The episode follows Holt (Andre Braugher) at the precinct giving everyone the good news about he and Kevin (Marc Evan Jackson). He wants to celebrate it by having a vow renewal since the first time they got married was a little rushed because they didn´t know how long gay marriage was going to be legal for. They are pulling all the stops for the event; however, he also has some shocking news – he´s retiring. Everyone is surprised, from Terry (Terry Crews) and Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) who say “What?” to Jakes (Andy Samberg) asking why he led with the salad forks instead of that. Holt wants to show Kevin that he´s committing to him a 100% this time, which is why he´s stepping down. Jake is disappointed that they haven´t even done a last case together. This news will affect Amy (Melissa Fumero) even more so they make sure she´s not there for it so she can be focused on the police reform proposal. They will tell her after it´s been finished.

The gang arrive early to help Kevin with preparations. Jake finds Holt currently working in a tent. Apparently the reform is being second guessed because they think Amy messed with the numbers, but it turns out it was O´Sullivan (John C. McGinley). Jake already has a plan working and let´s everyone in. Terry will meet with O’Sullivan to trick him with something Billy Joel related while he and Captain Holt go undercover to his house looking for his laptop. Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz), Charles and Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) will keep an eye on Kevin and look after Cheddar. Holt and Jake go to O´Sullivan undercover as gas company employees while Terry and Amy are getting ready to meet with him to get his fingerprint so they can access his laptop. Terry accidentally tells her that Captain Holt is retiring which leaves her absolutely frozen.

At O´Sullivan’s house Jake and Holt are received by his mom Carol (K Callan). They try to get into the basement but it gets a little complicated so Holt has to use his charm. Terry meets Frank and gets paid for the Billy Joel memorabilia which is not what they wanted because they need his print from the paper he just took. Jake is able to get O´Sullivan´s laptop, but he and Holt are caught by Carol and get locked up in the basement. At the venue Rosa and Charles are keeping an eye on Kevin but Cheddar is making it difficult. Terry manages to get the paper back from O´Sullivan while giving a speech that ends up helping Amy as well.

Holt and Jake are still trapped in the basement, which gives them time to have a meaningful conversation about marriage and compromising. They are saved by Kevin and Rosa dressed as cops. Holt tells him that he´s retiring but that´s not what Kevin wants. They renew their vows and Raymond decides not to retire just yet. Two weeks later the Commissioner approved their police reform program and will be implementing it city wide. He promotes Amy to Chief which follows with one of her dork dances. At Jake and Amy´s home they talk things through and will figure out the logistics of her new job.
