The episode opens with a convenience store and an armed robbery, almost. Ethan (Leo Howard) and MG (Quincy Fouse) have taken up being vigilantes by moonlight and stop the robbers. MG compels them into disarming themselves and the unnamed pair deliver themselves into the nearest police patrol car.

The next morning Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) is in a good mood, which confuses both Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) and Cleo (Omono Okojie). So much so that Landon is concerned Hope might actually be possessed. But she says that all is right with the world. Landon’s not dead, Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) no longer despises her and now all there’s left to do is figure out where all the monsters are coming from.

Lizzie surprises Josie (Kaylee Bryant) by showing up outside her locker at Mystic Falls High. She says that Josie broke the twin code by not telling her about her crush on Finch (Courtney Bandeko), but she’s here to help anyway. Lizzie says she has a plan to help Josie get the girl. Josie would rather Lizzie not help, but Lizzie is undeterred. She makes a show of leaving, but then turns herself invisible and sticks around at the school anyway. Meanwhile, Finch invites Josie for lunch.

MG and Ethan are riding high after the robbery they averted. Ethan wants to make it a regular thing. He got his mother’s old police scanner and everything. However, MG points out that Mystic Falls has a pretty low crime rate. Last night was likely a fluke. Ethan thinks between the two of them they could probably solve all the crimes no one knows about.

Landon and Alaric (Matt Davis) are studying in the library. Alaric explains the artifact he gave Hope to wish on. The artifact has been handled by quite a few historical figures. It went untouched for years until Hope opened it. Alaric thinks that could be the root of their current monster problem. Landon questions if a vampire might be able to help with research faster than he could. Alaric admits that this is a way to keep Landon safe while Hope tests out a different theory.

Hope and Cleo are having a picnic, which isn’t really a picnic. She tells Cleo that she has a theory. They’ve been assuming that the monsters wanted Landon, but the gremlin kidnapped her so maybe she’s the true target. She wants to see if that’s the case by spending some time away from the protection spells at the school. Of course, she decided all this without Cleo’s initial knowledge or consent. She says that Cleo can back out if she wants, but Hope just thought she might need a push. Cleo agrees and the girls aren’t alone long before they’re face to face with a monster.

With long gray hair, eyes streaked with black goo where others might have tears and a mouth sewn shut the creature shakes the forest with its shrieking. The girls manage to subdue it with a boundary spell and present her to the rest of the gang. Alaric identifies her as a banshee (Elinor Gunn). Banshees are messengers as in most myths they announce death.  But how do they get the Banshee to talk without their ears bleeding?

Cleo is finding being the target of the monsters a little overwhelming. So, she goes to talk to Jed (Ben Levin). He laments that since two-timing MG with Alyssa he’s still been getting the cold shoulder. He hoped to find a way to make it up to everyone, but he’s come up blank. Until he’s suddenly struck with an idea and runs off.

Ethan is really excited to start a life of fighting crime. MG points out that they can just hang out and not play at being super heroes. Ethan agrees, but ponders how they cannot talk about all the different possibilities knowing that vampires are real. Plus, Ethan admits that since losing his spot on the football team it’s nice to have something to care about again. So, MG opts to blow off class to listen to the police scanner with him.

Lizzie uses reverse psychology to trick Josie into asking Finch out on a real date. Back at the school Jed presents his idea to the group. There’s a spell that can allow the Banshee to speak through a willing vessel. He volunteers and everyone’s impressed that he found such an obscure spell. They also give him truth weed so that the monster can’t give them the run around. The banshee speaks through him and says that Malivore offered her freedom in exchange for Cleo. She refuses to answer why. And then she tells Hope that if Cleo stays at the school Landon will die.

Cleo goes to find Hope, but she is told not to fret. “Magic always has a loophole,” she explains is practically their school motto. Landon is not dying and she’s not leaving. But if Hope’s so sure, Cleo asks, why did she spell Landon into his room?

Josie goes to Finch to make a rom-com speech. She tells her she’s into her. Josie says she has had a rocky romantic history and she thinks Finch is cool and hot and she wants to give things a shot. Josie asks her out, but Finch says she’s busy.  She leaves Josie with her friend group who just looks embarrassed for her.

Cleo and Hope continue their talk. Cleo wanted a place to call home, but didn’t want to cause problems. Over tea Cleo asks Hope flat out if she’d be happier if Cleo would just leave the school. Hope says yes and Cleo is shocked at her answer. She tries to take it back, but Cleo explains that she used truth weed, so Hope does want her to leave. So, she walks out of the library.

Elsewhere, Josie tells Lizzie that she got rejected. Josie tells her that Finch said she’s busy indefinitely, which is code for her seeing someone else. Lizzie apologizes for pushing her. She says she wishes she’d just respected her wishes and kept magic out of this. However, actually Josie said now she wants Lizzie’s help. She wants Lizzie to use her magic to find out if things are serious between Finch and whoever she’s seeing.

Hope goes to Alaric to update him on recent happenings and things have taken a turn. Alaric was trying to reason with the Banshee, but the Banshee via Jed explains that it’s no use. Banshee’s are spirits that takeover humans who’ve experienced unbearable grief. The woman she used to be lost her child and her village abandoned her because they couldn’t handle her tears. Alaric insists he’s not like most people. Even if that is the case, the Banshee points out that using Jed as a vessel might not have been the greatest choice. He’s a werewolf and tonight is a full moon.

Alaric tells Hope that they need to break the connection now. But Hope has a question first. Is Landon safe now that Cleo’s left the school? She says no, they just needed to get Cleo away from the school’s protection. Now, Landon and Cleo will die. With that said, Hope breaks the spell.

Hope goes off to look for Cleo. Landon follows after and she tells him that Cleo cloaked herself so she can’t use a locator spell. Hope laments that they can never just be happy and is sorry it always has to be this way for them. Landon says it’s no one’s fault, but offers a different solution. Hope can turn into a wolf and use Cleo’s scent to find her.

Jed is doing some transforming of his own and Alaric puts him in the dungeon. Through the pain Jed tells Ric that when the Banshee was inside his head he learned something important: her true name.

MG and Ethan are on a stake out when they hear something on the scanner. There’s a break-in at the high school, but the voices on the radio say it’s a false alarm that happens once a month. Ethan thinks they should check it out. MG thinks it’s probably nothing, but Ethan says he’s poured over his mother’s files and a lot of weird stuff has happened at their school. Then, MG says he should check it out alone as by Ethan’s own admission he is a human sidekick. He speeds away.

There is a werewolf mid-transformation inside the school. But it’s not Hope or Jed. Finch is the wolf and she finds herself face to face with Lizzie. Lizzie offers to help, but running low on magic she makes a run for it at Finch’s behest. She ends up alone in a classroom and has no magical objects to siphon from. Someone bursts through the door and it’s MG. Werewolves prefer to chase vampires over humans, so he lured Finch away. He tells Lizzie to make a run for it and he’ll get her away from the school.

MG is outside, but he can’t see Finch. Although, he can hear her growling. He yells that he knows that her instincts are saying to attack, but she can fight it. Unfortunately, she can’t because she jumps out of the darkness and tackles him. It looks bad for MG, but then luckily he’s saved by Ethan hitting the werewolf with a shovel. Ethan says he’s not bad for a sidekick.

Cleo is wandering through the woods and is knocked out by the skeleton-like creature that’s been lurking around. And Alaric goes to talk to the Banshee whose name was once Kaelen. She says she knows that happened to her son. The English took him to fight in their war when he was eleven years old, circa 1014. She never knew what happened to him, but Ric says he survived. He lived long enough to have children and grandchildren. Ric apologizes for what happened to her, but knowing the truth gives her some peace. She reverts to her human form and tells Ric she knows why Malivore wants Cleo.

In the woods wolf Hope catches up to the creature and Cleo. Luckily, she is about to rescue Cleo from the unnamed creature. Later, she apologizes to Cleo and promises she doesn’t want her to leave. Cleo wonders what the creatures want from her. Hope says she doesn’t know, but she thinks that she’s fought the creature that took her before.

Lizzie goes to Josie and tells her that Finch is seeing someone else and it’s serious. She tells Josie she’d end up with a broken heart, as opposed to Finch just being a werewolf. Lizzie says she should’ve stayed out of it, but she was worried that Josie didn’t need her anymore. They end the night cuddling.

Landon and Hope take a stroll and Landon says they’ve gotta find happiness between the monsters. With that said, he shows her a romantic dinner complete with faerie lights. Jed and Cleo talk post transformation and Cleo asks if Jed got any insight into why Malivore wants her. It took some time, but he did get an answer.

We cut away to Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) and Alaric. They are burying Kaelen’s body. Dorian shares that he does not miss this part of the job. Alaric says he understands. And he thinks he knows why Malivore wants Cleo. She’s the seventh daughter of the seventh daughter in her family. And for witches this means she is a muse, a witch with an innate ability to inspire creativity. Malivore wants to use her to figure a way out of the prison world.

Landon and Hope are asleep and the skeleton-like creature comes in. He cuts off a lock of Hope and Landon’s hair. Hope wakes up and the creature is gone. It’s unclear if it was a dream or not.
