WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Sweet & Power is a new web series that follows the lives of four Asian-American women as they attempt to navigate their way through their twenties. Carolyn Yuen Marino is the creator, writer and director of Sweet & Power. She also stars as the series’ lead Cici Yuen. She’s joined by Yeji Kim Sakoda, Becca Cheung and NoyNoy Inthaphanya to round out a wonderfully diverse and accurate cast.

The show starts off incredibly strong with the first episode “Proof” setting the tone for the entire series. Through food, with the use of a very creative dough metaphor, Cici slowly realizes the sacrifices that were made by her mother to give her a better life. It takes one of her students’ attempts at poetry and a personal desire to tap into her Chinese roots for her to open her eyes, but once she does she sees her mother in a whole new light. Sweet & Power as a whole gives an honest look at the world through the lens of Asian-Americans who are children of first and second generation immigrants. It’s refreshing to see these stories, as they’re sorely lacking in the entertainment world right now (we see you Crazy Rich Asians) and it’s especially enjoyable to see it played out with an all female cast.

Each available episode is about ten minutes long and is accompanied by a Q & A segment with the cast and creators, cleverly named “Short & Sweet.” I love when web series include any type of behind the scenes content to go with the show. They’re always insightful and you get to see the love and dedication that’s put into their work. It’s no different here and if I didn’t already find Carolyn and the gang likable after watching the series, I certainly would’ve after checking out “Short & Sweet.”

Sweet & Power is a true hidden gem, a passion project from a small team still working on putting together future episodes. For anyone who longs for more Asian-American representation in media, loves a good dramedy about messy millennials or is simply looking for a brand new show with lots of potential I suggest giving this web series a view. You won’t regret it.
