WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

F#cking 40 is a comedy series following the lives of four close friends as they approach midlife, hoping to avoid the crisis. On its festival run the series racked up multiple awards, highlighting the writing, directing and the acting ensemble from a variety of film festivals. From the pilot episode, F#cking 40 just works. It does everything right and sucks you in before the title credits roll.

The men in the series are extremely out of touch, unaware of how incredibly old they are. They may think forty years old is the new thirty years old, but their thoughts and actions prove otherwise. Conner (Bill Caco) and Glenn (Jeff Pride) are among my favorites because I personally know guys exactly like them. Conner, a bartender, is desperately clinging to his youth while hooking up with twenty-something year old whose names he can’t remember. With Glenn, he is failing to connect with his son and his clients at work. Facebook is dead and the fact that Glenn makes an entire pitch based around it when attempting to appeal to the twelve to seventeen-year-old demographic proves forty isn’t the new thirty. It’s still just “F#cking 40.”

The writing is spot on, rooted in realism, but it’s the acting performances that really make this series shine. Caco and Pride specifically stand out, each bringing subtle yet organic elements to their characters. Individually they have the relatable everyman component that gives a series like this one the depth it needs to succeed. Caco’s way of clutching to outdated pop culture references (yes, The Spice Girls are old) and Pride’s hopelessness when it comes to bonding with his son make F#cking 40 what it is – a story about friends trying to deny the inevitable while becoming the exact thing they’re desperate to avoid.

For anyone approaching their middling years or fans of comedy in general, this series is for you. It’s equal parts amusing and truthful with the perfect touch of heart to lead you to root for these characters, even when they annoy you.
