WHAT? Scribbles

BY: Brandon Garegnani and Lynnsey Ooten

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Scribbles is an award-winning dark comedy for the mad artist in all of us. When Larz’s (Brandon Garegnani) only freelance job is on the line, he’s forced to motivate himself, shatter his creative block and produce something worthwhile if he wants to shake the title of struggling artist. After disappointing his boss with a cookie cutter illustration, he’s given one weekend to bring the only fairy born without wings to life. Thus, Scribbles (Jeane Reveendran) is born. Literally.

His sketch of Scribbles comes to life, complete with yellow rain boots, and wastes no time terrorizing him. You can practically feel Larz unraveling through the screen, Garegnani’s portrayal is scarily good, both entertaining and unhinged, as he tries to make sense of what’s happening around him. The chemistry between Garegnani and Reveendran is off the charts, too. The series really took off during their first scene and only got better as the episodes went on. They play off each other effortlessly. It’s exciting and electric, reminiscent of a classic buddy cop movie you can’t help but love.

Not only is the story wild, but it’s visually amazing as well; the series is beautifully shot and edited. The redundancy of Larz’s days leading up to his deadline, ordering the same thing from the coffee shop and crumbling up another failed drawing attempt was enough to make me imagine the mental drain myself. His life going from dull and gray to being filled with vibrant color the second Scribbles entered it was another nice touch.

All four episodes of the series are available to watch now and I suggest taking the time to binge them all in one sitting. You won’t regret it. It’s absolutely ridiculous one second and then hits you right where it hurts the next. For anyone who’s wrestled with their own inner thoughts and demons and has been disappointed in themselves creatively, you’ll understand Larz’s plight completely and love every second of it.

WHERE CAN I WATCH? Episodes are available on the series’ website.
