WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

The North Pole is a smart, topical comedy following the lives of Nina (Reyna Amaya), Benny (Santiago Rosas), Marcus (Donte Clark) and Finn (Eli Marienthal) as they try to improve their beloved city of Oakland. Season Two of the thought-provoking series dropped this week, bringing the total episode count to fourteen. I took the time to catch up on the first season before diving into the second and I didn’t regret it. So, I definitely recommend checking out the first seven episodes first.

Tensions reached new heights in the Season One finale with a dangerous police confrontation ending in Benny’s arrest and the newest season opens with him facing deportation. Guest star and executive producer Rosario Dawson shines an interesting light on one of the country’s most pressing issues with lines like, “If you ask me undocumented folks have more documents than anyone,” and the way she passionately instructs Benny how to make the best case for himself. It leads to a very creative political campaign when he decides to run for office as there’s no better way to get your face out there.

The starring cast is what really makes The North Pole special. Highlighting everything from immigration to social media, racism to fashion and much more the series touches base on literally everything that’s happening in the world today. However, it’s made even better by the likable characters brilliantly brought to life by Amaya, Rosas, Clark and Marienthal. The chemistry is through the roof and I really feel like the four of them are roommates, supporting and loving each other, while getting caught up in occasionally petty arguments. Amaya especially is a standout. Nina’s dedication to radical activism and willingness to lead is amazing. Nina is like MLK if he was on WorldStarHipHop, which is exactly the kind of thing younger generations need for motivation.

I don’t want to give too much away because this is something people should see for themselves. If you’re interested in politics in any way or interested in seeing different viewpoints, this is the perfect web series for you. It’s just the right mix of comedic and relevant and it’s a surefire hit.
