As they walk into Scarlet Magazine we see Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy) tell Kat Edison (Aisha Dee) that she needs a new sewing machine, but that they’re expensive. Sutton asks Kat if she’s heard from Tia Clayton (Alexis Floyd) and Kat tells her Tia has asked her to meet in an hour. They walk into the office with Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens) and find the office in chaos. Sage (Stephanie Costa) tells them that the hackers have released every email on the server, welcoming them to hell.

Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin) apologizes to everyone, promising they’ll get to the bottom of the hack. She tells them Scarlet has experienced worse and urges everyone to get back to work. Oliver Grayson (Stephen Conrad Moore) tells Sutton they’ll be sending apology gifts today. Sutton asks who he offended, and he replies the city of Manhattan.

Kat meets with Tia, admitting that she feels embarrassed about the previous night. Tia tells her not to worry, but says it’s a mistake to continue being her campaign manager. Kat is in disbelief as Tia explains that personal feelings shouldn’t be involved in the campaign. Tia gives her a list of replacements, assuring her she still has a chance to win.

Sutton goes through Oliver’s emails where he has made snarky comments about designers, determining which comments need a phone call. Sutton gets a call from Babs Brady (Rya Kihlstedt) who asks about the hack and tells her she needs money to fix her car. Babs asks about Richard Hunter (Sam Page) and Sutton reluctantly agrees to send her the money.

Jacqueline asks Jane about her progress on the list of names Ingrid gave her and Jane tells her nobody is willing to back up Ingrid’s story so far. Jane calls Ryan Decker (Dan Jeannotte) to vent about her lack of results. She questions if she should not say she’s from Scarlet, but Ryan points out how unethical it is. He urges her to not do something she’ll regret and tells her the advance reviews on his book are great. He tells her he’s been asked to write a guest column for Slate and advises Jane to not lose herself by being dishonest.

Sutton tells Jane and Kat that she won’t be able to buy a sewing machine after loaning money to Babs. Kat offers to help her out, and expresses her frustration with Tia leaving her campaign. Sage shows them a tabloid story that involves an email Jacqueline sent five years ago about advertiser Bobby O’Neill (Peter Francis James) nearly dying in her office.

Sutton, Jane, and Kat go to the fashion closet and talk about the incident. Jane reminds them it was her first day at Scarlet and flashes back to walking into the office that day. She sees Kat making out with a guy in the lobby and Kat promptly deletes the guy’s number after walking away. Soon after, Sutton, Jane, and Kat find themselves in the same elevator.

The three walk into Scarlet and Jane talks to Martha (Eva Avila) about where to go for her first day. Jacqueline greets Martha and introduces herself to Jane. Jane is starstruck but introduces herself. Jacqueline asks if she’s a writer and Jane replies she’s just an intern. Jacqueline tells her she can be both, commenting she looks like a writer to her.

Andrew (Adam Capriolo) greets Jane and Lauren Park (Emily C. Chang) tells him she’ll take Jane as her assistant. Jane is starstruck by Lauren, but Lauren orders her to get coffee for the advertiser meeting. Sage introduces herself to Sutton and Sutton asks how she was injured. She tells her it was a sex accident and Sutton comments it would make an interesting article. Sage tells her she’ll be returning tomorrow and thanks Sutton for filling in.

Garrett (Shawn Baichoo) has Kat film Andrew taking the ice bucket challenge. Once Garrett leaves, Kat comments that Scarlet used to be ahead of trends instead of just following them. Kat sees Jane carrying the coffee and tells her she shouldn’t give Lauren lobby coffee. She tells her what coffee shop to go to and Jane thanks her.

Sutton calls her temp agency, asking if there’s another job available. The agency tells her there’s nothing available and Sutton goes into the fashion closet, looking at the outfits inside. Garrett gives Kat instructions on editing the ice bucket video and Kat suggests they get some content for Snapchat. He rejects the idea and tells her that he and Jacqueline need the Woman Crush Wednesday pitches by the end of the day.

Jane brings the coffee to the meeting and Lauren yells at her for being late, telling her that there are several women waiting to take her place. On the verge of crying, Jane asks Kat where the bathroom is, and Kat tells there’s better place to get away. Kat takes her to the fashion closet where Sutton is trying on clothes.

Jane is impressed by the closet, commenting that it’s better than crying in the bathroom. Sutton comments that there should be a room for interns Lauren has made cry and urges Jane to try on some clothes. The three bond as they try things on in the closet and then eat sandwiches from the refrigerator as they talk about their recent hookups.

Andrew yells at them that they’re eating the sandwiches reserved for Jacqueline’s lunch meeting with Bobby, ordering them to fix it. Jane is worried about being fired, but Sutton tells them she knows where all the food in the building is. She offers to steal sandwiches for them, reminding them it’s her last day at Scarlet. They realize they don’t have each other’s phone numbers and exchange them.

Sutton goes up to the board meeting but finds that Richard is still in the room. She says hello and they are smitten with each other at first sight. They introduce themselves and Sutton tells him she needs the plate of sandwiches to fix the trouble she’s gotten into. Richard is intrigued what kind of trouble can be fixed with sandwiches and Sutton tells him she doesn’t have time to tell him. He agrees to keep her secret and lets her take the sandwiches.

Jane, Kat, and Sutton observe Jacqueline’s meeting with Bobby and Sutton asks if they want to get drinks after work with her. Kat and Jane agree, and Bobby has an allergic reaction to the sandwiches. Jacqueline asks if anyone an epi-pen and Bobby is taken away on a stretcher. The three agree to meet in the fashion closet and Jane questions if they should say something. She expresses disbelief at her first day at Scarlet, admitting that she’s wanted to write for Scarlet forever.

Kat tells them she got a job at Scarlet through her father and comments that she doesn’t feel comfortable speaking up about the digital department’s missed opportunities. Sutton urges Kat to speak up and assures Jane that she’ll get the opportunity to write for Scarlet someday. Kat admits that she doesn’t want Sutton to leave and Sutton tells her she doesn’t have the money to stay in New York.

Jane suggests she become Lauren’s full-time assistant and admits that she loves it at Scarlet. Sutton and Kat agree, and Sutton declares they should all find a way to stay. Kat gives Jacqueline the pitches, telling her and Garrett she’s included additional pitches to expand Scarlet’s social media presence. Jacqueline asks why she hasn’t heard this before, admitting she likes the idea.

Sutton approaches Lauren and tells her that her male counterparts at other magazines have assistants. Sutton offers herself for the role and Lauren likes the idea. Jacqueline finds Jane writing in her notebook and Jane admits she likes writing by hand. Jacqueline asks what she’s writing about and Jane tells her she’s writing about expectations. Jacqueline advises her to go to the copy department the next day and Jane thanks her.

That evening Kat comments that it feels like they’ve been friends forever as they drink together on a bench. Jane comments that she doesn’t know how she would have gotten through the day without them. Sutton declares they need to have each other’s backs and Jane toasts to their long and prosperous careers at Scarlet. Sutton asks if they know a place to stay, and Jane suggests she stay at her apartment.

In the present, Jane, Kat, and Sutton tell Jacqueline about their role in Bobby’s hospitalization and they are surprised that Jacqueline isn’t mad. Jacqueline explains that her and Bobby go way back and comments that the truth is very powerful. The three toast to not getting in trouble with Jacqueline and Sutton gets a text from Richard asking which sewing machine she bought. Kat suggests she tell him the truth and declares that she’s going to ask Tia to reconsider being her campaign manager, admitting she’s the reason she’s running in the first place.

Sutton encourages her and Jane shows them a video of Pamela Dolan (Laila Robins) giving an interview about getting to photograph the new Gucci campaign. She expresses frustration that she only has one person left that can help her expose Pamela’s abusive practices, a hairdresser. Jane questions if she should talk to her as just a client but Kat reminds her that the truth is very powerful.

Jane gets a haircut from Christina Rose (Mylene Dinh-Robic) who comments that she prefers this to doing photoshoots. Jane confesses that she’s a writer for Scarlet and asks about her experience about Pamela. Christina refuses to talk about it but Jane admits she still needs a haircut.

Richard asks Sutton about the sewing machine and she tells him the truth. She admits she didn’t tell him because she’s been dealing with Babs on her own for so long and Richard thanks her for telling him. Richard promises he’ll only be involved as much as she wants him to be and shows her an email he sent to Dev after their first meeting about how smitten he was with the “sandwich thief.”

Jacqueline apologizes to Bobby about the email she sent and he promises to make a statement that the email was a joke. He asks how her husband is and she tells him they’re going strong. Bobby says he’s getting a divorce from his wife and makes a comment about not getting over the one that got away. However, Jacqueline tells him that their relationship was a long time ago and he pulls out a bottle of wine from her desk.

Ryan visits Jane and asks how things went. Jane tells him that she told the truth, didn’t get the story, and needs to move on. Ryan replies they can’t win them all and tells her that the editor likes his column. She’s happy for him and they agree that they will celebrate each other’s’ successes no matter how rough the other’s day was.

Kat visits Tia and asks to talk. She tells her that she thinks her decision is a mistake, telling her what they’re doing with this campaign is incredible. Kat promises to walk away if she still refuses and Tia asks her to sit. Tia tells her she doesn’t have the same confidence as her, telling her about her own struggle with accepting her sexuality. Kat thanks her for telling her but admits that it sounds difficult and lonely. She offers to be there if she wants to talk and Tia kisses her.
