual and concrete like paintings or nature or even smells make me wanna create music. I like starting out with a good guitar riff, but I love to mix it up and push myself as a writer so that it doesn’t become a routine.

Q) “Do It To Myself” was produced by The Monsters and the Strangerz, but how much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) Yes, and they killed it! Now that I’m getting older and my vision gets stronger, I absolutely have a voice in the creative process and a team that listens to my notes. The music is the most important to me, I’m very involved in getting the right chords and harmonies.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Nova Miller performance?

A) Surprises! Something I haven’t completely shown yet is the fact that I am a dancer. I used to dance like twenty hours a week up until I was twelve years old. Up-tempo fun and entertaining songs are just as important to me as being able to strip it back and play an acoustic song focusing on vocals. Other than guitar and piano, maybe I’ll bring out the violin for a moment – who knows!?

Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?

A) Definitely! Aiming to release a bigger project next year. I’m super excited for 2020.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) Honestly, as much as I love being nostalgic and performing shows at places when I was just starting out, I think it´s more fun seeing venues grow and meeting all the amazing new people that are starting to come along. I just sang the National Anthem at the Staples Center for the Logan Paul vs KSI rematch, which was one of the most amazing things I have ever done.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I would love to make a song with Charlie Puth, I think we would just nerd about music stuff for hours and hours. [laughs] I would also love to collaborate with more girls – Dua [Lipa] and Billie [Eilish] hit me up let’s make a new Bang Bang moment.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Recently found out about Steve Lacy!!!??! Been loving his music lately. Love his aesthetics. Also, Doja Cat’s song “Juicy.” It´s all over TikTok and on repeat every morning when I workout.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) The fans are everything! I talk to them constantly on Instagram, Twitter, singing videos on TikTok, even over text. If they take the time to write to me, I make the time to write back. It´s important to me because it’s so easy and quick. I just made a singing video in the parking lot and posted it on social media and all of a sudden, I had thousands of new amazing cool and funny people that supported me. I just wanna be friends with all of them.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) You’re IT!! You’re beautiful and so, so, so loved. I think about you every second of the day. Thank you for believing in what I do, It’s so special to be growing with you. And if you’re new, I welcome you to the Novanation.
