Splitting Up Together – Heatwave

A weather woman announces that a heat wave is about to strike the area while Lena (Jenna Fischer) packs a plethora of medical supplies for the kids to have at camp. She wants to pack a tea kettle, but that’s where Martin (Oliver Hudson) draws the line.

Mason (Van Crosby) isn’t excited for camp this year, as his humiliating best friend Jules is going to be there and make him look lame in front of all of his other friends. Mason’s plan is to confront him and ask him why he insists on treating him like garbage, but Martin says he has to be more aggressive and talk smack to intimidate him.

Lena gets emotional while sending the children to camp, but Martin is excited—parenting has left him exhausted and he’s ready for a break. Lena compliments Martin on doing a great job raising the kids before crying into her purse.

Martin and Lena are both feeling awkward with the kids gone. Martin suggests that they share the house, but Lena thinks it’d be better if they stuck with the program. If the garage gets too hot, she’ll just go to a public place with air conditioning.

The two decide to continue their piña colada party tradition but invite tons more people so it’s not awkward. Arthur (Bobby Lee), Camille (Lindsay Price), and Lena’s dad (Geoff Pierson) watch Lena and Martin interact and are baffled. They’re getting along exceptionally well, laughing and dancing together, and their relationship while divorced is better than it ever was when they were married. Lisa (Monica Barbaro) gets there and is feeling the same chemistry. She awkwardly decides to duck out and get some food, as she’s not in the mood for a party.

That night, Lena’s bedroom gets unbearably hot, so she taps on the window and asks Martin if he knows where the box fan is. He tells her again that they should just share the house since it’s so much colder and he’s not looking forward to his garage week. Lena is worried what Lisa will think, but Martin guarantees her she’ll be fine with it. Lena agrees to stay in Mae’s (Olivia Keville) room until he heat wave breaks.

Martin tells Lena that Lisa is taking her to a hipster concert with her friends. Lena encourages Martin to change out of his tank top and into a t-shirt, bringing up what her dad and Camille said about their divorce being better than their marriage. They both think they might be right.

At the concert, Lisa is shocked that Martin is actually out on a school night. Martin immediately feels out of place when Lisa introduces him to her multi-colored hair friends with strange names and even stranger drink preferences. He drops all of the drinks he’s carrying when a crowd whips their phones out to take a selfie and spends most of the night liking Instagram photos Lena has posted of their kids at camp and the two of them at the party.

Camille and Arthur video chat with Lena, scolding her for temporarily moving back in with Martin. Camille warns her that, if she and Martin were still together, things would be exactly the same as they used to be. The only thing that’s different is they no longer have expectations for each other.

When they get home from the bar, Martin is tired and dehydrated, but Lisa is just getting started. She starts stripping for Martin in the entryway, but he says he needs a glass of water. She tells him she’ll fetch it and that she’ll meet him upstairs. She sighs when she gets up there and sees Martin has fallen asleep.

Lisa goes downstairs to grab herself a snack, but she runs into Lena, and they startle each other. Martin hears his and wakes up, apologizing to Lisa for forgetting to tell her about their current living situation. He comments on Lena’s sexy pajamas, and Lisa gets jealous and storms out.

Lisa confronts Martin, saying he always has excuses as to why he refuses to give up his ex-wife, but the only reason that would make sense is that he’s still in love with her. When Martin starts to head back inside, he sees Josh the turtle on the porch.

Martin tells Lena he thinks Josh coming back is a sign—he was handed his freedom, but he decided to go home. They two of start making out, and Lena is glad that she feels like Martin is finally starting to see her again. The two sleep in Lena’s bed together, and her artwork of the independent woman comes crashing down on top of them.

Arthur and Camille go shopping for cleaning supplies. While they’re at the store, they see Lisa Apple buying a pregnancy test.
