WHAT? Capable: The Series

BY: Fiona Cauley and Nick Friend

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Fiona Cauley has muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic group of diseases that causes loss of muscle mass, to put it simply. As a young woman with a disability, she’s created a comedic series detailing the ups and downs of everyday life. With the witty tagline, “Looking good, walking weird,” Cauley pokes fun at herself right from the jump. Her comedic timing is incredible with her expressions and delivery making it easy to find the humor in the episodes.

Before the first official episode of the series Capable, Cauley answers the most common questions she has been asked, specifically about her disability. The questions are highly inappropriate, a complete invasion of privacy and all too believable. People in general don’t know how to act and their curiosities only seem to be heightened when in the presence of someone who’s living with a disability. It’s alarming that someone would ask flat out if she’s depressed or comment on her not looking disabled – as if there’s a certain look. The short Q&A is eye-opening and humorous and a great lead in to the actual first season of the series.

Each episode brings up new challenges, occasional annoyances and shines a light on the importance of perspective. From someone without a handicapped placard taking the last parking spot to a group of tipsy friends getting extremely awkward after whining about shallow things they wish to change about themselves, Capable covers issues big and small that able-bodied people never have to worry or even think about.

Capable is exactly the kind of series the world needs – diverse voices telling their own stories and educating the masses in a humorous way, all without ever coming off as too preachy (although there are times when preaching does seem necessary). The episodes are short and sweet, making the twelve available episodes easily bingeable. Plus, Cauley is extremely likable. I couldn’t get enough of her. Without her the show wouldn’t be nearly as successful as it is. I definitely recommend Capable: The Series for any and everyone. It’s a good one.
