Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I think I would describe my sound as a new experience, a new way to hear music. I definitely have that type of voice and sound that leaves you thinking about it all day.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Some of my musical influences are Jenni Rivera, Selena, Chavela Vargas, Rocio Durcal and Julieta Venegas because I grew up listening to them, but when it comes to the new generation I definitely look up to the new female voices in the scene.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Nadie Sabe.”
A) I wrote this song while I was in a deep state of depression in my life because I didn’t know who I was, what I wanted for my life and future and I had no one to talk to. I didn’t feel quite accepted by all the people in the industry, but as I wrote this song with my friend Yayo Anguiano I knew I had a voice and lots of people who were going through the same situation would understand me and very much feel appreciated in some type of way.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) They feel appreciated, as I’m talking about who I am, what I want, and the fact that I’m no longer going to care about what other people think.
Q) The video for the song is so visually stunning! How does it play into the message behind the music?
A) Thank you so much! I think what identifies me in the video is the doors closing. This has a very deep meaning – it means that many people have had difficulty being accepted for who they are.
Q) What made Phoenix, Arizona the perfect spot to mirror the topics of the song?
A) I think it was the perfect spot for the video because I have been living in Arizona for the past three years and I thought it would be a great idea to give it a cool shot to let people see how cool this city is. And I love the desert, too.
Q) I’d love to know the meaning behind the doors throughout the desert.
A) This has a very deep meaning for me – the doors being closed means opportunities being denied for being your true self and means lots of families leaving family members behind because they’re not who they want them to be. As my song says “Nadie sabe y no entiende que es lo que se siente, que te excluyan por tener gustos diferentes,” which means being left out because of your likings.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I really have to go through something in order to write. It sounds funny, but my life is so interesting and it has so much drama sometimes that I just grab my pen and write something about it and make it a song. Sometimes I just make something up in my head and I try my best to make it a song, but I pretty much believe that some of my best songs are created while I’m going through something.
Yes, I’m the type of writer that I need to have my guitar near me in order to write a song, I cannot write without a melody first.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I write my songs and I sing them. I have to give credits to my producer Andres Sanchez because he’s the one behind my music. He’s the one who records the instruments, mixes and masters and listens to my ideas and makes them happen. While he’s recording I like to give him ideas of how the instruments and the music should sound in order to make my music sound how I want it to sound.
Q) With “Nadie Sabe” such a success, is this a prelude to a full album or EP?
A) We are currently working on an EP! Definitely excited for this because it comes with such beautiful songs that I grew up with and I’m pretty sure you did, too!
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) My favorite place to perform is Mexico. I haven’t been there in a while, but it is definitely my favorite place. I cannot tell you a specific city, but I just love it. It feels like home. My country feels like I’m making my country and my city, Ciudad Obregón Sonora, proud.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I have some features coming up in my EP, such as my friend SoyIby. I love her voice and I love her music!
Q) For those inspired by your work with Corridos Rescue Corridos, how can they get involved in this organization and the work you do with LGBTQ+ initiatives?
A) You can get involved just by listening to the song. Every single time you play this song you are making a difference. The royalties of “Nadie Sabe” are being donated for the homeless people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. We are helping them and we are doing our best to make it happen and give them a second chance.
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Lately I’ve been listening a lot to Natalia Lafourcade and Carla Morrison, currently getting inspired by the lyrics of their songs and their calming and relaxing voice. I listen to them to get inspired and feel relax
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would like to say that I’m so grateful for the people who are still here after six years of making music. I would like to say thank you to the new people, too! It’s always an honor to make music that makes you feel loved, identified and appreciated. I’m going to be back with more music soon!
