Theory – Say Nothing

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Hard to say. We’re a rock band that has changed a lot over the years. I like to think people are fans of our songs and not necessarily our sound.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Anything from classic rock to grunge to pop. Really fell in love with Led Zeppelin as a kid and it continued into bands like STP and Pearl Jam.

Q) Talk about the story behind your single “History of Violence.”

A) It describes a story of a woman trapped in an abusive relationship where she feels the only escape is to kill her lover and spend life in jail ironically freeing her from him.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) Hopefully, there is a connection to the lyrics and empathy for the protagonist. I love to try to paint a picture, put you in the shoes of the character.

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) We wanted to keep it as close to the lyrics as possible without trying to trigger people. Sam Sulam did an amazing job here. Love that we were able to keep the focus on her and not have the band disrupt that.

Q) Tyler, you came up with the track “World Keeps Spinning.” What inspired this song?

A) This song is autobiographical, about my own struggles with anxiety and depression over the years.

Q) What advice would you offer others suffering from depression and anxiety?

A) Take it day-by-day. Long-term anxiety can lead to depression so try not to fight it and understand it as much as possible. Anxiety can make you feel so alone when it’s usually not the case.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Lyrics usually come first but with melody the music is not far behind, sometimes both together but rarely music first anymore.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I’m quite involved. I have a home studio where a lot of pre-production takes place and, usually, we keep some of it on the final product.

Q) What are some themes explored on your new album Say Nothing?

A) Racism, domestic violence, anxiety and depression, polarizing of American politics and, of course, love!

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to this album as a whole?

A) Just that! We built this to be listened to front to back with interludes and a track listing that we created and listened to top to bottom in the studio until it was just right. It’s a very solemn album that is hyper-realistic feeling song wise, I think.

Q) What can fans expect from a live THEORY performance?

A) Nowadays we try to play stuff from all our records, but it gets tough when we have so many songs. We usually give the fans what they want and play the most popular tracks with a few fun surprises.

Q) What songs off the new album are you looking forward to performing live?

A) “World Keeps Spinning” for sure. It’s a heavy track and I think a lot of people resonate with the lyrics.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) Going to new places is always exciting. We went to Australia for the first time a couple years ago and it was beautiful.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Maggie Rogers. Very talented, great voice and she seems like she really loves what she does.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Inhaler and Sam Fender are great. Check them out.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Coming from an age when everything was mysterious to a time when everything is out in the open, it’s definitely a hard shift to make. But we embrace it because it really is enjoyable to interact with fans. Some people assume we hate it, but it’s really the highlight of what we do.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Thank you! Seriously we can’t do it without fans, they are our everything!!
