Q) How would you describe your sound?

Melissa: Mermaid rock n roll, which is our umbrella term for really fun music. We love to dabble in all styles of music from punk to pop and sprinkles of influences all over!

Jackie: Mermaid glitter rock

Q) Your new single “Disappearing Girl” is out now, what was the writing process like for the song? Did you have the lyrics or the music first?

Melissa: The song started off as a guitar loop I made during a songwriting excursion we did in January 2020. It was about 1am when I recorded the riff, and then the following day we all made a story for the song and wrote the lyrics!

Jackie: For this song Melissa had started writing guitar and melodies and then her ideas sparked my own ideas and then we combined our lyrics and melodies and continued to finalize everything with all three of us. We have been writing more altogether so this song has a piece of each of us in it.

Q) “Disappearing Girl” was described about not being able to put yourself first while in a relationship, so the relationship eventually fizzles out. What do you hope people take away from it?

Melissa: I hope people can learn to value the importance of self-love! Like RuPaul said, “How the hell are you gonna love someone else if you can’t love yourself?” And I couldn’t agree more! Sometimes things are not meant to be with another person, but at the end of the day you are yourself in your body and have to love and take care of yourself!

Jackie: I hope people realize that it’s ok to feel lost in a relationship because, at the end of the day, all relationships are learning experiences and it’s how you grow from those experiences. But most importantly you’ll always have your self-waiting for you on the other side. You have to count on yourself and love yourself first and foremost.

Q) The song was released via Enci Records who has worked with bands like Beach Goons, The Joy Fomidable and Fences. What was it like working with them?

Melissa: We’ve loved it so far! It’s been a little over a month since we signed to Enci and they have been a major help and so fun to work with! It’s also rad to be label-mates with bands in the scene that we admire!

Q) Have you received any specific feedback about the song that has stayed with you?

Melissa: Someone said that the song gave them “Nana vibes,” which is my favorite anime! That made me really happy, as the soundtrack for the show is very dear to my heart and features heart wrenching guitars, lyrics and a soul-crushing story to match filled with rock and roll and the struggles of dealing with romance in your twenties.

Q) The single was also posted with a video. How involved were you in developing the concept for it?

Melissa: The YouTube visualizer is just behind-the-scenes video clips we got during our cover art photo shoot, but we actually just filmed the official music video for it yesterday! The visuals are loosely inspired by the Sophia Coppola film The Virgin Suicides, shot in the 1990s but taking place in the mid 1970s.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that an important way for you to connect with your fans?

Melissa: I love to let the world know what we’re up to, so they don’t forget about us! I feel like I’m always posting something, whether its silly random posts, music stuff or anything really! It’s not only fun for me, but I feel like it definitely helps expand our audience while making friends online as well!

Q) One of your other singles “Take Me Away” has gained over 1 million plays, averaging over 10k listeners per day and over 125k monthly listeners on Spotify. What does it mean to you to have gotten such recognition?

Melissa: We did not expect our cover to do as well as it as, but we are so grateful for everyone who’s been listening to us!

Jackie: It means a lot. The fact that people want more from us and want to listen to us is amazing. The reason we play music in the first place is because we love it and to have others to share our love and passion with makes our love grow even bigger and I can’t thank people enough!

Q) You have a busy summer ahead performing at this year´s Lollapalooza and supporting Jimmy Eat World at Chicago´s Metro. What are you most looking forward to about the performances?

Melissa: The shows were honestly life-changing. We got back from those Chicago shows a couple of weeks ago and I keep replaying being on stage in my head over and over. The crowd’s energy on top of not playing live for over a year really made the stage feel electric. Now I’m sitting in bed typing this and cannot wait til we get to do our next festival dates in September!

Jackie: Being able to rock out on front of a live audience. Feeling their energy fuels us to work harder at what we love.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

Melissa: Dylan Brady, Joan Jett, or singing on a Disclosure track would be so sick!

Jackie: I would love to collaborate with Dave Grohl. He’s my biggest inspiration and all I want to do is rock as hard as he does!

Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of you and your music?

Melissa: Thank you for taking the time to read all of this! Seriously love you all so much and cannot wait to share all of our new creations with you!

Jackie: I would say we love and appreciate all of you so, so much! Come rock out with us and when you see us live you better be dancing because we might not be here for a long time, but you better believe we’re here for a good
time.
