Interviews
Peyton Alex Smith – Legacies
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects you’ve been busy working on?
A) As of lately, I’ve been working on myself…When the industry shut down, due to COVID, I started watching a lot of movies and reading a lot of screen plays from some of my favorite films. I haven’t necessarily been in a rush to jump into anything. It’s been a really quiet, but inspiring time for me. I’ve been able to get to know myself a lot better.
Q) We thought the storyline about King Arthur was fascinating! Did you think his lineage might have gone somewhere different?
A) I thought it was a super dope storyline as well. I definitely didn’t see it coming at all. [laughs] I didn’t really think about it going somewhere different though. It was such a surprise. I really was just enjoying the moment. I’ve never put on armor or swung a sword before. It was one of my favorite storylines.
Q) Rafael was closed off to learning about his past. So, what made him decide to go see his biological father before he “passes?”
A) Over time I think being closed off caught up with him. I believe he was only closed off, as a defense mechanism. If he didn’t talk about it, then it didn’t happen. I think the time he spent with his father, and choosing to stay away from the school, opened him up exponentially. I definitely think he grew as a person and was open to dealing with his past and accepting it rather than running from it.
Q) Rafael has been through a lot…What is going through his mind while he’s stuck in the prison world?
A) I think Raf is ready to heal. Right before he was going to the prison world, he thought he was dying. I think he’s at peace finally. He’s there with his family and he’s safe from the danger of the supernatural world. I think he’s ready to just be normal.
Q) There was such a moving scene with Rafael telling embarrassing stories about himself to ease the sadness. Talk about filming that scene.
A) That was such a cool scene for me. That scene was shot in the same place where I first filmed on the show. Preparing for it was a true trip down memory lane (very nostalgic). Everyone was laughing and joking in between It was dope to be able reminisce on how far Raf has come since.
Q) There has always been feelings between Rafael and Hope, but has he truly moved past them?
A) I don’t know if we truly ever move on from people completely. There’s always that part of us, that will always have feelings, for someone we truly care about. I think Raf moved on, because he had to. He valued his relationship with his brother more than he cared about finding someone he truly loved. I think he felt that even entertaining those feelings would be a betrayal.
Q) One of our favorite scenes and most difficult was watching Rafael and Landon saying goodbye. What were some of your favorite scenes to film this season?
A) That was one of my favorite scenes as well. I also love working with Landon/Aria [Shahghasemi]. He is an amazing actor and anytime I get to work with him its exciting. I also enjoyed the armor scene. Although it was hard to shoot lol, it was extremely dope. I always like scenes, where I get to do stunts.
Q) Rafael wants Landon to live his life to the fullest. What else do you hope Rafael wishes for him?
A) I hope one day Landon can have a family of his own. That’s all we both wanted was to be a part of a real family that loved us.
Q) What have you personally taken away from your time working on “Legacies?”
A) My time on Legacies has been a lot of fun. It stretched me as an actor. I always take projects where I get to play someone I’ve never been before.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the work you have done?
A) The fans are amazing. I didn’t know how big “The Vampire Diaries”/ “Originals” universe was and to be a part of that, and to be loved, was a blessing. I’d like to thank the fans for their supports. It’s why I got into this business, to make people feel. I felt like I did what I set out to do.
