Ben Pownall (Alex Roe) and Ryn (Eline Powell) have sex, but Ryn transforms into a mermaid midway through and strangles him. Ben then floats in the water as a merman as mermaids surround him. He wakes up from his nightmare and looks over at Ryn as she sleeps on the couch. Donna (Sibongile Mlambo), Levi (Sedale Threatt, Jr.), and Katrina (Aylya Marzolf) approach three beachcombers (Cameron McDonald, Mike Wasko, and Heather Feeney) and steal their clothes before walking into town.

Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola) offers Xander McClure (Ian Verdun) cereal, but Xander wants to know if Ryn knows where his father’s killer, Levi, is. He wants to use her to track him down, but Maddie advises Xander to not avenge his father’s death and insists that Ryn is not like that. He storms out, assuring Maddie that he’s going to take care of things. Ryn greets Ben and he fixates on her as she eats an apple. She asks where Maddie is, and he tells her she’s with Xander. Ryn asks if Xander’s okay, admitting she feels bad for him. She asks if Ben’s okay, and he replies that he is.

At the police station, Maddie tells Sheriff Bishop (Gil Birmingham) about the funeral and that she’s worried about Xander. Meanwhile, Xander loads his gun, but hides it when Widow McClure (Jill Teed) enters the room. She asks him to return a pan to Helen Hawkins (Rena Owen), but he tells her it’s not a good time. She replies that it’s not a good time for her either, and he agrees. Donna, Levi, and Katrina enter Helen’s shop, and she asks Donna why she came back. She answers that she’s there for Ryn, and Helen asks who Levi and Katrina are. Helen asks Donna if she killed McClure, but Donna insists that they want to bring Ryn home.

Helen remarks that the mermaids are more human than she realized with their aggression and plotting, asking what will happen if Ryn doesn’t want to go back. Donna asks where Ryn is, and Levi pushes Helen against the wall by the neck. Helen tells them she doesn’t know, and Levi releases her. Once they leave, Helen calls Ben to tell him what happened. He tells Ryn, and she assesses they want her back in the water. Ben asks what she wants, and she tells him she wants to be able to choose. He assures her that they’ll convince them, but Ryn tells him they won’t listen. She warns him they will hurt him if she doesn’t go back with them, and that the two with Donna are hunters. Ben tells her she can’t go back, as he needs her. Ryn tells him she knows where Donna will look for her.

The beachcombers, wrapped in towels, tell Bishop that three nudists that stole their clothes. Ben and Ryn go to the aquatic center and find the three mermaids waiting for them. Ryn agrees to go with them, and embraces Donna. However, Levi and Katrina advance on them, and Ryn translates for Ben that they intend to kill her. Donna defends Ryn, and Ryn tells them they are family. However, they continue to advance and Donna tells them that they have to kill her if they kill Ryn. Ben grabs a bucket of salt water and throws it on Levi and Katrina before running away with Ryn and Donna.

After they drive away, Donna explains to Ryn that Levi and Katrina told her they only intended to help retrieve her. Ryn understands, and Ben asks why they want to kill her. She explains that it’s due to her extended time on land, telling him the story of a mermaid that fell in love with a human and that the human killed their child due to its appearance. After the mermaid went back into the water, the human became angry and led a massacre of the mermaids. Ben tells her that Helen told him the story minus the child detail. Ryn explains that they are scared of repeating history and are now afraid of her.

Ben holds Ryn’s hand to comfort her, and gets a call from Maddie informing him of the mermaids’ arrival. He tells her what happened, and suggests taking Ryn and Donna somewhere safe. Ben agrees they need to keep them safe, and Maddie promises to talk to Bishop. Helen unlocks the door for Xander, who returns the pan and thanks her for everything she’s done to help. She talks about how horrible McClure’s death was, and he realizes she knows what really happened. Helen warns him that Levi is on land, and that he needs to protect himself.

Xander gets into his car and uncovers his rifle. Bishop declares that he’s going to round the mermaids up, and Maddie warns him of their strength. He reminds her he has backup, but she tells him that the other officers can’t know the truth. Bishop insists that the officers will believe that they are drug addicts, but Maddie tells him he can’t keep the officers from having questions for them. Aldon Decker (Ron Yuan) gets a call from Elaine Pownall (Sarah-Jane Redmond) thanking him for his help in getting her into the clinical trial. She mentions the funeral and tells him about McClure’s death before Decker hangs up on her.

Ben hides Ryn and Donna in his house, and comforts Ryn. She assures Donna that Ben is love, and Ben tells them to get down as they hear someone approach the house. Xander calls out and Ben lets him in. He sees Ryn and recognizes Donna as the nurse. Xander points his gun at them, and demands to know where Levi is. Ryn tells him that Levi is trying to kill them as well, and Xander gets upset at Ben for defending Ryn and Donna. Ryn suggests that Xander is right and that killing Levi and Katrina is the only solution. She offers to help him, and Xander joins them.

Bishop stops short when Levi and Katrina step in front of his car. Maddie hears his request for backup at the station, and Levi jumps on the hood of his car. Katrina attacks him through the window and he shoots at her, pursuing Levi when he runs away. Bishop pushes him into a garbage can with the car and puts handcuffs on him with the help of a Deputy (Ron Robinson) before putting him in the back of the car. He calls Maddie to inform her and she calls Ben to inform him. Ben tells Xander, and Maddie is in disbelief that Xander is with them. She warns him that Xander is out of control, and urges them to let the police take care of it.

Ben refuses and hangs up before telling Xander Katrina’s last location. Xander tells him it’s Levi he wants, but Ben suggests that they focus on Katrina since Levi is in custody. Xander turns around and heads to the location, while Donna tells Ryn that she can stay on land with Ben and Maddie once they kill Levi and Katrina. Levi wakes up in the back of Bishop’s car and breaks the barrier to the front with his head. Bishop yells at him to stop and crashes into another car. Bishop assesses his injuries and informs the department that Levi escaped custody before grabbing his gun and searching on foot.

Ryn calls out in mermaid song, and Katrina hears the call. As they hide behind the car, Xander wishes that they never caught Donna in the first place. Ben tells him that things will return to normal once they take care of Levi and Katrina, but Xander questions what’s normal anymore. Katrina approaches Ryn, who tells her she doesn’t want to fight. However, Katrina sees Xander point his gun at her and grabs Ryn. Katrina throws her into a nearby warehouse, and Ben tries to fight Katrina off with a baseball bat. Donna jumps on Katrina, and Xander points his gun at her. Xander looks up to see Levi standing on the rafters before jumping on him. Ryn grabs a chained blade to fight him off. Ryn chases Levi and Katrina out of the warehouse, and Ben and Donna leave Xander behind as they follow. Decker pulls up to Bishop’s car and listens to the police radio before driving away.

Xander calls out for Ben, and walks out of the warehouse. Decker offers his condolences, and suggests that they’re looking for the same thing. Xander pretends that mermaids don’t exist, but Decker offers him his help. Xander agrees, and asks if he’s messed up in the head like Ben is. Decker reminds him that he’s the one walking around town with a rifle, and Xander offers him Donna. Levi and Katrina break into Helen’s shop and grab some spears. Bishop tells Sylvia (Sarah Hayward) and her date (Jai Braithwaite) to get back inside as he patrols the streets.

As they walk, Ben tells Donna that he understands how big a deal it is for her to let Ryn stay and Katrina throws a spear at them before running away. Maddie pulls up next to Bishop, but Bishop tells her to go home as Levi approaches them. Bishop looks at Levi through the rearview mirror, but Levi knocks it off with his spear. Bishop shoots at Levi, but Levi throws a spear through Maddie’s car, hitting Bishop in the leg. Maddie shoots at Levi as he runs away, and Ben runs to them as Maddie checks on Bishop. Ben and Maddie help Bishop stand up and walk away.

Ben and Maddie help Bishop into Helen’s house, despite Bishop’s insistence that he’s fine. Bishop tells Maddie they need to stop Levi and Katrina, and tells her to call Deputy Marissa Staub (Tammy Gillis) and get every unit on the street. Ben stops her, telling her they won’t be able to contain the problem if they get more cops involved. Maddie tells him that it’s already out of control, but Ben insists they can solve this on their own. He assures her they can protect Ryn, but Maddie tells him it’s too late and questions his judgment. Ben suggests that she doesn’t care about Ryn, but she suggests that he’s the one putting her in danger. Ben grabs Bishop’s gun and tells Maddie that he’s going to help Ryn.

Ryn and Donna walk through a group of storage containers and split up. Katrina lunges at Ryn and they fight. Donna sees Decker approaching her, insisting he wants to help, but Donna pushes him out of the way. Ryn gets the upper hand in the fight, and strikes Katrina multiple times. She hesitates before striking the final blow, and helps her stand up. Ben sees Levi approach him and aims the rifle. He finds that he is out of bullets and knocks the spear out of Levi’s hand. Levi grabs the rifle and knocks Ben to the ground before picking up his spear. He advances on Ben, but Ryn orders him to stop as she, Donna, and Katrina approach.

Ryn orders him to listen, and Levi kneels before her. Bishop, Maddie, and Helen approach, and Helen explains that Ryn is now the dominant female in the mermaid’s matriarchal society. Ryn tells him to stand, but Xander approaches them with his gun. Ben tells him the issue is settled, but Xander is determined to have vengeance. Ben warns him this will cause more trouble, and tries to pull away the gun. However, Xander shoots, hitting Donna, and Ryn screams as Donna collapses.

Decker arrives but Ben pushes him away as Helen helps carry Donna away. Ryn tells Levi and Katrina to never come back as she helps Helen. The police arrest Xander and Maddie tells Ben that she’s going to stay with Bishop. She tells him to go, and Ben rejects Decker’s offer of assistance. Staub questions how Bishop’s injury happened, and he lies that it happened in the car crash before telling her that they’re not going to charge Xander.

Ben checks on Donna, and Helen tells him things aren’t good. Ryn tells Ben that Levi and Katrina are returning to the water and that Donna will follow when she recovers. Ben and Helen agree that they can’t take Donna to a hospital. Maddie takes care of Bishop, who tells her the mermaids can’t be there. Maddie suggests they can evolve like Ryn did, but Bishop warns her that he’ll prioritize the town if he has to pick sides. Helen tells Ben that Donna is getting worse, and Ben suggests to Ryn that Decker may be their only option. Ryn agrees and Ben makes the call, asking for help.
