The Creator

And just like thousands of meetings that could have been easily turned into an email, The Creator, a 133-minute long movie could have efficiently been presented within a 90 minute run. Don’t get me wrong, the movie is well-intentioned and all in all very interesting, but it failed to keep me glued to my seat for the entire run.

It is the year 2055, where after a nuclear warhead caused by the Artificial Intelligence in Los Angeles, CA that took the life of a million people, the government has decided to start a hunt against any robotic form of existence and are determined to annihilate them as a way to prevent from an event like this to happen again. Ten years later US Army Sergeant Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) is working undercover on a mission to find and destroy “Nirmata,” who they believe to be the mastermind behind all of robotic existence. However, there is a tragic episode that changes the course of his life forever. Now it is the year 2070 and the war between humans and robotics continues and if he wasn’t still breathing, we could say that Sergeant Taylor (who is now retired) is long gone. However, on one evening General Andrews (Ralph Ineson) and Colonel Howell (Allison Janney) make him a sweet offer in exchange for collaborating with them on a new project to capture “The Creator.” This mission is said to put an end to the war and every form of AI ever created.

Director Gareth Edwards offers a compelling visual of a futuristic world as well as enthralling action sequences that makes you feel inside the film. Unfortunately, the slow cook and at times predictable storytelling allows for audiences to take their eyes off the screen more than once. However, I need to praise the appealing performance of Madeleine Yuna Voyles who plays the lovely Alphie. She was able to make the audience experience every feeling that her character is going through, mostly without the use of words. She truly steals the movie away with her heroic interpretation.

I would recommend watching this film since it is generally entertaining, but keep in mind that you need to be patient with the pace of the plot. The Creator is definitely a sci-fi movie that brings a lot of questions to the table in an era where Artificial Intelligence can be found nearly everywhere and leaves us thinking…Is this a fair warning of an apocalyptic future or just another sci fi movie?

The Creator is now available on Digital and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD December 12.
