WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

The Drive-Thru Therapist is a brand-new web series about seeking therapy in a very uncommon, yet ingenious format. The series follows a variety of patients who look to improve their mental health with shorter drive-thru sessions as opposed to the typical office visit. Dr. Sylvia Morris (Ali Bill) sets out to make therapy cool; with less need for a long-term commitment and an easier process. Clients can pull to the window as needed and get the help they might not have gotten otherwise.

There are six episodes in the series with each episode focusing on one of Dr. Sylvia’s new clients. Different topics are covered through these vastly different characters. And if the clever drive-thru idea wasn’t enough to set this series apart, the inclusion of post-episode commentary does the job. Each episode is set to feature special commentary from Hilary Jacobs Hendel, a licensed mental health expert, on how the character’s situations may play out in a real-world therapy setting. Based on the topics brought up in the episodes, Hendel will also offer specific tips to help with the character’s issues.

All too often shows with a focus on therapy only make light of the situation, but The Drive-Thru Therapist brings awareness and opens up conversations about mental health while also being entertaining. From the trailer alone they seem to have captured the balance of reality and humor. It’s also beautifully shot, with the charm of an indie film and the warmth of comforting home movies.

The show’s trailer dropped last week and full-length episodes are coming soon. If you’re interested in normalizing the need for therapy and combating the stigma of mental health, The Drive-Thru Therapist will appeal to you.
