In a flashback hinted at from the first episode, Hazel (Cristin Milioti) is lounging by the pool with her magazine and goes to drink her green juice. When she places the glass down, she passes out moments later and knocks the glass off the table, shattering it. Meanwhile, Byron (Billy Magnussen) sits by as his team goes to work on implanting a chip in Hazel’s head. Once we come back to present time, Hazel wakes up in her father Herbert’s (Ray Romano) house. Herbert has prepared spaghetti and tries to introduce his doll girlfriend he affectionately calls Diane, but Hazel has only one mission: get her father’s plane and shotgun to keep running from Byron.

Herbert is still salty about Hazel’s 10-year disappearance from his life, sort of ignoring the fact that Hazel is trying to see where the chip has been implanted in her head. Luckily, it is Herbert who catches the random lose patch of hair on Hazel’s head, which clues Hazel into the bald patch on her head where a new scar exists. Herbert tells Hazel that he sold his plane to the Voss Family, causing Hazel to leave in a hurry with his shotgun in tow. But she is not alone on the road, Herringbone (Dan Bakkedahl) has found her after she chopped off a few of his fingers and barricaded him in a room at the strip club. Quite angry at having his accounts and life taken from him, Herringbone tells Hazel she was chipped three days ago and wants to help her escape Byron’s grasp. But when he produces a hood to go over her head and tells her she will have to hide in the trunk, Hazel is not buying the story and shoots Herringbone again before fleeing the scene. Herbert catches up with Hazel on the road and helps her get away while Byron and Fiffany (Noma Dumezweni) watch from a screen in Byron’s car.

We flashback to one of Byron’s birthdays and Hazel has thrown him his first birthday party ever with a cake and piñata. Touched by the gesture because he has never had a party thrown for him, Byron is overcome with emotion and eager to try out the activities Hazel has set up for them. Back in the present Hazel, Herbert and Diane arrive at the local bar called The Spotted Rose. Hazel and Herbert go inside to convince the Voss family to give Herbert his plane back so that Hazel can escape. In another flashback, Hazel encounters the young Ma Voss (Ashley Dulaney) and her sons Daniel (Gunnar Goldberg) and Shane (Riley Webb). The boys make fun of young Hazel (Juliet Rusche) and the death of her mother Lottie (Ione Skye) when she comes to collect her father at the bar. Young Ma Voss is apologetic for their behavior but points Hazel in the direction of her father. While getting drunk and passing out on a bench outdoors, Hazel tells her father that there’s no food in the house and he gives her money for wings before handing over the car keys so she can drive them home.

Back in the present, Hazel is startled by the bartender (Augusto Aguilera) and her vital signs on Byron’s monitor shows that she is aroused by him. Byron attempts to call the bar, but when the bartender picks up the phone he curses him out and then hangs up. Herbert manages to broker a deal with the Voss family that he must beat one of the Voss boys on the bull to get the plane back. Unfortunately, Herbert loses and as Hazel consoles him while he recovers on the ground she notices that Shane (Chris Bagnall) has broken into Herbert’s truck to steal Diane. Hazel takes chase after Shane and is only able to stop him once the bartender knocks him down. Herbert catches up and says he can’t find his car keys, only for Hazel to produce them.

Upon their ride home Hazel realizes that Byron has finally found her and is waiting inside her father’s home. Herbert offers to help her run away, but Hazel realizes that she must face Byron once and for all, walking into the house. There, Hazel sees herself on the television as Byron watches her walk in the house. Byron turns around and tells Hazel that he thought they were happy. Hazel admits that she is not happy, finally telling Byron that she wants a divorce.
