Legacies – I Couldn’t Have Done This Without You

The episode opens at a strip wall with the Necromancer (Ben Geurens). He’s fallen on hard times, by monster standards anyway, because much to his horror and a security guard’s annoyance he looks entirely human and has lost his powers.

He’s not the only one having a rough day. Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Alaric (Matt Davis) are finding returning is complicated. Hope has got a domineering roommate named Alyssa (Olivia Liang) and a confusing schedule. And Alaric has concerns about Sebastian (Thomas Doherty). Apparently, there are rules about enrolling vampires over the age of seventeen. Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) says he’ll have his intern look into it.

Flashback time. Apparently, if you’re a necromancer who has been made human your job prospects are minimal. He’s working at an ice cream shop in Texas and hating every minute of it.

Josie (Kaylee Bryant) is stealing the dark object she made with Clarke from Alaric’s office and narrowly avoids being caught. Alaric has a meeting with Sebastian and explains the rules, but admits that since Sebastian had a 450-year timeout he might be an exception. He says he can stay if he passes the tests. Landon will administer them because he can’t die permanently. On the teen drama front things are a bit awkward between Hope, Josie and Landon.

Back with the Necromancer he’s explaining to his clueless co-worker Chad (Charles Jazz Terrier) that he misses being feared and respected. Or maybe Chad isn’t so clueless as he says he believes the Necromancer’s stories. And the Necromancer just brought a bug back to life so maybe his powers aren’t so gone.

Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) is reading comic books with MG (Quincy Fouse). He’s happy but confused because Lizzie was furious with him. She decided to let bygones be bygones because she needs something to distract her from sleeping with Sebastian. The revelation horrifies MG.

Returning to one’s former glory is easier said than done. The Necromancer is getting depressed and doesn’t get why Malivore screwed him over after promising him peace. Chad suggests they get revenge.

Landon introduces Sebastian to the werewolf pack and we learn that Rafael is spending some quality time with his father. In the meantime, Sebastian needles Landon about not having powers beyond resurrection. Craving a distraction, he drafts Sebastian into the wolves’ dodgeball game. Despite getting hit with a ball, Sebastian refrains from losing it.

The Necromancer and Chad go to urinate in the Malivore pit only to find it has been destroyed. The Necromancer says if Malivore has been defeated anything is possible. Chad asks how to level the Necromancer up. The Necromancer says power requires sacrifice and says he has to sacrifice the thing he’s come to value most: Chad. This revelation would be sweet if he didn’t kill Chad and throw him into what used to be the pit. There’s some unpleasant cutting and then raising Chad from perdition. He tosses Chad a red cloak and tells him that they’re going on a road trip…to a place with immense supernatural energy and a lot of people who’ve died: Mystic Falls.

MG still isn’t fond of Sebastian. Alyssa encourages him to make him fail the entrance exam. She drops blood, working the vampires into a feeding frenzy. Sebastian, of people, calms MG down. After MG vamp speeds away, Sebastian tells Landon he knows Alyssa spilled the blood on purpose. Between her and budding Ripper MG, Sebastian wonders if he’s the most worrisome thing at The Salvatore School.

Josie is practicing some illicit magic and catches a glimpse of the future, which isn’t looking very bright. She sees herself going dark and the school burning to the ground. After the vision she comes across Dorian in the library. He’s wondering what she’s working on and Josie admits she’s doing an assignment Vardemus/Clarke gave her. Dorian reminds her that being dead now she won’t be graded on it. Taking a closer look, Dorian points out the spell work in the “assignment” would call for multiple witches. Before Josie has to answer anymore tough questions Hope comes in with a save. She offers to help Josie and Dorian backs off.

The Necromancer and Chad are at the Mystic Falls cemetery. Apparently, to seal his bond with the town the Necromancer needs to commit a murder of extreme cruelty. Chad is looking a little hesitant.

Hope tells a standoffish Josie that Lizzie clued her in about the black-magic holding clock. She says her friend Vincent told her there’s no way to nullify the black magic, but it can be contained and she knows a spell.

A week ago the Necromancer remembered Hope along with everyone else. Now, he wants to kill her and all her friends. Chad is still not looking so into the murder and mayhem.

Sebastian’s final test is hanging out with the witches. Landon tries to warn him not to ruffle any feathers, but Sebastian brushes him off. “Witches love me,” he says. Alyssa presents him with an empathic globe. It says Sebastian is terrified of the modern world, he feels that Lizzie is out of his league and he worries the school won’t let him stay. Landon tries to usher him away and gets thrown across the room for his trouble. The witches cast a pain infliction spell on Sebastian until Lizzie begs them to stop.

Landon goes to check on Sebastian in the gym. He shares some backstory. His parents sold him into slavery when he was seven years old. He tried to escape, but was always found and abused pretty badly. He tells Landon he gets the world’s unkind, but Lizzie wants him. For now, that’s enough.

Hope and Josie talk magic. Hope talks Lizzie through the spell and Josie is worried. Why did Clarke choose her? Hope says she’s a trusting person and powerful. Josie says she doesn’t want to be either of those things anymore. When she practices black magic, she doesn’t feel like herself.

Landon and Alaric talk about Sebastian’s tests. The verdict is that Landon says Sebastian is dangerous only in the way everyone at the school is. And speaking from personal experience, (accidentally got the Malivore ball rolling) sometimes people just need a chance.

We zoom in a young woman jogging at night. Sebastian blocks her way and she decides to go in the opposite direction. He ends up feeding on her only to be shot in the back by a disappointed looking Ric.

Chad tries and fails to kill The Necromancer. He wasn’t so into the plan to kill a bunch of teenagers, so he decided The Necromancer needed to be stopped. The downside of being resurrected was that The Necromancer controls him now. Unfortunately for Chad, The Necromancer says he’s not his friend…he’s his master. Chad has a theory. What if Malivore didn’t make him human to screw him over, but to give him a second chance? If he could’ve lived a human life well he could’ve had peace. But he messed it all up. The Necromancer silences Chad.

Alaric gives a sedated Sebastian in the form of an ultimatum – play by the rules or go back in the box. Sebastian taunts Ric by saying Lizzie will be the one who sets him free. He adds that he’s been compelling her into sex all over the school, just what every father never wants to hear. Sebastian says no matter what he’ll never be able to protect her from him. He encourages Ric to kill him. Ric raises the crossbow and we cut away.

The Necromancer sacrifices Clarke’s body to form a portal. Meanwhile, MG is having some growing pains. He tells Dorian his day sucked. Dorian says it’s about to get better and introduces him to his new intern Kym (Ebboney Wilson).

Josie admits she’s been pretty lonely. Landon is feeling inadequate because he doesn’t seem to have any active powers. Josie and Landon talk and agree to be friends. Then, they reveal a surprise for Hope as they rescued some of her stuff.

Alaric tells Lizzie a half-truth, that he gave Sebastian a choice to follow the rules or leave. And Sebastian chose to leave. Lizzie tearfully says that’s for the best.

The Necromancer raises a monster and offers if immortality if it goes to the school and gets him what he needs. But what is it that he needs?
