Splitting Up Together was a hit when it first premiered last year pulling us into the comedy and emotional journey of its characters. It’s such lighthearted show but simultaneously possesses heart and a deep connection with its viewers. The Season 2 premiere picked up right where the last season left off. In case you forgot, Martin (Oliver Hudson) and Lena (Jenna Fischer) slept together and it has surely made things a bit more complicated.

But while before this may have been the type of mistake they could never come back from, this time around there is some optimism and hope. Both have ventured and dabbled in other relationships, but ultimately found their way back together once again. But there is just one slight problem in this fairytale, Lisa Apple (Monica Barbaro) is pregnant. If you don’t remember who Lisa Apple is, let us remind you. It is the woman Martin was seriously dating before getting back with Lena.

While Martin and Lena don’t find out until the end of the episode about Lisa’s truth, their friends Arthur (Bobby Lee) and his wife Camille (Lindsay Price) are the ones that catch Lisa buying the pregnancy test at the end of Season One and are trying very hard not to say anything before confirming it’s true. They bring in Lena’s sister, Maya (Diane Farr), as a reinforcement and together they visit Lisa to confront her.

Meanwhile, Lena uses points to book her and Martin a weekend getaway to Malibu since the kids are away at camp. Although Maya and Lena’s father are skeptical of this newfound rekindling between the two, Lena decides she wants to do something different and spontaneous and Martin is more than pleased at this new version of Lena.

Upon arriving at the AirBnB in Malibu, Lena is extremely displeased with the way the beach house looks considering they promised a luxury king size mattress and a wonderful hot tub. But she discovers that the mattress is full size and the hot tub has no water in it and is quite filthy. Trying to maintain her cool about it, she attempts to pretend like it’s not a big deal in front of Martin, but as soon as he goes out for a jog she calls customer service to place a complaint.

When Martin gets back home, he’s flustered to see Lena calling and complaining instead of just focusing on all the good things they have going for themselves. And while we sort of agree with him, Lena has a point, too. This is a part of her and instead of trying to change her, he should embrace it and try to see it from her perspective.

Something beautiful happens when instead of getting mad at Lena and continuing the argument, Martin grabs the phone and yells at the customer service agent on the line demanding a refund. Lena in turn promises that she will try to chill out as well so they can both meet in the middle when it comes to what they want.

Their weekend ends on an inspiring, positive note  until they get home to find Arthur, Camille, and Maya waiting for them. They all decided that the right thing to do was tell Lena and Martin about Lisa’s pregnancy, even if it breaks their hearts. And just like that, a relationship that seemed be turning a new leaf and a new future comes crashing down on both Martin and Lena. What will happen in the episodes to come? If the promos are any indication–it’s about to get pretty dramatic in the world of Splitting Up Together.
