Donna (Sibongile Mlambo) breaks into the Pownall Seafood facility, and Ryn (Eline Powell) tells Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola) and Ben Pownall (Alex Roe) that her sister is hunting. Looking around the facility, Donna finds several bins of fish. Aldon Decker (Ron Yuan) pulls up to the facility and answers a call from Officer Nina Lopez (Gigi Saul Guerrero), warning him that Admiral Harrison (Anthony Harrison) was looking for him. She tells him that she told Harrison nothing about Decker’s secret trip, and Decker thanks her. Decker walks to the door and finds it open. He looks around the facility as Donna goes into Ted Pownall’s (David Cubitt) office. She examines his desk and notices pictures of Ben. Donna hears a noise and finds Decker. She quickly hides and watches until he leaves the facility.

The next morning, Ben shows Maddie a newspaper article criticizing Pownall Seafood for overfishing and tells her that he has to tell Ted to bring the boats in. Maddie points out that it will be difficult, but Ben is confident he’ll be able to convince him. Ben promises Ryn that things will work out with her sister, but Ryn states that Donna doesn’t trust her anymore. Maddie holds her hand and promises that she’ll come around if they show that they can help the mermaids. Ben serves Maddie coffee and Ryn fish before kissing Maddie goodbye and saying I love you. Ryn gets up and kisses him goodbye and says I love you, and Maddie tells Ben that she got a kiss the other day.

Helen Hawkins (Rena Owen) asks Donna where she went during the night, commenting that she has the same habits as Ryn. Donna doesn’t answer, and Helen assesses that she doesn’t like it here. Donna asks for Ryn, and Helen promises to arrange a meeting and hopes that Donna can talk some sense into her. Ted questions why the article only called out Pownall Seafood by name, and Ben points out that they’re the biggest company involved in overfishing. Doug Pownall (Andrew Jenkins) asks why they’re being singled out as the bad guy, and Ben replies that they are the bad guys. Ben attempts to convince Ted and Doug to reduce fishing in order to improve their image, and argues that they’d make a bigger profit selling their seafood to high-end grocery stores. Ted and Doug laugh at the idea, and Ted asks Ben to come to Elaine Pownall’s (Sarah-Jane Redmond) charity gala. Ben tells him he’s busy, but Ted tells him that Elaine was denied another clinical trial.

Maddie brings Ryn over to Helen’s apartment, and Helen tells Maddie that she went out and found Donna. Maddie asks what her connection is to them and Helen tells her there’s a lot that she isn’t telling them. Ryn and Donna stare at each other in tense silence until Ryn approaches her, puts her head on her shoulder, and declares that they shouldn’t fight anymore. They jump at the sound of the teakettle, and Helen explains that she made chamomile tea to calm them down.  Donna and Ryn ask Helen and Maddie to leave so they can talk in private, and they leave.

Decker looks around the aquatic center and Jerry (David Kaye) asks if he can help him. He asks to speak to Ben, and Jerry asks who he is. Decker says that he’s a biologist interested in Ben’s work, and Jerry tells him that Ben will be at Elaine’s charity gala that night. Ryn tells Donna that Ben and Maddie can help them, but Donna tells her that she saw Ben’s picture in the seafood facility. She explains that Ben isn’t involved, but Donna grabs her and accuses Ryn of helping Ben instead of her. Ryn replies that she protected him from Donna trying to kill him, and Donna assesses that she likes him.

Deputy Marissa Staub (Tammy Gillis) looks at Donna’s sketch and tells Deputy Clarence (Graeme Duffy) that drugs must be involved in the warehouse attack and that there is a connection between Donna and Ryn. Chris Mueller (Chad Rook) and Xander McClure (Ian Verdun) see Decker drive by, and Chris identifies him as the man who found him in Alaska. They tell Ben, and the three of them question what Decker is doing in town. Chris mentions that Decker asked him if Donna sang to him and Xander believes he’s in town because a mermaid is. Ben and Maddie research Decker and his work, and Ben tells her that Decker won’t stop until he finds Donna. He tells Maddie about the singing and admits that Ryn sang to him. Maddie asks why he didn’t tell her, and Ben apologizes, admitting that’s he’s not sure what it means. She asks him what the song feels like, and Ben replies that it’s like a drug that he needs.

Ben and Maddie enter the gala, and Maddie is concerned that she ruined things with Elaine during their lunch. He assures her things will be fine, but she isn’t convinced and heads to the bar. Maddie runs into Ted at the bar, and he asks about her dad. Ben approaches Elaine, who is glad to see him. She tells him that there’s someone she wants him to meet and Decker introduces himself. Ben shakes his hand, and Ted tells Maddie that her father was the first on the scene of Elaine’s accident, calling him a good man. Decker explains that he has been researching a rare marine creature whose stem cells helped cure paralysis in several rats.

Donna tells Ryn they need to go back into the water, but Ryn replies that they will die out there. Ryn tells her they need Ben and Maddie, but Donna replies that Ryn is the one that needs them. Donna shows what humans did to her, but Ryn insists Ben and Maddie are not like that. However, Donna tells her how much pain she’s in and is upset that Ryn is choosing them over her. Ryn blames herself for Donna getting captured and apologizes. Decker tries to talk to Ben about his work, and Ben tells him that he shouldn’t have given Elaine false hope. He apologizes and asks Ben for help with his work. Ben tells him that he knows why he’s in town, and whispers that he knows what Donna did to him. Doug tells Ben that Elaine is getting recognized, and Ben leaves Decker declaring Elaine comes first.

Staub puts up Ryn and Donna’s sketches, and Sidney (Rick McLean) identifies Ryn. He tells her that she’s been around town, and Staub tells him that she’ll ask him first next time. Ben tells Maddie that Decker’s there, and insists that they have to stay one step ahead of him. Maddie apologizes to Elaine about lunch, but Elaine replies that she just wants what’s best for Ben. Meanwhile, Ben tells Decker that he might know where Donna is and suggests that Decker wants to find Donna but doesn’t want the military to. Ben requests that he order the military to call of their fishing plans, and taunts Decker about the mermaid’s song when he refuses.

Ryn visits Helen, and tells her that Decker hurt Donna. Helen tells her Donna will be better once she gets away from him, but Ryn clutches her heart and says she won’t be. Helen tells her that the feeling will stay with her and embraces her. Ben asks Decker what’s going on if he wants to see Donna again, and Decker details the government’s plan and confirms it will begin that night. Ben and Maddie call Helen and explain the situation, asking her to keep Ryn and Donna inside. He asks Helen to put Ryn on and she agrees to stay inside when Ben tells her what’s going on.

Xander approaches Decker as he pulls a syringe out of his car and asks where his mermaid is. Decker plays dumb, but Xander tells him everything he knows about what happened. Xander hypothesizes that the nurse that Chris escaped with is the mermaid they caught. Decker insists there’s no mermaid, but Xander insists he knows what he saw. However, Decker continues to explain that nobody has ever caught a mermaid, and comments that Xander must be a very special man.

Maddie goes to look for Decker, and Ted tells Ben that he’s going to stop overfishing. Doug confirms that Ben’s math is correct, and Ben is appreciative before walking away. Elaine tells Ben that she hasn’t seen Decker, but asks him to join her. She tells him she was turned away for another trial and asks Ben if he’s responsible for Decker coming to town. Ben insists he isn’t, and Elaine tells him that she knows she’s never getting out of the wheelchair. She’s thankful that he hasn’t given up on her, and Ben and Decker freeze as they hear the mermaid’s song though nobody else is affected.

Ben and Decker lock eyes before Decker walks away. Ben gets Maddie’s attention and they follow him. Decker is lured into the woods where he sees Donna. He tells her that he’s happy to see her and that he never meant to hurt her. Decker asks for another chance, but Ryn comes up behind him and she and Donna approach him. Ben and Maddie step into the clearing and ask what’s going on. Decker tries to plead with Donna, but Ryn breaks the syringe and strangles him. Ben tries to stop Ryn as she throws him to the ground, but Ryn reminds him that he hurt Donna. Ben tells Decker to call off the military’s plans, as Maddie warns Ryn that all of the mermaids are in danger.

Ryn lets go of Decker and he calls Harrison asking to call off the plan. However, Harrison refuses and compliments Decker’s work. Ben steps in front of Decker as Ryn lunges at him and urges her not to kill him. Donna throws Decker against a tree, and Ryn is hurt that Ben is choosing Decker over her. She grabs Donna and they walk away. Maddie checks on Decker, who warns her that Ryn and Donna can’t go back in the water. Elaine asks Ted if he’s pulling the boats to make Ben happy, but Ted insists that he doesn’t want to be part of the old guard. Ted tells her that Ben has good ideas and that he likes Maddie. Elaine is not a fan of Maddie, but Ted insists that Maddie reminds her of a young Elaine. He asks her to invite Maddie to lunch again, as Ben really likes her.

As they walk along the road, Donna tells Ryn that everything they learned about humans was true. However, Ryn refuses to believe it and insists that Donna only kill the bad humans. Donna is offended that Ryn is choosing humans over her and Ryn replies that she chooses not to kill. Ryn refuses to go back into the water and Donna walks away without her. Chris spots Donna walking on the docks and tells Xander. Xander chases after Donna and watches as she jumps into the water, transforms, and swims away.

Xander tells Chris to go get Calvin as he prepares the boat to follow Donna. Xander leaves a message for Ben telling him that he saw the mermaid and urges him to come down. Ben tells Maddie about the message, and Ben insists he needs to go out and save Ryn and Donna. Maddie wants to go too, but Ben urges her to stay behind in case they come back to land on their own. As Ryn stands on the docks, Staub approaches her and tells her to stop.
