Novul – You A Thot
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) We love your new look! We have to ask, do blondes have more fun?
A) Well, thank you! Every single I drop I like to change up my looks slightly, while keeping my original look, like my blue brows. I feel like every single I create a new character for myself and for this one I wanted a more modern day Marie Antoinette. I wanted to feel powerful but poised and, yes, this blonde had a lot of fun!
Q) Talk about the story behind your new single “You a Th*t.” I know there is a “Temptation Island” connection.
A) Yes, I was actually watching “Temptation Island” (a dating show where you and your partner go off with single men and women to see if you get tempted to cheat or stay loyal) and I was just thinking damn what it would be like if I put myself in that situation. I’m very loyal and protective of my relationship, so I started writing this hook of what I would say if a girl came on to my man. The verses are more comical coming at someone but the hook being “You a thot, but also you’re just a thought” nothing more. The next day I took it to the studio and continued working on the verses and production with my producer Dave Berg. I wanted the beats to hit hard, making you wanna dance and feel yourself, bring your confidence to the next level. I’ve really been into Opera music and being a theatrical artist, I wanted the song to have those types of levels to really make it stand out and be different.
Q) The song opens with operatic inspired vocals. Where did the idea for this into come from?
A) Thank you!! Well, I’m such a visual artist and when I was writing and recording this song I was already visualizing and creating this storyline. I wanted to do something people weren’t expecting. Once the song was finished, I instantly created a visual mood board and sent it to my director friend Chancellor so we could start putting it together.
Q) The costumes were ba-nanas! We need scoop on wearing that pearl bodice and wig.
A) Oh, well thank you! [laughs] I’ve always had a love for fashion so putting this look together was such a treat! However, there is a story to all this. No one really knows this except the film team and cast, but my outfits didn’t end up showing up! The night before my mom and I were racing around Hollywood at 11pm trying to put together looks, especially it being so specific! I was rushing to love shops trying to find corsets, etc. I ended up having to push my shoot the next morning three hours just so my mom and I could go pull new looks for ten cast members plus myself. I was panicking but had to stay calm, get it done and in the end the looks were better. I guess God had it all planned out. [laughs] The wig was a custom piece done by Outfitter Wigs in Hollywood. I love it so much! She was a pretty penny that now sits in my closet next to my other twelve wigs! [laughs]
Q) You are a part of social media. What kind of response have you been receiving to the song?
A) Everyone is loving the video and the visuals. My Novulties have been nothing but supportive my whole journey and seeing everyone retweet it, share it, comment and like just makes me smile. It’s my fans that are keeping me going!
Q) We’d love to know if there are any upcoming plans for live performances for “You a Th*t.”
A) Yesssss! I actually have performed it two times before I released the single, just to see how people will react to it. I was getting people asking for the song afterwards or where they could find the song, at that moment I knew I had to release it! I’ll definitely be performing this one a lot! I mean, it gets you going!
