Q) Please tell us the premise for the series “Nemesis.”
A) “Nemesis” is a high stakes crime drama that blurs the lines between good and bad while following our two leads – one cop and one criminal – and everyone in their respective worlds. As viewers watch, they will soon discover through all the twists and turns that there are more characters than just our two leads who are dealing with conflict – there is a “Nemesis” for everyone, including Candace.
Q) What was it about your role as Dr. Candace Stiles that drew you to be a part of the show?
A) Who wouldn’t want an opportunity to work with Courtney A. Kemp, especially on the first show out the gate with her overall deal at Netflix! Plus, it was a fun way to continue my own relationship with Netflix and build upon the varied body of work that I have already been blessed with on the platform since “Nemesis” is a much different series than “The Upshaws” and “Luke Cage.”
Q) The series was created by two talented female writers. What did this mean to you to be a part of a female helmed program?
A) I’m all for “girl power” and “boss lady” vibes and love to see women in positions of power in any and all industries, so watching Courtney Kemp command the set and get the respect she deserves was a joy to watch.
Q) There are some incredible costars you have in this show. Who were you excited to share a scene with?
A) As a childhood fan of “A Different World,” having Dawnn Lewis play my mom was a special treat! And as a fan of arguably one of the best series of all time, “The Wire,” reuniting with my former “Rosewood” co-star Domenick Lombardozzi and playing alongside Michael Potts were both a pretty cool and nostalgic experience.
Q) Candace’s parents never really warmed up to Isaiah. Is it the fact that he is likely never to be home to be a supportive partner or the fact his job is so dangerous?
A) I would say it’s a combination of both. Both elements create a since of insecurity and instability in the Stiles home, so her parents’ fear of Isaiah (Matthew Law) negatively affects not only their daughters but also their grandsons wellbeing and is a constant source of tension that’s not easy to overlook with a son-in-law as hotheaded and absent as Isaiah. They simply think she can do better.
Q) Your on-screen son, Noah, is also at risk. What kind of impact does Isaiah’s determination and pursuit of Wiler have on his family?
A) His laser focus on Coltrane (Y’lan Noel) causes him to lose sight of his family and witnessing a marriage already falling apart at such a young, impressionable age teaches him that anytime he takes his eyes off the ball as the man of the house, he exposes his family to outside influences and dangers that might not exist if he were able to properly balance his work and home life.
Q) “Nemesis” is action packed. Did you have to do any stunt training to be ready to film?
No, I didn’t have the heavy load our cops and robbers had and the little action I was able to get in on. My dance background and previous stunt training proved to be useful.
Q) The iconic Mario Van Peebles is an EP on this and directed two episodes. What was it like working with the actor turned director?
A) Such a pleasure! I too hope to direct one day and do more producing so anytime I get to work with multi-hyphenates, especially with the pedigree of MVP, it’s like a front row seat to the magic in that creative space.
Q) The show is action packed and very heartfelt/emotional, so I’m eager to hear what were some of your personal favorite scenes to film?
A) Maybe the Thanksgiving family dinner. It was a very long scene to film, so it was great watching MVP orchestrate the days, and it allowed plenty of opportunities to get to know some of the cast in between takes. Lots of laughs.
Q) What do you think it is about “Nemesis” that will captivate audiences?
A) The show is action filled and very sexy with lots of twist and turns to keep audiences engaged and guessing. Audiences get to look at a beautifully shot show AND yell at their screens!
Q) What are some of the other projects that you have been busy working on lately?
A) To be honest, with the current state of our industry, things have been eerily slower than usual so nothing new outside of “Nemesis” that I can actually speak on at the moment, but other current projects and fan favorites, out now are the Old Spice commercials I do alongside Deon Cole and the final season of Netflix’s “The Upshaws,” alongside Mike Epps, Wanda Sykes and Kim Fields.
Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of you and the wonderful work you continue to do on our screens?
A) Simply, THANK YOU! They are constantly supporting everything I do, rooting for me and waiting to see me in anything with my name attached. It always means the world to me when I read those comments or get approached with such love and support.
