WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

The First Watch recently released a brand new season of their Dungeons and Dragons based web series. The second season, The First Watch: Wasteland, follows the party on a campaign starting off with the group stranded in a vast deserted city. Across dry scorched earth Sikya (Melissa Coons), Hide of Beast (Benji Perez Gonzalez) and G’Morg (Joe Frank) travel on another mystery-filled adventure and take viewers along for the ride. With The Dungeon Master (Andrew Coons) guiding them, who knows what’s in store.

I was never someone who could really get into watching video game streams or things of that nature, but when it comes to table-top gaming, I couldn’t get enough of it. The First Watch felt like I was simultaneously watching a group of gamers and creative writers bring a new world to life. It was incredibly easy to get lost in the story, despite my minimal knowledge on D&D going into it. The visuals spliced with the actual gameplay made picturing the action a breeze, and at times it’s like I was on the journey with them. It’s just genuinely entertaining and the long episodes served the story well. I was on the edge of my seat when they made the decision to split up and found myself wanting to make moves of my own as I got deeper into the season, especially if it involved checking for traps or holding onto something that could come in handy later.

Andrew and Benji set out to combine their filmmaking and storytelling skills with their geekiness to create something new and exciting and I definitely think they succeeded. As someone who’s dabbled in the Dungeons and Dragons world but was never really well-versed enough to play regularly, checking out all the different content on The First Watch’s channel has me wanting to get into it.

If you’re interested in tabletop gaming or you’re a big fan of the fantasy and adventure genres, you have to check out The First Watch. Their channel is full of one-shots and multiple seasons of the show and they even have a podcast. The First Watch: Wasteland was a joy to watch and I’m ready to grab my own dice set to prepare for next week’s episode.
