Over a drink, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) discuss the situation with Hope (Danielle Rose Russell). Marcel explains that Freya and Davina have been checking all the spell books but there’s no quick fix, not even a binding spell. And now that Hope has triggered her werewolf curse, it’s a sure bet that once she turns at the full moon she won’t survive the night. Marcel thinks that they can’t keep this from Hope any longer as she should be given a chance to say her goodbyes. “And we both know who needs to tell her,” Marcel says.

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) watches over his sleeping daughter. When he leaves Hope’s room, Klaus tells Elijah that they are taking her to Mystic Falls where those at Hope’s school know how to deal with a wolf’s first transformation. He tells Elijah that “We’ve defied the inevitable for a dozen lifetimes, I’m not about to surrender to it now.  Please Elijah, you’re the only one I trust,” Klaus tells Elijah.

In Mystic Falls at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, Caroline (Candice King) is giving a tour talking about how the school has prepared students for the ivy league and believes in an inclusive blend of the species. “Where do you keep the hybrids, in the root cellar?” Klaus interrupts. Caroline asks the tour group for a minute so she can show the lost janitor Bob (Klaus) the toilets. Caroline reminds Klaus that they made a deal about him showing up in Mystic Falls. Klaus explains that Hope is dying because she consumed the dark magic and now it’s consuming her. He tells Caroline that he needs a very rare type of witch from the Gemini coven. “I need your daughters Caroline,” Klaus says.

In the school library, Hope is looking at the diary of Stefan Salvatore that is in a display case. “We’re not supposed to touch it but I have the whole thing memorized. Spoiler alert: Dad is the villain and you’re the evil henchman,” Hope tells Elijah. Elijah says it’s a bias opinion.  Hope says that spending the day with anyone else what make her feel better. Elijah suggests they go to a place he knows in town that makes good burgers and if she doesn’t want a burger, she can have a milkshake.

Caroline refuses to let her daughters help. Klaus says they were born to syphon magic. “So after they syphon it from Hope what are they supposed to do with it? You can’t just shove a demon in a jar and put it on a shelf,” Caroline says. Klaus tells Caroline they can put it in him then throw him to the bottom of the deepest ocean. He promises that he won’t put her daughters in danger but has to help his.

Elijah and Hope sit outside at a food café. Elijah looks at the building across the street which used to be a Mikaelson property.  He recalls the hours Klaus spent mixing paints and how one time Mikael struck his brother across the face with a branch Klaus was using as a paint brush. It was then the Elijah made a vow to protect Klaus from Mikael. Klaus had wanted them to run off together but Elijah refused to leave Kol and Rebekah at Mikael’s mercy. But sometimes he wish he and Klaus had left together. Their server Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) comes to take their order. When Hope introduces Elijah as her uncle, Landon calls him Mr. Marshall as Hope Marshall was the name Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) registered her daughter as at the school.  Landon is a musician and has dreamed of one day going to New Orleans where Hope is from. He invites Hope to a concert in the park that night but she says she can’t go.  After London leaves, Hope reveals to Elijah that she knows she is dying.

Caroline talks with her daughters Josie (Bella Samman) and Lizzie (Allison Gobuzzi) about helping Hope. They want to know what they will get for helping Hope. The girls want new cell phones, to go to the senior Winter Solstice Dance and to take the anti-feminist length of the skirts from the dress code. “It’s oppressive and not cute,” they say. “No to the phones, maybe to the dance and yes to denying the patriarchy one plaid skirt at a time,” Caroline tells her daughters and they agree.  “Now Mr. Mikaelson is going to explain what he wants you to do very clearly and kindly without even a hint of temper or frustration,” Caroline tells Josie and Lizzie. But before Klaus can explain what he needs, Alaric (Matt Davis) shoots him with a crossbow. He doesn’t know what’s going on but definitely no.

Hope admits that it wasn’t hard to figure out she was dying.  They overhear some rich Mystic Falls taunting Landon and refusing to give him a tip. Elijah suggests they go for a drive; he’ll let Hope drive the Bentley. But before they leave, Elijah leaves three hundred dollars on the table. As she drives, Hope talks about being a miracle baby and a mistake at the same time and how the universe is now trying to reset the balance of nature. Arriving at Mystic Falls High School, Hope decides to help Landon pay back the rich jerks by using her powers to blow out the windows of one of their expensive cars.

Alaric can’t believe that Caroline still allows Klaus to get to her. He has no problem with helping Hope but won’t use his daughters to do it. Klaus manages to escape from the ‘baby werewolf holding cell’ Alaric placed him in and tells him and Caroline that once he has the syphoned dark magic inside himself, someone needs to stake him.  Klaus shows Caroline a remaining white oak stake and says someone will have to stake him. When they are alone, Caroline tells Klaus “This would be so much easier if you’d just stay the big bad wolf.”

Elijah urges Hope not to give up on the fight; her father needs her. “You’re the reason his life of torment has not been in vain,” Elijah tells Hope. But Hope is tired of fighting. “I just want my mom,” she says before collapsing. Elijah carries her back to Klaus. While unconsciousness, Hope sees Hayley in the land of the dead. “Why are you here? It’s not your time yet. You have to get back to your dad,” Hayley tells her daughter.” Hayley tells Hope that what happened this past year was about hatred that’s existed long before the both of them were born. The teen wants to stay there with her mom.  But Hayley tells her daughter that it’s not her time yet. Hope is worried that her mother is alone.  But Hayley shows her that her parents, her grandmother Mary and Hayley’s husband Jackson (Nathan Parsons) are there. Hayley assures Hope that she is at peace because of her. “The very best of me is in you,” Hayley says, “I love you always and forever.” Then, Hayley asks Hope to do something for her. Klaus manages to get Hope’s heart to start beating again and Hope returns to the land of the living. “I don’t want to die,” Hope tells her father. Klaus assures that he’s found a way to save her life and that everything will be better in the morning. He explains that once Hope is mid transformation, the Saltzman girls will syphon the magic out of her and then he’ll dispose of the magic later. Seeing Elijah sitting on a bench, Hope tells her father she’ll be right back then goes to talk with her uncle. Elijah comments how he thought when Hope was born she’d be the savior of them family but it wasn’t fair to put that burden on her. Hope reminds Elijah that he devoted his life to protecting her father, so they were both saddled with burden beyond their control.  Hope tells Elijah about seeing her mother and that Hayley said to tell him that she’d dance with him again someday.

Klaus thanks Caroline for allowing her daughters for taking part in this mess. Caroline tells Klaus how years ago when her girls were little and she was in trouble, she put them in the car and began driving and arrived in New Orleans looking for him but he wasn’t there. Klaus watches as Hope dances with Landon.

He runs into Elijah. Caroline told Elijah that Klaus plans to have the syphon dark magic go inside him and then stake himself. Elijah urges Klaus to stake him instead saying that his (Klaus) daughter needs him. They fight. Klaus knocks Elijah out and tells his unconscious brother to look after Hope. Then, Klaus takes Hope into the woods and gives her the syphon potion. He tells Hope that the transformation will take hours if she fights the pain. Hope turns into a wolf. Josie and Lizzie perform the syphon spell and the dark magic goes inside Klaus.  Elijah wakes up and arrive just as Klaus is about to stake himself. “NiKlaus, don’t,” Elijah begs.
