As Luke Garroway (Isaiah Mustafa) urges Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) to help him find Ollie (Alexandra Ordolis), Ollie assures Lilith (Anna Hopkins) that she and the other disciples will protect her. Lilith performs some magic that teleports her and Ollie to a different building, and declares that nobody will stop her from bringing Jonathan back.

A possessed Jace Herondale (Dominic Sherwood) attempts to escape his prison, but Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia) tells him his attempt is futile. Jace points out that she is trapping her brother in a box, but Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) declares that he’s not their brother and that they will bring the real Jace back. Jace mocks Alec’s love for his parabatai, and tries to get under Alec’s skin. He then taunts Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) about his relationship with Alec.

Luke and Simon arrive, and Simon yells at Jace for getting Clary Fairchild (Katherine McNamara) captured. Jace asks if he’s still mad Clary chose him and taunts him about the Seelie Court kiss. Luke restrains Simon and urges everyone to stay focused on curing Jace and rescuing Clary. They figure that they’re on their own, and Luke promises to find a way to rescue Clary before telling Simon to investigate the abandoned building. Simon argues, but Isabelle tells him to do it for Clary. Alec tells them that they can’t reveal the truth to anyone, and Magnus tells him that they need to talk about Jace.

Outside, Magnus tells Alec that they need to use Jace’s strongest connection to bring him back. Alec is eager to help, but Magnus warns him of the dangers. He insists he has to do this, insisting he’s nothing without Jace. Magnus agrees, but decides to use Isabelle’s connection to Jace as well. Alec doesn’t want to put Isabelle in danger, but Isabelle reminds him he ended up in a coma the last time he tried to use his parabatai bond to find Jace. Magnus explains that they will have to link with Jace to pull him out, and Isabelle agrees to help.

Clary is put on trial at the clave and the soul-sword is placed in front of her. She is hesitant to touch it, but Jia Penhallow (Francoise Yip) orders her to.  Jia asks why she came to Alicante, and the sword forces her to admit that she stole the Malakai configuration. Lilith asks her disciples to find out what happened to her Owl, and Ollie asks if it’s safe for her to go out with Simon able to destroy her. She tells her the Seelie Queen (Lola Flanery) gave the mark to him, and that she needs to visit her.

Simon rants about the situation to Maia Roberts (Alisha Wainwright), who declares she’s coming with him. He tries to talk her out of it, and admits that he doesn’t want to burden her while she’s struggling with Jordan Kyle’s (Chai Hansen) return. Maia insists she’s fine and they have bigger things to worry about. Jordan approaches them, and Simon is not happy to see him. Maia explains that he asked him to stay, but Simon tells her it isn’t necessary and tells Jordan to leave. She tells Simon about their conversation, and Jordan insists he wants to help. Simon tells him that they have a demon to hunt, and Jordan offers to help. Simon argues, but Maia agrees to let him come with them.

Luke meets with Maryse Lightwood (Nicola Correia-Damude), and assures her that the other wolves have no problem with ex-clave members. Maryse asks why Clary is being held, but Luke tells her that it’s risky to have too many people know. She asks if Jace knows, and Luke tells her that Jace is a survivor. He asks her if she can use her previous clave contacts to help negotiate Clary’s release, but she tells him that she’s no use. Luke tells her that she’s his only hope, and Maryse suggests contacting her ex-husband’s former mistress. Maryse promises to get this done, and Luke thanks her for her help.

As they prepare to begin the process, Jace asks Magnus, Alec, and Isabelle if they really think they can save Jace. Magnus tells them to try to find Jace quickly, and Jace questions why he wants to save him. Jace tells Magnus that Alec will always choose his parabatai, and Alec tells him to shut up. Magnus tells them to focus and connects the three of them with his magic. Jace touches the barrier to break the connection, and Magnus tells them they need to find another way.

Under the influence of the soul-sword, Clary tells Jia that she wasn’t the one to dig up Valentine’s body, but Jace. Jia asks why they found her in the cemetery and Clary tells her she helped Jace escape. She asks why Jace would dig up Valentine, but Clary admits she doesn’t know and that Jace probably killed Imogen. Jia asks why Jace would kill her, and Clary confesses that Lilith has possessed him.

Simon, Maia, and Jordan drive to the building in awkward silence. Jordan offers Maia his jacket, but she tells him she’s fine. Simon comments on the lack of traffic, but is met with tense silence. Jace wakes up bound by chains, and Alec explains that he isn’t going to let him use the configuration to hurt Jace. Isabelle tells him Valentine used the chains to hold an angel, and Jace replies that he’s not an angel. Magnus returns and links the three of them with his magic.

Alec and Isabelle find themselves inside Jace’s mind, and find Young Jace (Tomaso Sanelli), Young Alec (Leonidas Castrounis), and Young Isabelle (Ana Maria Mallinos) sparring inside the Institute. After the three tease each other, young Isabelle reminds them of the rule that three go into battle and three come out. Young Jace runs away when young Alec and Isabelle disappear, and older Alec and Isabelle follow him. They find themselves trapped and Alec tells Isabelle to stay close. Alec speculates that the Jace is the real Jace and part of Lilith’s torture is to take away his memories of them. Isabelle disappears and Alec calls out to her.

After massacring the seelie guards, Lilith approaches the Seelie Queen, who tells her that Edom has done wonders for her complexion. Lilith knows that the queen wants her gone, but tells her that she killed her soldiers in response to her mark killing her disciples. She accuses the queen of giving Simon the mark to banish her and requests it be removed. The Queen tells her she gave him the mark because he’s a daylighter, and Lilith orders her to remove the Mark of Cain. The queen refuses and tells Lilith not to attack, as she knows where the Owl is.

Jia asks Clary how Jace became possessed, and she tells her he was vulnerable. She asks why, and Clary tells her that Valentine killed him. Jia asks how Jace is alive now, and Clary pulls her hands off the sword, declares she doesn’t need it, and tells her about the wish. Jia tells her that they planned to save the wish in the event of a demon attack, and Clary replies that she doesn’t agree with the mass murder of demon-blooded beings, calling it a curse. Maryse visits Luke and tells him that Clary is on trial, and Luke insists he needs to break Clary out. She tells him it’s impossible, but Luke tells her that he can’t lose Clary.

Simon, Maia, and Jordan arrive at the building, and they look around. Jordan is surprised that the mark turned Lilith’s disciples into salt, but Simon tells him he didn’t do it on purpose. Maia comments that she smells blood and they find the plate Lilith used for the sacrifices. She tells Simon that there are several different blood scents, and Jordan determines that the top comes off. They slide it off, and Jordan identifies it as a demonic resurrection ritual. Simon takes pictures and steps outside to call Luke, and Maia questions when Jordan started studying demonic rituals.

Isabelle looks for Alec, but comes across young Jace playing piano. Jace is scared of her, but Isabelle assures him that she’s not going to hurt him. He accuses her of being Lilith and orders her to give his siblings back. Isabelle wins over his trust by telling him she’s a friend of Alec and Isabelle and singing the song Maryse sang to them every night. Jace asks Isabelle to come with him and they walk out together. Alec comes across a room with several dead Clarys and older Jace breaking down in the middle. Jace tells him he tried not to hurt her, but Alec assures him it’s not real. He promises to free him from Lilith, but Jace is scared of hurting him. Alec tells him he’s real, and Jace embraces him. Isabelle and young Jace arrive, and Isabelle embraces older Jace.

Simon calls Luke and tells him what they found before asking about Clary. Luke assures him that he’s working on it, and tells him he might be gone for a bit. Simon asks if there’s anything he can do, and Luke tells him to keep investigating Lilith. Maia asks Jordan why he’s doing this, and Jordan tells her he wants her to know he’s changed. She doesn’t want to hear it, but Jordan tells her that things and people matter to him now. Maia tells him to stop, and asks why he won’t let her hate him. She starts to transform and Simon embraces her to calm her down. Maia tells both of them to leave her alone and walks out of the building.

Magnus tells Alec to hurry up, but Jace tells Alec and Isabelle that he’s scared that Lilith will come and take him again. Alec promises they’ll stop her, but Jace tells them that killing him is the only way to stop her. Jace begs Alec to kill him, but he refuses. He then reminds Isabelle of everything he’s done, but she reminds him that it wasn’t his doing. Jace tells him that Lilith will make him do worse if she finds him and tells Isabelle that she would kill him if she loved him. Isabelle can’t do it and reminds him of their motto that three go in and three go out. The three hold hands and Alec promises they won’t let Lilith take Jace.

Lilith arrives as they return to the loft and throws Alec, Isabelle, and Magnus to the side. She levitates Magnus with her magic, and he tells her to kill him instead of Alec and Isabelle. Lilith tells him she doesn’t want a war with his father, and releases him before taking Jace with her. Magnus apologizes for being unable to stop her, and Alec reminds them they broke their promise to Jace. Maia tells Simon she needs to get away for a while, and asks if he can give her some space. Simon embraces her before Maia walks away.

Clary is led into her cell, and Jia asks if there’s anything else she like to say. Clary asks what she would do if she was in her situation and Aline was the one that died. Jia tells her that she’s too idealistic and that being a shadowhunter is about sacrifice. She tells her that she’s never understood that, and sentences Clary to death.
