We’re Being Punked Pedro opens with a flashback. It’s 14th century France and two men in cloaks are walking through a forest. They found what they were looking for: the knife we recognize from the Salvatore school, but one of the men wants to turn back. The other brushes him off. It turns out he should’ve listened because they’re not alone. A gargoyle comes out of the darkness and attacks. The unnamed duo are witches and use fire magic to try to fight the gargoyle, but to no avail. We hear their screams and the scene fades to black.

In the modern day at the Salvatore school the kids are in big trouble. Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) get called out of class in into a meeting with an unhappy Alaric (Matthew Davis). The girls and everyone else who was at the disastrous football game with be spending the day at cleaning up Mystic Falls. Lizzie’s outraged and thinks she didn’t do anything wrong. Her father rebuts she started a brawl at a charity game after Alaric told her to keep a low profile. Lizzie says it wasn’t her fault because she was provoked and if anyone’s to blame it’s Josie. If Josie had just let them win, Lizzie says, everything would’ve been fine. Josie is shocked at his sister’s betrayal. Hope sides with Josie and begrudgingly the more level-headed twin thanks her. Alaric’s not buying Lizzie’s logic and Hope says she doesn’t get why she’s being punished. She wasn’t at the game, but Alaric looks at her meaningfully and says she knows what she did.

The twins storm out and Hope wants a one-on-one with the headmaster. She says she wants to help with research, but it’s a no from Ric. He’s got Dorian to help and reminds her that she’s a kid. Hope resents this and says he doesn’t think she’s a kid when he needs her. Alaric says he can’t drag her or anyone else into the craziness that’s been happening and says for today she needs to be just a student. But, until he figures things out, he sends her off with one instruction: don’t’ tell anyone about the dragon.

In the town square Lizzie pounces on Hope. She wants to know why her father’s angry with her as apparently Alaric never gets mad at Hope. Lizzie–turning a shade of green–says Hope’s the prodigal daughter. Hope ignores her and says she’s got no time for girl talk. Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) tells the gang they’ve got options for the clean-up. Lizzie goes with graffiti and Hope goes with trash clean-up. Josie surprises her sister by volunteering with Hope. She reminds Lizzie that she threw her under the bus earlier and an angry Lizzie storms off with the rest of the graffiti group.

Elsewhere, Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) and Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) are trying and failing to enjoy living off the land. Landon apologizes to Rafael because the school could’ve been good for him. Rafael says where Landon goes that he goes. Landon worries Hope hates him. About that, Raf’s got some questions. Why did he take the knife in the first place? What was with all the lying? Landon says he doesn’t understand it completely, but it was like the knife wanted him to take it. Rafael says knives don’t have thoughts of their own, but that’s irrelevant, Rafael tells him, because they’ll never see Hope again. Moving on, they need money and Landon’s got an idea for making some. They’re gonna use Raf’s werewolf skills.

In Mystic Falls MG (Quincy Fouse), Kaleb (Chris Lee) and Lizzie are not having fun trying to get the graffiti off the wall. Lizzie’s mad Kaleb’s not helping, but he doesn’t think he should. Kaleb thinks it’s wrong they’re the only ones being punished and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to win. He gives a speech about supernaturals being better when the Salvatore school students walk up and pick another fight. Lizzie and Dana (Kate Garfield) trade a few verbal jabs and Dana’s buddy Connor (Sam Ashby) throws his milkshake on Lizzie. A furious Lizzie storms home.

Meanwhile, in his office Alaric’s hitting the books pretty hard only to be interrupted by Emma (Karen David). Apparently, Ric’s blowing off a session and counseling is mandatory for everyone at the school. Alaric’s busy finding out the knife is indestructible. The two are interrupted by Lizzie who has some choice words for her father. She says the game and the milkshake incident were his fault because he was M.I.A. and it’s unfair that he tells Hope secrets and not her. He sends Lizzie to the garden to cool off.

Lizzie sulks in the sun and vents to a little boy named Pedro (Renzor Allen) about how people are disappointing. Pedro interrupts and says the gargoyle statue behind them moved. Lizzie thinks it’s an illusion until it’s standing right in front of them. Lizzie and Pedro make a run for it. They get back inside the building and Lizzie sends Pedro to find her father. It’s just her and the gargoyle and she’s attempting a spell, but the gargoyle attacks her.

At the community service project Josie and Hope are picking up trash, not harmoniously. Josie asks Hope why she picks fights. Josie says anytime she gets a chance Hope pokes at the twins. Hope responds that they do their share of poking. Josie asks what went on between Hope and Alaric. Hope’s not giving anything up. In the middle of telling Josie there’s nothing to tell she accidentally stabs herself in the foot with a trash picker. Josie pulls it out and the girls share a laugh.

The boys are betting money with a few people Rafael can’t jump on top of a building. With his werewolf strength he does. It turns out to be pretty lucrative.

When Alaric and Pedro get to Lizzie she’s paralyzed on the floor with three lashes across her stomach. The gargoyle’s infected her with something so Alaric calls a lockdown. He then tries and fails to kill the gargoyle.

Hope and Josie have called a truce. They commiserate over bad taste in crushes. Josie mentions she had a new crush, but Lizzie called dibs. Hope guesses it’s Rafael and asks when it’ll be Josie’s turn. And since Josie shared her secret, Hope fesses up about getting in trouble for dark magic. Josie explains that Lizzie’s only on edge because their mother has been gone so much. Hope says she understands, and they talk about her mother a little. Josie apologizes for not expressing her and Lizzie’s condolences better.

Hope and Josie astral project to see what Landon and Rafael are doing, but Josie stops. Her twin senses are tingling. Something’s up with Lizzie.

Landon and Rafael are enjoying the spoils of their bets when Landon finds a threatening note mixed in with the cash. He wants to leave.

Josie and Hope confront Dorian, who’s been ordered to keep the girls away. It doesn’t go over well. Oblivious to the chaos, MG is making out with Dana. That is until he compels the truth about her true feelings out of her. He puts a stop to the hook-up not wanting to take advantage.

Raf wants to know why Landon’s in such a hurry. Landon says they need to keep moving. The conversation is cut short by two darts in the neck. They pass out.

The gargoyles continuing to terrorize the school and Emma cloaks the kids, but the gargoyle’s not giving up. Elsewhere, the boys wake up chained to a tree. But they’re in the luck, the werewolf hunter who was after them is dead and their knight in cotton armor is Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen).

Apparently, this is a rough day all around. MG goes looking for Kaleb and finds him on a bus feeding on Dana. This is against school rules. Kaleb says he’s not really hurting her and compels Dana away.  When she’s gone, Kaleb gets MG to promise not to tell.

Hope and Josie go back to school and find Alaric. They come bearing research on killing gargoyles. It’s going to take a lot of smashing, but they need to act fast. Lizzie casts a spell confining the monster to the school and it’s been lifted. Josie’s got an axe and she’s ready.

Back with the boys, Jeremy explains he’s known Alaric since he was a kid. He works for Alaric sometimes and Ric sent him to find the boys. He explains the now dead werewolf hunter and tells them not to get cocky about being supernatural. It doesn’t give them as big an advantage as they think and the world’s a dangerous place. Rule one: no powers in public. He’ll take them back to school. Jeremy admits he sent the threatening note to scare them home and this leaves Rafael angry and surprised since Landon promised no more lies. Landon apologizes and defends himself by saying he just didn’t want to ruin Rafael’s fun. It’s the happiest he’s seen him since Cassie died. Raf forgives him and says they’ll go back to school together. Landon reminds him of the Salvatore school’s no human policy, but Raf says he and Landon are a package deal.

At school Alaric, Josie and Hope are going up against the gargoyle. The gargoyle lunges for Hope and Ric jumps in front of her much to his daughter’s horror. This stops the gargoyle and Josie and Hope cast a spell to smash the gargoyle to smithereens. Hope congratulates Josie, but she’s focused on her father. She demands to know how he could throw himself in front of the gargoyle like that. Alaric says he knew it wouldn’t hurt him because of the research, but Josie storms off.

Hope and Alaric talk as Ric explains the gargoyle’s history: it loved humans so much it swore to protect them from supernatural creatures and never harm them. After the history lesson, Hope gives the headmaster some advice: secrets tear people apart.

Alaric takes the advice and explains the extra supernatural events happening around the knife to the student body. There’s a whole supernatural world out there they don’t know about and more threats might be coming. They want the knife, so he sends Dorian away to hide it.

After the assembly Hope smiles at Josie, clearly feeling bonding after the monster attack. However, Josie who’s reconciled with Lizzie, ignores her.

We hear a monologue from Alaric about the school being a family that will stand together, and Hope’s night doesn’t get any better. Walking away from Josie’s rejection she runs into Landon and storms away.

Outside, Dana and a girl named Sasha are waiting at the Salvatore school planning on vandalizing it. But their friend Connor’s got the spray paint and isn’t there. Their phones are out of commission and this was a bad night to be a vandal. When Sasha tries to get better reception outside the car she vanishes and Dana hears her scream. A minute later there’s a thud on top of the hood and Dana screams at whatever’s crawled onto the window shield.
