WHAT? Do Us Part

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Do Us Part is an absurdist dramedy in every sense of the word and in the absolute best way. The new web series follows Gloria (Alison Korman), a disillusioned widow, as she works through marital issues with her unfaithful and recently deceased husband. The dark comedy pulls you in from the pilot episode with a scheme so insane that you can’t help but want to see them follow through. They weren’t exaggerating when they labeled it absurd and you don’t have to wait very long for the crazy action to start.

After putting decades into the relationship, Gloria refuses to let her husband, Edward (Brian Funnagan), peacefully pass without at least getting his retirement benefits. They stumble upon his body mere minutes into the first episode and waste no time formulating a ridiculous ploy. The plan is simple – with the help of her friend Tricia (Dee Freeman), who naturally takes some convincing (complete with a promise she’ll get her own cut), all Gloria has to do is keep Edward looking alive and well until she gets her big payout. The only problem is she’ll have to keep up the charade for an entire year.

It’s like Weekend at Bernie’s meets “Grace and Frankie,” full of sitcom antics and incredibly close calls as they try to really commit to their act. It’s not nearly as easy as either of them thought, despite being able to fool a couple’s counselor early on with a little movie magic. As they dive deeper into their scheme, Gloria starts to uncover secrets about her late husband and the more she learns the more she struggles with coming to terms with the reality of her new life.

The penultimate episode of the series is the strongest where a powerful scene between Tricia and Gloria completely raises the stakes. Once the true gravity of the situation is realized and discussed, the show takes on new life. The final two episodes of the first season are filled with heart, pain and everything in between – ending the season on an unbelievable high note.

At its core the show is absurd, but there’s something deeper there too weaving in truth with all the laughs. Do Us Part is a glimpse of life after love, when that love was lacking something in the first place. I can’t recommend this series enough. It’s definitely worth the watch. All eight episodes will leave you entertained and you’ll find yourself rooting for Gloria despite her oblivious and occasionally self-destructive nature.

WHERE CAN I WATCH? Episodes are available on the series’ website.
