WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
To Be Me is a dramatic web series about gender identity, embracing who you are and the importance of community support. Jordan, played wonderfully by trans female non-binary actress Kate Rose Wilburn, comes home from college in hopes of being open to their father (Emmy award winner Kim Estes) about who they truly are.
The series follows Jordan throughout their journey, struggling with the confines of being limited to the two so-called traditional genders, being honest with their conservative father and all the trials and tribulations that come with being a young African American in a religious midwestern town. From the opening of the first episode, To Be Me grabs your attention. When a young Jordan is caught by their father dressed up in their mother’s clothes, it’s hard not to have a visceral reaction. Each episode is rooted in truth and you really end up feeling for these characters, especially Jordan.
One scene stood out to me the most and was a true highlight. In the series’ third episode Jordan and his friend Kouri (transgender activist Corey Rae) have an extremely raw conversation about gender, how they feel in their bodies and how that relates to their happiness. It leads to an important dialogue between friends like I’ve never seen before. The refreshing openness between the two, the discussion about what’s real, what’s simply a social construct and the personal choices we as people make, was such a key message to get out.
Another perfect pick for Pride Month, To Be Me is an important story brought to life by a variety of different LGBTQ artists and creators. Fans of quality representation will love this series and anyone who’s currently struggling with their identity, no matter what it may be, will find comfort in Jordan’s story.
