Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) If there were three words to describe my sound it would be eclectic, warm and unique.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Growing up I always listened to SWV, TLC, Tamia, Aaliyah, Brandy, Monica, Ciara, Keyshia Cole and many others. I would say the present-day artists who’s work inspires me the most is Alex Isley, Jojo and Victoria Monet.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Same Lame.”

A) Growing up I’ve always listened to TLC and I consider them one of my biggest inspiration when it comes to my music alongside SWV, Aaliyah, Brandy, Tamia and others. Working with T-Boz and Chilli was definitely a big “pinch me” moment and I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to work with her and learn from her. We wanted to create the “No Scrubs” of 2021, so this is how the song came about. I want this song to serve as a friendly reminder to always remember your worth.

Q) How did you come to work with T-Boz & Chilli on this track?

A) The producer was able to connect us and have all three of us on the track.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think it gives fans a certain sense of nostalgia having T-Boz & Chilli on the track and also referencing “No Scrubs” as well! I definitely wanted to stay true to late 90’s early 2000’s R&B when it came to the writing of the track.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) I normally get sent the beat or hear it for the first time in the studio. After listening to it around two to three times, I head over to the booth and start toplining melodies over it. I normally do this two or three times. After top lining, we (songwriters and engineer) listen to all toplines and we pick and choose which parts fit best as a hook, verse, bridge, etc. and then I replace the topline with lyrics!

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) It really depends on the song and the producer! Some producers I’ve worked with prefer to do their own thing, but some are also very collaborative. It truly depends on the person and project, but I always like to have a hand in all aspects of my career, especially the creation of any visuals or music.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) Yes! Many singles to lead up to an EP before the year ends.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) Oh man, it’s been so long since I’ve last performed due to the pandemic! If I had to pick my favorite location, it would have to be SXSW in Austin. I had the wonderful opportunity performing alongside June’s Diary and many other incredible artists in 2019 and would absolutely do it again. Of course, there is also no place like home so when I was able to open for A$AP Rocky in Manila. That was extra special since I was able to perform in front of some of my closest friends and family.

Q) You’ve worked with a number of Grammy-award winning musicians so far. Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Apart from everyone I’ve mentioned earlier I would love the opportunity to write alongside Snoh Aalegra, Kehlani, Miguel and John Mayer. If there was anyone that I would love to hop on a track with it would be Masego, BJ the Chicago Kid, Lucky Daye and Tiana Major9!

Q) You’re super into fashion. What are some trends you’re digging at the moment?

A) I actually try and stay away from trends as much as possible and just wear whatever I feel most myself in! Trends are trends for a reason and I’m all about longevity. I do love streetwear and 90’s inspired fashion, so you will always see me in big graphic shirts or merchandise, baggy jeans, sweats and sneakers. Jordans, Air Forces or Balenciaga’s to be precise!

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) I think it’s really important to include your supporters in your journey and be as real as you can be! We live in a society where you have to look a certain way to be deemed beautiful, and I simply do not believe in that. I believe that everyone is unique and beautiful and that you don’t need to look like every other girl you see on TikTok or Instagram. I want my fans to know that you can make it without falling victim to societies standards and trends and I feel that people need a role model like that. It’s quite rare to find that in the present day.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) I’m eternally grateful for everyone’s support. As an independent artist it really is not easy at all, so any ounce of support does not go unnoticed! I also always like to remind everyone to never be afraid of being yourself, you are put on this earth to be unique. [smiles]
