WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Unicorn Included is a comedy web series about a new kind of odd couple. Jonathan (Jonathan Fournier), a disabled man and brand-new homeowner, finds himself stuck with an unexpected roommate he can’t seem to get rid of. Unicorn (Stefanie Buxton, Corey Tomicic) came with the condo and they’re lazy, sarcastic and refuse to leave. Somehow Unicorn manages to be both Jonathan’s best friend and absolute worst enemy, causing problems and encouraging Jonathan’s worst habits. It’s definitely not all glitter and rainbows. The infamous mythological creature does exist, but apparently unicorns make terrible roommates.

For me, the standout episode was the third “The ‘You Have Your Side, I Have My Side’ Thing.” In a classic sitcom move, Unicorn puts a line of tape down the center of the condo and they’re each only allowed to stick to their side. Naturally, they end up doing things simply to annoy one another and by the end one of them is banging on pots and pans while the other is purposely making the place smell horrible. It’s the exact kind of quirky zaniness I’d want from a show about a unicorn.

Unicorn Included is a great example of why I enjoy web shows so much. This series is something completely unique and original, unlike anything anyone else is doing right now. There’s also a serious lack of representation of disabled actors and creators in the entertainment industry, so it’s great to see a disabled man as the lead. Not to mention the only human character in the series.

The series was nominated for two awards at Seoul Webfest earlier this year, including Best Sketch Comedy and Best Creator for Fournier and I can see why. Unicorn Included takes a simple plot, two polar opposite roommates, and turns it on its head by throwing something fresh into the mix. If you’re looking for something different and want to support a small up and coming show, give Unicorn Included a watch. There are currently four episodes available to stream and hopefully more coming soon.
