WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

I just knew I was going into a series I’d end up loving with taglines like “Beers. Queers. Slo Pitch.” and “Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Will Lose.” Team sports plus quick wit is a recipe for success in my book, so I had high hopes and I wasn’t disappointed. Slo Pitch is a comedy mockumentary style show about a group of underdogs vying for beer league softball glory. Led by their arguably too devoted coach Joanne (Kirsten Rassmusen), The Brovaries look more like The Bad News Bears than a functioning ball team and they certainly have their work cut out for them if they want their championship.

There are so many little things about the series that I loved from the Hot Sauce Player of the Game awarded to Joanne’s homemade sauce to their rival being named The Blue Gays to former professional player Mel (Amanda Cordner) frustratingly saying “umpires, man.” It has everything you’d want from a series – lots of laughs, all kinds of diversity, a little bit of scandal, tons of fun and baseball. With the lack of amateur leagues this summer and a shortened MLB season, Slo Pitch is the perfect supplement for sports fans and anyone who needs a bit more humor in their life right now.

As an avid baseball fan, a show about a beer league was already right up my alley. But what sets this series apart from every other sports related show is how truly representative and diverse it is, both on and off screen. Slo Pitch features a fully female and/or non-binary led creative team, a key cast that is fifty percent BIPOC, seventy percent of the cast and crew identifying as female or non-binary and eighty percent of key cast identifying as LGBTQ+. Finding a series more inclusive than this would be a serious challenge. It was amazing as a female POC to be able to watch a series with such a blended cast and crew and truly relate to the characters. I am definitely a Joanne, taking a casual beer league entirely too seriously and found myself wanting to tryout to be on The Brovaries myself.

Slo Pitch is currently available on OUTtv in Canada, Australia, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand and the UK and will be available on KINDAtv on August 3rd in all other territories. If you’re a sports fan or someone simply longing for a beautifully shot series that’s genuinely diverse, look no further. Slo Pitch has it all.
