The familiar face of Father Juan Carlos (Shaun Johnson) pops up in an establishing flashback to Purgatory in 1887 as he dictates the tale of a serpent to a young woman named Maeve (Sydney John). Robert Svane (Michael Eklund) enters the church to notify Juan Carlos of Wyatt Earp’s impending arrival and the timeliness of his presence on the night of the Blood Eclipse. The Good Father then tells Maeve to take the book of his transcribed tales home for safe keeping and she obeys without question. The two men, left alone, embark on a mission to deliver Peacemaker to The Champion. Present day Robert Svane, now Bobo Del Ray, is a lot less lucid these days. Trapped within a plexi-glass cell he teases Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) about complete absence of hope shared between them. The two heirs of hell’s enduring cruelty – they have nothing left but each other. Bobo and Wynonna are quickly joined by Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Jeremy (Varun Saranga), but Wynonna is not mentally equipped for research. Coffee in hand, the heir leaves Purgatory’s biggest brains to their own devices.

Deep in the heart of Purgatory, a mysterious explosion signals the arrival of yet another magical vagabond – a Hazmat Suit wearing woman named Kevin (Anna Silk). Kevin is looking for The Chosen One. Her search will inevitably take her directly to Wynonna Earp’s front porch, but Wynonna has an itch to scratch before she can entertain any guests. Wynonna stumbles upon Charlie (Sebastian Pigott). He tries to entice her with innuendo, but Wynonna goes in for the hug. Charlie’s surprised, but his affinity for Wynonna allows him to melt right back into her. Strong and stable, even if it’s just for a little while. Their embrace ends and they sit down for a quick beer and a chat on the fate of their town. Shuffling outside pulls the two out from their lair, where they encounter Kevin. Wynonna’s hospitality leaves much to be desired, but it’s nothing that a quick throat chop can’t cure. Kevin doesn’t have time for manners – she’s got an entire world to save.

Bobo is held as a captive audience to Jeremy’s sudden bout of body confidence, watching in resignation as his angel and her small companion try to find a way to combat Bulshar and his reign of terror. They decide to take it from the top in attempt to demystify the demon’s grand plan. Their recap leads them down several roads, from The Bible to the Tree of Knowledge. Their incessant rambling ignites a fire within Bobo, forcing him to rattle off fragments of a clue. “He took her book,” he explains – referring back to the book Maeve acquired for safe keeping. Waverly manages to pry more information out of Bobo and he tells her to ask Doc about a witch named Maeve and Juan Carlos. This is all the information he gives before his sanity slips away. Nicole (Katherine Barrell) bears witness to the dissolution of Bobo’s coherence and Waverly asks her to find Doc and ask him about the Maeve and her mysterious book.

Nicole finds Doc (Tim Rozon) just as he guzzles a blood bag. He tells her that Kate left him alone to fend her for himself, but assures Nicole that despite this setback he is committed to protecting Wynonna. Nicole takes the information on board and immediately gets down to business presenting Doc with a photograph of Maeve. He identifies her as Maeve Perley, kin to Mattie and Gretta. They agree to embark on a mission to learn more about Maeve and her book, but not without first taking proper precautions. Doc is concerned about his bloodlust, but Nicole has it covered. She’s armed with wooden bullets and a sliver of misplaced trust in the old gunslinger.

Kevin describes her role in overseeing the balance of the world to Charlie and Wynonna. Kevin criticizes Wynonna’s training, attire and lack of weaponry before telling Wynonna that she knows about a weapon formidable enough to damage Bulshar himself. Kevin tells Wynonna that the weapon will come at a cost – and thoroughly emphasizes the importance of choice, freewill and sensible clothing. Wynonna pulls Charlie aside for a brief discussion on Kevin’s information. He is skeptical, but Wynonna is desperate. Their conflicting approaches exposes other underlying issues between them. Charlie’s growing adoration for Wynonna translates into neediness and an emotional mountain that Wynonna is not equipped to climb – and he leaves in a huff. Waverly is blessed enough to meet Kevin while Wynonna is still outside. Kevin helps herself to some pickles until Wynonna returns to fill Waverly in on the weapon, a magical arm.

Kevin explains that while she cannot directly interfere in these matters, she can inform the players. The extent of her power lies within what other choose to do with the information she supplies them. The magical arm, she explains, can only be retrieved by The Champion. From the arm, a true weapon can be synthesized. The sisters agree to give it a chance. Their search takes them down to the mines where Widow Mercedes chopped Bulshar’s arm off. A radioactive Revenant has Frankenstein’d himself up with the arm. He emerges from the mine with a wail. They fight him the best they can without Peacemaker, but Wynonna falls unconscious after coming into contact with his radiation. Waverly rouses her awake and they flee to the Gardner House.

Doc and Nicole discuss Maeve’s past as a magical midwife who was condemned and attacked right around the time Wyatt shot Sheriff Clootie. Maeve, who was burned at the stake may have died in body, but not in spirit. As they enter the home formerly known as Gretta’s, Doc starts a fire to keep them warm during their search. The fire summons the spirit of Maeve, who recognizes Doc as Wyatt’s boyfriend – a hot take. Maeve laments her fate, trapped in fire forever, and takes advantage of Nicole’s warm body by possessing her. Maeve, inside of Nicole, tells Doc that she needs a fresh body to move into. She entices the undead Doc with Nicole’s blood, but he refuses. Maeve can only permanently live in a body of a dead host and Doc refuses to kill Nicole.

Jeremy and Robin (Justin Kelly) make some time for romance and share fries while on Bobo babysitting duty. Doc calls Jeremy to fill him in on Nicole’s recent possession and their Little Gay Dinner is cut short. Jeremy leaves Robin to bond with Bobo over jazz music and the occasional beauty of human’s creation. Maeve promptly attempts to body jump into Jeremy, but she can’t stay inside of him for too long as she can only inhabit those who are purely human. She jumps back into Nicole and coughs up a page of her missing journal – just to keep them playing her game. In her haste to claim Nicole’s body, Maeve reveals the location of the journal. Doc retrieves it, but Maeve pulls Nicole’s gun on him… and then on Nicole herself. Frustrated, Maeve leaves Nicole’s body and returns to the flames, which she then uses to engulf the entire home in hopes of incinerating the others.

Charlie responds to the fire call at the Perley residence. Charlie and his team enter the home, full of black smoke and flames. Charlie finds Doc first and pulls him from the flame. Doc, weak and ravenous, strikes Charlie’s jugular. In the blink of an eye Charlie is dead. Nicole is saved next and has no time to recover before discovering Doc’s crime. She knows that Doc is responsible for Charlie’s death, but she feels responsible for letting it happen. As the only member of their team still willing to work by Doc’s side, she failed to protect those around him. Nicole draws her gun on Doc and promises to kill him if she ever sees him again. Doc acknowledges her promise and walks away, a wry smile on his immortal face.

Waverly and Wynonna reach Mercedes’ home and find her face flawless and fancy free. She invites them in while they prepare to face the radioactive revenant. Mercedes (Dani Kind) explains her “face lift” to the sisters as the revenant pushes his way into her home. He throws Wynonna across the room and Waverly ungloves her ringed hand. They battle on and off and Waverly begs the ring to activate. It listens by allowing her to puppeteer the revenant. She makes him choke himself out and they remove the arm from his slumped body. Kevin arrives and breaks the news that Bulshar’s arm isn’t the weapon, Waverly is. The youngest Earp and her ring are The Champion.

Meanwhile, back at BBD we see Jeremy, Robin and Nicole comb through Juan Carlos’s journal. Inside it is revealed that Bulshar’s first form was created to enjoy the spoils of Paradise. Bulshar, before he was Sheriff Clootie, slithered through the Garden as a serpent. The serpent. Juan Carlos and Julian failed to keep the serpent entrapped and had worked through their lives to capture him once again. Robin, with his astronomy knowledge, recognizes the rare Blood Eclipse and mentions that another Blood Eclipse will occur the following day. Bobo, from inside his cell, tells them to get ready.

Kevin tells Waverly that Bulshar stole the ring from her father, who was one of two angels protecting the Garden of Eden. Waverly takes a shot to digest the information while Wynonna makes the same connection confirmed by her friends back at HQ – Bulshar is the serpent. Kevin verifies this information even furthe, and continues on to commend Waverly for proving herself worthy. Waverly’s place on the throne is one of righteousness, but it doesn’t come free. After some probing, Kevin tells the sisters that in order for Waverly to save the world – she must turn to stone. One life for the good of many. One life Wynonna isn’t willing to lost, no matter what. Kevin reminds Wynonna that it’s not her choice – it’s Waverly’s. And Waverly isn’t sure.

The Earp’s trepidation to sacrifice any more than they already have frustrates Kevin and she leaves them. Her job is done. It’s up to them to make their choices. The Earps have never been given a choice when it comes to their heritage, their fates, their gifts or their curses…and they’ll be damned if they allow destiny to take any more from them. The only decision they’re making today is to be together – for tomorrow may never come. All throughout Purgatory, strange things are happening. The sun shines bright at 9pm, the fire witch is gone. Doc made a choice to kill an innocent and something has kidnapped Mercedes Gardner. Time is running out.
