Ghosts – The Heir

After penning a book “ghost-authored” by Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), Sam (Rose McIver) comes into the lounge with a gift for Old Higgentoot: a scented candle. The candle is a gift purchased with the $20,000 advance Sam was given for Isaac’s story. Once the ghosts hear the amount Sam was offered, Isaac immediately demands half of the proceeds for his story. Nigel (John Hartman) backs him, along with his fellow ghosts. While Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) still wonders how a ghost can take half of an advance and won’t be able to spend it, Sam agrees to Isaac’s terms.

While Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) is still being ignored by Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) for her actions from the prior episode, a new problem arrives to Woodstone. A young woman named Kelsey Miller (Jessie Ennis) arrives and informs Sam that her mother slept with David Woodstone (Brian Cook), Sam’s uncle. Because of this information, it would make her a closer relative than Sam and the proper heir to the mansion. Sam and Jay immediately consult their lawyer Dan Herbst (P.J. Byrne) and he arranges for a DNA test.

With Alberta and Hetty’s friendship clearly in jeopardy, the ghosts decide to hold ghost court to determine what to do. Hetty is eager to prove that she is a changed woman since getting to know Alberta, Flower (Sheila Carrasco), and her beloved dalliance with the old washing machine.  Although Hetty’s argument is touching, Alberta still believes that punishment is in order and asks the jury of her peers to determine the proper course of action.

As Isaac decides what to do with his money, he asks Sasappis (Román Zaragoza), Flower, Nigel and Nancy (Betsy Sodaro) to help him out. Ultimately, Isaac tells them how he wants to splurge on a new daybed from Pottery Barn. This news upsets Nigel, as the daybed will only accommodate Isaac and does not factor him into the equation.

When the DNA results come in, Sam, Jay, Kelsey, and lawyer Dan sit down to discuss the results. As expected, Dan says that Kelsey is a match and the rightful heir to Woodstone. Eventually Kelsey and Dan offer to settle financially on the matter, but when Trevor (Asher Grodman) hears about Kelsey’s conception at the nightclub Scores….he is confused since David was banned from the club. Learning this information, Sam and Jay head to the nightclub where David’s ghost is stuck. They need answers.

Not sure how to proceed with Nigel, Isaac turns to Trevor and Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) to figure out what to do. Thorfinn and Trevor were both in new relationships and explain to Isaac how Nigel is upset that he doesn’t factor into Isaac’s decisions. Hearing out his friends, Isaac decides to talk to Nigel and explains that he doesn’t feel comfortable having Nigel move in with him in their current situation. Isaac changes this by proposing to Nigel, which he gladly accepts and suggests that maybe they get a king-sized bed to share.

While Jay samples the strip club sushi as a ghost urges against that decision, Sam sits down with David and explains the current situation. David asks when Kelsey was born and explains that her birth in 1997 could not have happened since he has been shooting blanks since 1993, due to a dumb stunt he pulled. This leaves Sam and Jay with new information to potentially keep their home.

The ghost jury reconvenes and asks Alberta if she is sure of her decision. With Alberta adamant that Hetty is punished, Pete (Richie Moriarty) informs Hetty that she will be banished to the woods for a year….quickly interrupted by the news of Isaac and Nigel’s engagement. Hetty wishes to celebrate with the group but is grabbed by Thorfinn to be escorted out of the house.  Alberta asks if they can still go on their walks and Pete explains that banishment means Hetty will be alone. Unfortunately for Trevor, this also means no more trysts. At the last moment, Alberta decides to forgive Hetty and comes up with a punishment of her own: Hetty must give up her room to Alberta and room with Flower. Hetty agrees so that they can begin to repair their relationship, even though Flower’s eagerness to be roommates leaves Hetty on edge.

Utilizing the information they received from David Woodstone, Sam and Jay meet with Kelsey and Dan. Informing them that David has been sterile since the early 90’s, a second DNA test is requested with a vendor that Sam and Jay choose. This breaks Kelsey and she admits that she was paid by Dan to pretend to be the heir of Woodstone. Dan explains that with his mounting gambling debts and a hotel chain wanting the property, he hatched the plan to push Sam and Jay into vacating the property. With the ruse up, Sam and Jay ask them to leave the property.

On their way home from the drugstore after Jay’s decision to eat the strip club sushi, Sam and Jay reflect on the current events. Sam admits that she didn’t have much family and how the ghosts have become that family for them. When Sam mentions how sad she would be if she lost one of them, a bright light beams down on Woodstone….meaning one of the ghosts has gotten “sucked off” to heaven.
