Q) Your song “The Light” is out now. What was it like in the studio recording it?

Mikako: I wanted to sing ’The Light’ to a specific person so I think of my sister when I sing it. When the demo of this song came up, my sister was worried and the words I said to my sister were all lyrics of this song.

So, I got a good take when I sang like I was talking to my sister and thinking of her. I didn’t tell her anything about it, but then my sister told me that it was her FAKY’s favorite song. I thought that my feelings reached the person who I wanted to convey my feelings most through music, and my number of favorite songs have increased again!

Taki: Recording this song was I would say really fun. To be honest, “‘The Light” is my favorite. The complicated part I would say would be the timing. I had a hard time to get the timing write because my whole body was full of excitement.

Q) “The Light” is so inspirational! What do you hope listeners take away from this song?

Akina: I hope that our listeners can take away feeling positive from hearing this song. The tune itself is uplifting and catchy, but the lyrics are really what motivates me so I hope it will do the same to our listeners!

Q) Are any of you involved in the songwriting process at all? If so, how much of a hand do you have with the English lyrics?

Lil’ Fang: The song is often written by me and Akina. Sometimes it’s simply in English with a melody and atmosphere of words and sometimes it’s in English because I think it will be easier for us to share the feelings we want to convey.

Q) How is your Japanese heritage reflected into the music you make?

Akina: I both do and don’t consider our Japanese heritage to be a reflection to the music we make. We don’t purposely try to make anything sound “Japanese” and what we create is authentic to the lifestyle we live. We mix Japanese and English lyrics because that is what we feel most comfortable with. So, yes, our Japanese heritage is a key part of our music but it isn’t necessarily something that we set a goal to achieve with each song we make.

Lil’ Fang: When writing lyrics, I am very conscious of word endings and conjunctions. I think it is a beautiful thing that is peculiar to Japanese language where the emotion changes so much with just the last letter.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

Mikako: My dream is to stand in the dome with FAKY. It’s been eight years since FAKY was established and I definitely want to stand on this stage as one of the dreams I’ve been saying since the first year!

Akina: It is so difficult to pick a favorite place to perform because each place is so special! Although we are unable to travel during this time, I have some of the best memories from being and performing abroad with the girls. I will never forget looking into the crowd and seeing our international, non-Japanese speaking fans singing our lyrics back to us perfectly. Those moments are when I feel so proud that I continued down this path.

Q) We know this industry does not give female musicians that much freedom. What is some advice you would give to upcoming female artists?

Taki: My own little advice actually for female artists is for every single girl. It is to just not care. Do what you want, do what you love, be thankful and grateful and the rest they can just watch you succeed. In the line of work if you care too much about the people around you, they will eat you alive. Just be strong and don’t lose your own voice.

Lil’ Fang: I would like you to focus on what you can do and what you can convey because you are a woman, rather than the inconvenience of being a woman.

I think it is important to live a life that makes you proud of being a woman.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

Akina: I would love to collaborate with a rapper! I think FAKY has pushed a lot of boundaries and I would love to challenge ourselves with a trap rap track!

Lil’ Fang: This is Twenty One Pilots. I’m a big fan of their music and it’s a completely different genre from FAKY. So, I’d love to collaborate with them.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

Taki: Right now, to be honest, I have been in a TikTok song mood. I watch a lot so the songs ends up being in my head all the time. Not one in particular.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your music?

Taki: For everyone who supports us and especially our music, we would like to thank you and give you a virtual hug. We have a lot of things planned for this year and we hope you all are looking forward for it. We try our best to always give you something different and we hope that we are able to send the message for you all stay safe and healthy. We will see you soon.

Akina: Thank you for everything that you have done for us. Your power, support and love is definitely something we feel even though we can’t be there with you. I’m so excited to share more music and projects with you all this year, so make sure to look out for that too! Again, thank you for your love and let’s keep rising! There’s nothing we can’t do if we do it together! Everyone take care and be safe xx
