WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Founder of Yroc Sonex Productions Cory Xenos prides herself on creating diverse and inclusive content that makes viewers feel seen and heard. The Fortnight, a brand-new LGBT web series, is a great example of everything the company stands for. While network television slowly but surely are starting to integrate positive representation, I haven’t seen anything put it right in the forefront quite like this or handle the complexities that come with it.

When Peyton (Alexandra Swarens) is suffering from a serious case of writer’s block, she decides to spend fourteen days in a cabin away from it all. Unfortunately, the cabin is double booked and she’s forced to share her quarters. Not with just anyone though, the other guest is her ex-girlfriend Luca (Rachel Rogers), who broke her heart ten years ago. Their first meeting is raw and you can feel the tension almost immediately. While it could’ve easily been played for laughs, The Fortnight takes the realistic route and it’s so clearly rooted in truth. The gaze they share says everything, as they don’t verbally say much of anything at all. I was already on board with the series, but that moment just put it over the top for me. I knew I’d found something special.

The Fortnight is candid and full of subtle nuances that make it feel natural. In the pilot episode Peyton finds out who she’ll be staying with, keys in hand, and accidentally sets off her car’s alarm. Such a small detail, but it grounded things from the start. It’s the little things throughout the series that set it apart. I also loved the use of flashbacks to show little snippets of Peyton and Luca’s relationship all those years ago. The effect makes you feel for both women, as it’s obvious the flashbacks are memories coming back to them. Ones even they may have forgotten.

This series is absolutely worth the watch; there are sixteen episodes and each one is better than the last. The Fortnight is exactly the kind of LGBT web series the world needs, full of heart and drama and everything in between. Behind the scenes and blooper reels are also available on the Yroc Sonex Productions’ Youtube channel and the inside look into the series is definitely worth checking out, too.
