WHAT? Demonologist For Hire

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

In a world where all things paranormal and supernatural are simply the norm, there’s only one person to call when the creatures who go bump in the night become a problem – The Demonologist (Bryn Owen). Filmed entirely in Scotland, Demonologist For Hire is a supernatural comedy web series that’s as entertaining as it is inventive.

Throughout the series’ three season run it’s racked up quite a few awards and nominations and it’s easy to see why. Production design, make-up, special effects, you name it – Demonologist For Hire shines in all the right places, painting a beautiful picture filled to the brim with suspense. Horror web series seem to be the hardest to nail, when falling back on things like cheap jump scares and sound cues are tempting. I never felt like Demonologist For Hire took the easy way out, relying on the strength of their story before anything else. One of the show’s most popular episodes, “Exorcism for Beginners,” really showcases the series as a whole. An homage to the infamous film The Exorcist, laced with comedy and just enough creepiness to make your skin crawl while you’re laughing.

It’s an extremely unique series through and through, putting a spin on the genre in a way you don’t see much. I’ve happily watched just about every supernatural television series of the past two decades and I feel like Demonologist For Hire falls right in line with some of the best.

There’s also bonus features on their channel, some great behind the scenes videos, kitschy “Ask the Demonologist” footage ripped straight from a so-called VHS tape and blooper reels for the first two seasons. With nine episodes currently available and an array of other things from the minds of the creators on their channel, you’ll find yourself losing track of time checking out all that Demonologist For Hire has to offer. And it’s worth it too.
