WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

It’s Freezing Out There follows Pepper (played by creator Pepper Binkley) as she reaches a complicated crossroads in her life, both personally and career wise. In her mid-30’s, Pepper learns her opportunities for having children are slowly but surely winding down and she’s faced with a decision to make – have a baby ASAP or look into some alternative. She ultimately turns to cryopreservation, the freezing of her eggs, to buy herself some time as she tries to figure out what she wants for her future. From issues with her long-time fiancé Frankie (Frankie J. Alvarez) to passion for her creative intensive illustration career, none of it is easy.

Pepper’s journey throughout the experience is highly entertaining and fairly educational. Binkley pulled from personal experiences to bring some serious truth to the series, and Extended Fertility, the egg freezing company featured in the show, hosted a session for the production team to learn more about the process and everything surrounding it. They were huge difference makers for the show, elevating it from a simple series to something women can truly connect with.

The twelve-episode first season is engaging the whole way through, but really picks up about four episodes in when Pepper and Frankie are forced to have a raw conversation about what’s next for them. After being engaged for years he’s not sure he’s fully committed to marriage, let alone having a child, and their conflict leads to some of the best moments in the entire series. Binkley and Alvarez have a very easy and natural chemistry and they play off each other extremely well. You really believe that they’ve been together for years as they effortlessly bring subtle nuances to their scenes together that give off a sense of familiarity. Their squabble also leads Pepper to the possibility of having to do it alone.

This series is definitely a good one for mature women who may be struggling with this very issue themselves, but just about anyone should be able to find an aspect of Pepper’s plight to which they can relate. Binkley also included lots of fun elements to the series; the real artwork of artist Hallie Bateman who’s hands are the hands of the artist, among others, and all the music came from musicians the production team knew personally.
