The Flash – The Exorcism of Nash Wells

Evil Iris (Candice Patton) asks Kamilla (Victoria Park) how she’s feeling. They start to talk to Eva (Efrat Dor) and Kamilla asks where her counterpart is. Eva says she isn’t a problem anymore. She tells them that she created a device capable of creating light into energy called the prismatic refractor. She shows them a replica she made. She gives it to them and tells them to retrieve the original. She says that her R-CEM rejected it and that’s what will procure the success of her long term plans. She tells them to go get it from Mercury Labs. Evil Iris says success is assured. 

 

Barry (Grant Gustin) is monitoring Thawne (Tom Cavanagh), who is still in Nash’s body, in the cell. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) join him and say they need to figure out how to make the artificial Speed Force. They have to monitor his speed output before it’s up and running, so they give him a device that will track how much speed he has left. Thawne keeps yelling that he’s Nash and wants out, so the three go to see if he’s telling the truth. 

 

Joe (Jesse L. Martin) is meeting with Chief Singh (Patrick Sabongui) to give him more information on the Carver case. Joe says he’s found evidence of multiple coverups and every victim has something in common. Joe thinks someone is a mole, but Singh wants him to step back from all of this after he learns that The Flash knows about it. Joe assures him it’s not personal, but Singh tells him not to jump to conclusions because this is his first year as captain.

 

Barry, Caitlin and Cisco are talking to who they’re trying to decipher if it is Nash or not. Caitlin shows them his brain waves again and sees that there are now multiple ones that are interwoven together. They don’t understand how it’s possible or how they can fix it. Wells tells them he has a multiversal splicer that may be able to split all the Wells’ up. Cisco finds it and then inserts it into the gauntlet. Right before he does Caitlin tells him to wait, but he already gets it inserted and it causes an explosion that knocks them on their backs and allows Thawne to escape. Barry races after him to find him getting ready to time travel again. Barry gets him up against a wall as Thawne taunts him by feeding into his insecurities. Barry starts to vibrate his hand to put it through his chest, but Caitlin yells for him to stop and Cisco shoots Thawne. 

 

Barry says Thawne only went to the Starchives. Caitlin tells Barry he can’t be there because he tried to kill Thawne and his speed also runs out when he’s angry. Barry tries to debate her and says he can just use Velocity X to boost him. Caitlin shuts that idea down immediately, but Barry doesn’t want Thawne to hurt more people. Caitlin says losing his powers could make things worse, so he needs to go. Barry takes that as her saying she can’t trust him and leaves. 

 

Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) brings Cisco some “supplies” after she got a call from him. Cecile says she feels raw hatred from Thawne and Cisco tells her that he needs her to psychically monitor Nash to see if he’s free so that they can do their exorcism. Cisco turns on the machine and we’re warped into Nash’s mind. We see Nash (Tom Cavanagh) on Earth-719 eight years ago. He walks into his tent to find a little girl named Maya (Briana Tedesco) who asks about getting a treasure out of something he caught. She breaks it and tells him that what’s inside is worth more than the crystals he is talking about. He says to never give anybody something without asking for something in return. He finds out that she doesn’t have parents and invites her to help him with myth-busting. Cecile feels that Nash is hurting and then we see him inside a cave where he gets cornered by Thawne. They realize that Thawne is now feasting off of Nash’s pain.

 

Evil Iris and Kamilla are at Mercury Labs. The woman they are with leaves, so Evil Iris and Kamilla use a camera to find out where the device is. They locate it, but something falls from the ceiling before they can get to it. A light-based meta, who they assume to be Carver’s meta, comes from the ceiling to try and steal the device. Evil Iris alerts The Flash to handle it, but when they get the alert at S.T.A.R. Labs Caitlin won’t let him go. She tells him that Frost will handle this one. 

 

Frost (Danielle Panabaker) gets there just as Sunshine (Natalie Sharp) is pulling the device out. Sunshine goes invisible and once she reappears the two begin to fight. Back at S.T.A.R. Labs Barry can’t take it and injects himself with Velocity X. He shows up to Mercury Labs and tries to fight Sunshine, but he gets stopped and loses the device in the process. Sunshine attacks Frost by beaming a light at her chest, but before she can do more damage Joe arrives and she escapes. 

 

They realize they have more Black Hole assassins. Barry feels bad because he didn’t stay behind and used the Velocity X. Joe encourages Barry to stay away and Barry agrees that he will until he gets his powers under control. Evil Iris comes in to tell them that Sunshine’s name is Millie Rolands. She was recruited into a covert division after the particle accelerator left her with the ability to bend sunlight. Barry moves away and Evil Iris asks if they know what she was after. Joe pulls out the prismatic refractor and lets her know what Sunshine was looking for. Joe looks at Evil Iris strangely when she asks why Carver was after his own tech and Joe says they don’t know why, but that he’s glad they’re okay as he gestures for Evil Iris to check on Barry. Evil Iris gets the hint and tells Barry she’s glad he’s alright. Joe says he’s not letting the device out of his sight now. Evil Iris suggests that he leave it at S.T.A.R. Labs, but Barry doesn’t think they’ll be able to keep it there. Evil Iris agrees and starts talking to Joe about it, but Joe looks at her skeptically again and tells her to go after her husband. 

 

Evil Iris goes to Barry and asks if he wants to get away. He says he just needs some space. She says that the Barry she knows would not let him not having powers keep him from saving people. She encourages him and says that he is just as much of a hero as The Flash. Barry says he doesn’t know how to help them, but she says he’s stuck on the idea that The Flash is supposed to be limitless. She reminds him that all metas have their limits and he has to figure out what they are. He agrees and leaves to find Joe. Evil Iris calls Kamilla to tell her she knows where the refractor is going. 

 

Nash asks Thawne why he’s keeping him there. Thawne tells him it’s negative so it is basically fueling his Speed Force. He continues to taunt him about Maya and he asks why Nash wants to leave the memory. He realizes that Maya died and Nash starts to yell that it wasn’t his fault. Cecile senses that Thawne is starting to completely take over Nash. Thawne starts to come forward and he grabs a hold of Cisco before he can stop him. Cecile punches him and Cisco tells her that Thawne just connected to the Speed Force. He mentions if it happens again that they’ll be in trouble. 

 

An officer tells Joe that the transport is secured. Singh comes to say that he’s there to secure the transport because he agrees that Carver has someone on the inside. Joe thanks him and they leave to go to the dock for the transport. Once out of the office, Sunshine appears from her invisible form. 

 

Joe and Singh meet the A.R.G.U.S. men, but Sunshine appears and starts to beat the guards down. She manages to knock everybody down, but Joe throws the refractor at Barry before she can get it. She chases him into his lab so that they can trap her without sunlight. They cut the lights and Barry cuffs her.

 

Singh asks if Sunshine was the mole. Joe says that it could make sense because she’s the perfect invisible agent. Barry stays behind as they leave to go work on Sunshine’s case. 

 

Cisco says it’s only a matter of time before Thawne takes over Nash’s body. Cecile sees a picture of Nash and Maya. She realizes that the feeling Nash has been having is parental and grief. They determine that Thawne is holding Nash in the memory of her death. Barry walks in to tell them Nash has to be the one to free himself and he had the M.A.D. 2.0 to help get inside his mind to help force Thawne out.

 

Barry says he won’t lose any more speed. They enter Nash’s mind where Nash is still saying it’s not his fault repeatedly. Barry tells Thawne it’s time for him to go, but Thawne states it’s too late. Barry tells him he isn’t going to win this time. While Barry talks to Thawne, Cisco tries to encourage Nash to fight back. Nash starts to hear Allegra’s (Kayla Compton) voice. Thawne tells Barry that Nash’s grief is like Barry’s. He says that the loss of a daughter is hard and taunts Barry about his relationship with Nora. Nash yells that he can’t go into the cave. Barry gets angry, but he tells Thawne that he is done letting Thawne have power over him. He says their emotions give them their strength and they can overcome him. Cisco tells Nash that he has to face it and Nash gets up to do just that. 

 

He walks into the light in the cave. An older Maya (Kayla Compton) goes to grab the treasure that they found. She struggles, but Nash tells her to try again. She gets it, but she slips and is hanging from the side. She eventually falls off the side of the cave. Nash relives the moment, but comes out on the other side. He says it was his fault but Barry sees that Nash is taking control of his pain. This causes Thawne to disintegrate and they get Nash back after Thawne’s electricity leaves Nash’s body. They get Nash back as he breaks down from the aftermath.

 

They don’t see any of Thawne’s energy in Nash, but that doesn’t mean that he is dead. Cisco says he’s going to check on Nash while Barry goes to check on Caitlin. 

 

Nash tells Cisco how bad it was to go through all of that. Cisco says he’s free of it, but he still has the other Wells’ inside his mind– they’re a part of him now. He brushes that off and says he’s grateful. He thanks Cisco and Cisco gives him his photo back before he goes. Cisco encourages him to make things better with Allegra. He gets how it can be difficult to decipher feelings about a doppleganger, but he did it with Harry and he thinks Nash can do it with Allegra. Nash sees Harry before he leaves. 

 

Barry apologizes to Caitlin about not following her advice. She accepts and Cisco comes to give them an update. Caitlin worries about making the Speed Force because of how coming into contact with Thawne’s went. Barry says Nora is the answer to helping them build a Speed Force. He shows her journal saying that Thawne taught Nora how to build a Speed Force so he can teach them.

 

Evil Iris and Kamilla deliver the refractor to Eva through the mirror in Iris’ office. Eva says Carver is probably still looking for her toys. She says as long as they stick to the plan then she is one step closer to liberation.
