WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Dare to come inside the Dollhouse – a reality television style web series, full of drama, secrets and the reality behind the illusions social media creates. Outside of their highlight reels, the guys and gals of Dollhouse are much, much messier than they appear to be and aren’t nearly as good at hiding it when they’re face to face. Dollhouse has been featured in multiple festivals and has racked up a few awards, including “Best Web Series” at Top Shorts Film Festival for their second season.

As someone who spends more time on social media than she should, I love seeing series like this that remind you just how wrong our perceptions of people can be. Everyone tries to put their best face forward and sometimes it’s their fakest face. Creator and star Mariya Ranieli set out to reveal just how unreal everyone can be and did so in the most entertaining way possible.

There is the image obsessed Primrose (Carissa Casula), who may or may not have purchased her followers. We get to know the absolutely insane Ashleigh (Alicia Foreman). Both are in contrast with Natasha (Ranieli), who seems to be the only person that sees through everyone’s facades and never tries to be anyone other than herself. It’s an interesting dynamic and I’m glad there was at least one completely down to earth character included in the series.

The Season Two episode “Saint Ashleigh” was a highlight for me; the perfect amount of ridiculous mixed with some typical relationship drama. Primrose’s answer to Ashleigh borderline stalking Kevin (Brent Scott Davis) was to simply stalk her in return. Following her to hot yoga? Ambushing her at church? It’s the kind of craziness I expect from social media obsessed reality stars. Ashleigh being haunted by Daisy (Victoria Ippolito), who she attacked with a paperweight, and then immediately turning around and making an anti-bullying campaign was also a hilarious touch. Everything that works about this show is brought out in this episode.

Comedy fans will love the web series Dollhouse. If you’re interested in seeing the real day to day life of influencers and other online celebrities there’s a lot to love here. There are currently two seasons available and, while there are no plans for a third, the first two are more than worth the watch.
